An Eternal Wisdom
“Communication- the human connection- is the key to personal and career success” (Paul J. Meyer). Communication is an essential skill that helps us to exchange information and connect to the rest of the world. Written communication is one form of communication that involves the use of written words. In the world that technology is improving, the use of computers and internet connection make the means of transmitting information through writing, which needs proficient writing skills. I grow up speaking, reading, and writing Amharic, my native language, in Ethiopia. Even if English classes are given in Ethiopia since it is an international language, it focuses on the grammar part but not on the writing part of the language.

Coming to the country where English is spoken encourage me to acquire knowledge on the basic writing skills, which can help me in my day to day life. ENGL 101 is the first level English course that is given at Montgomery College to give an introduction to college writing. Being a second language learner with no background experience of writing skills needs a day to day practice in order to improve the required skills of writing. The various opportunities, including the writing center that Montgomery College provides help ESL students like me to enhance their knowledge of the basic techniques that are needed for a qualified paper. In this writing class, with the help of my instructor, Professor Michael LeBlanc, I have shown a progress in my writing skills even though I still need to work on some of the skills. Two of my writing strengths are integrating information into essays by paraphrasing based on assigned readings and developing paragraphs with vivid details; however, I still need improvement in demonstrating facility with grammatical issues, such as word …show more content…
Developing a concrete and clear detail in writing an essay is a good means for the readers to experience and become connected to a place or a scene that is described in the paper. In the essay, “A Profile on Evangelicalism”, I have clearly described how the International Ethiopian Evangelical Church looks like. As an illustration, a sentence in paragraph two of this essay, “The church was like a conference room full of single chairs arranged in four rows, with a well-formed stage covered by a red carpet and containing instruments like a guitar, a drum, a piano, and a saxophone, which made me feel like I would be attending a concert.” This way of describing places by giving clear details enable the readers to visualize the church. In addition, the paragraph provides clear images of the church, including how it is organized, how it is decorated, and how the followers and gospel singers dressed up. In the essay, “A Puzzle of Life”, that explains about a spiritual life and doubt, paragraph two illustrates one of my personal experiences that helped me in shaping my belief. I have given a nice detail that provides readers sensory details about the scene that happened in a room with my cousin. A reader can feel the terrific moment that I was going through only from the details that I
As I look back into my high school years, I thought I wrote papers well. But then coming into a college environment, my papers were mediocre. By overlooking at my past papers, I found that they were unorganized, sloppy and had bad use of diction. From now on, I will use the tools I learned in English 1100-40 as a foundation for the future papers I intend on writing in college. Following the criteria of organizing ideas so that they flow, impacting the reader with diction and also by being creative, will help become an ideal writer. Following the criteria of staying motivated in short and long term goals, taking responsibility for actions and finally the ability to study well will help me develop into a supreme student.
English 101 is one of the most common college courses in the world. When I enrolled in the class, I was bothered that I would have spend forty hours in a freshman writing class; along with at least another forty hours throughout the semester writing for the class. What surprised me, was that when I began writing my essays I was not annoyed or bothered; I actually enjoyed the assignments. Most importantly, throughout the course of the semester, I have become a better writer and have ultimately met the course goals of English 101.
The art of writing is a complex and difficult process. Proper writing requires careful planning, revision, and proofreading. Throughout the past semester, the quality of my writing has evolved significantly. At first, I struggled with the separation of different types of paragraphs, and I found writing them laborious. Constant practice, however, has eliminated many of my original difficulties, and helped to inspire confidence in my skills. As a collegiate writer, my strength lies in my clear understanding of the fundamentals of writing, while my primary weakness is proofreading my own work.
As a second language learner I have never expected myself to be a perfect writer throughout the semester. Even If English was my first language still, I would not be a perfect writer. It is not about first or second language, it is about how well I understand the learning objectives. Then organizing and writing with my own ideas and putting them in my paper. I am going to be honest, I am not good at English subject and English subject is my strongest weakness than the other subjects. In this paper I will discuss and analyze my own writing, reflecting on the ways that my writing has improved throughout the semester.
