Narratives were difficult to discern in terms of which came first: being physically healthy to age well, or physically fit for the love of performing music. These narratives reveal participants’ music identities, values, and beliefs of being committed to physical fitness for community music participation. Narratives strongly suggested there was a synergistic effect of health and music. That is, participants needed to be healthy to participate in music, and the corollary was that music provided the reason to be healthy. Participants that made adaptations to aging processes to continue music performances took daytime naps and changed mealtime schedules for late-night concerts, sat down during long concerts, and changed nutrition and exercise routines. Likewise, narratives suggested that despite sensory adaptations to hearing, vision, and muscular-skeletal symptoms, aging processes did not disrupt quality of life by participating in community music. Therefore, participants’ narratives evidenced their acceptance of the aging process, and when adaptations arose, they chose appropriate actions to ameliorate their conditions. Yet, a few narratives show personal benefits of physical wellness enhanced participants’ music competencies, sustained youthfulness, and maintenance of cognitive simulation. Whether it is blues and reggae or rap and pop rock, there is music out there for everyone. Music can serve as a stabilizer for some, a relaxant to others, and to many a form of inspiration.
Rock n’ Roll is a type of music that came about in the late 50’s. Before that, there was no music that resembled Rock n’ Roll; instead, folk and other genres dominated. Then the Korean War ended. Shortly thereafter, the Vietnam War began, and with it came a new type of music, featuring hateful songs and concerts. The introduction and evolution of rock and roll music from the late 50’s and 60’s made a generation more violent both physically and verbally.

Music and sounds have the power to effect one’s thoughts and emotions. Certain tones, pitches, lyrics, and melodies can invoke happiness, sadness, relief, and confidence. To achieve these emotions with music, many people find it helpful to enroll into music therapy. According to the American Music Therapy Association, music therapy is the clinical and evidence-based use of music interventions to accomplish individualized goals. These goals may be to manage stress, promote wellness, alleviate pain, enhance memory, or express feelings. Music therapy is widely used in hospital and other inpatient settings, furthermore in outpatient settings and personal use. It is studied in patients and family with cardiac issues, cancer, psychiatric cases, and as general palliative care, as well as other fields. It has been found that women preparing for labor received the greatest benefit of music therapy, followed by medical procedures and occupational stress. (Elliot, 2011)