One would have not known much about how to write an effective essay until they have clearly edited their previously written essay during the Expository Writing Stations. Anyone who has looked over their writing multiple times and has found ways to enhance and professionalize it will learn to write in a more clear and concise manner than they had done before. The Expository Writing Stations has helped change the students’ understanding of how to write a proper essay by having the the students edit and review one another’s essays, finding some things that they should have put on their own essay to help enhance the writing. Students also find out about what components of their writing sounds and looks clear, and how their writing could have developed. Their understanding of using correct, accurate word choice and evidence has evolved. The following examples of reflections show how one has thoroughly understood the insufficient parts of their essay and
Writing is an important part of everyone’s life, whether we use it in school, in the workplace, as a hobby or in personal communication. It is important to have this skill because it helps us as writers to express feelings and thoughts to other people in a reasonably permanent form. Formal writing forms like essays, research papers, and articles stimulates critically thinking. This helps the writer to learn how to interpret the world around him/her in a meaningful way. In college, professors motivate students to write in a formal, coherent manner, without losing their own voice in the process. Improving your writing skills is important, in every English class that’s the main teaching point; to help students improve their writing skills. Throughout my college experience I have acknowledge that
As my English 101 class comes to an end, I have realized how much I have transformed as a writer. In this essay, I am going to explain what I realized my strengths and weaknesses are as a writer and how they have manifested themselves throughout the quarter. I was skeptical at first coming into this class knowing that English takes formidable work and dedication, but I am very proud of the progress I have made. We completed a great deal of work throughout the quarter; from grammar exercises, summary reviews, and two challenging essays. Throughout the quarter I found myself improving in each category. As a writer, my skills and confidence have developed into more clarity and thought, something I have always wanted to be, as a result of a well constructed class that led to a superb educational experience.
This class has been significantly more difficult than any other English class I have taken all throughout high school. This semester, I have been introduced to different styles of writing that I have never been exposed to before. This class has been stressful, but also fun. With using all of the resources I have been given throughout the semester, I have been able to do my best to further my writing abilities and hopefully only continue to grow them as I finish my later years in college. Throughout this essay, I will discuss my failures, my successes, my overall performance in the class, and my skill development skills.
Reflecting back to this semester did I realize that Professor Ray had taught many skills to my learning on material that I have not had a chance to cover or got to in high school. She had shown many different type of technique of writing for students and taught the class writing can be enjoyable. Throughout my semester in ENG-111, my writing skills for all my papers have weaknesses like Grammar/Spelling/Punctuation for fragments, comma splices, and comma use. I also, have trouble with starting topic sentences and sentence structure of the body paragraph. However, I have made strong improvement in certain areas like development for supporting paragraph details and the thesis statement.
Another purpose in written communication may be to communicate something that happened, or narrating an experience to a reader. This is referred to as writing to reconstruct experience. To make the experience more vivid and interesting to a reader, you should give specific details, use concrete language (words that create a specific image in the mind of your reader for example: slowly tip-toe) and use of analogies (comparison words, for example hard as a rock). Examples of this purpose of writing include: - a witness writes a police statement to describe an occurrence. Or writers who write novels or books describing a true story they experienced.
At the start of this class, I made a goal to develop my writing skills to better prepare me for other courses for my degree. I knew English 106 would be different compared to any other English or college courses that I have taken. I knew English 106 environment will let me grow in diverse writing dimensions. My long serving years of experience in the military has exposed me to many cultures around the globe. In just seven weeks of the course, I have seen some improvement in my writing. This course has afforded me with several techniques that have made writing not only a little bit easier but also more in-depth resulting in a higher level of academic writing versus my normal military style writing. Now I understand the writing process and
Communication is a vital elemental that has played an important role in the survival and evolution of species, most importantly homo sapiens. Communication is the way by which one conveys a message. Early human primates most likely began to communicate by the use of body language and grunts; eventually leading to the formations of language. Scientists do not know when language arose but many hypotheses and theories have speculated on its origin. In the following experiments, we will explore the problems and advantages that arise when essential factors of communication and language are excluded.
Communication is the transmission or exchange of information. To effectively communicate a person must transmit a message using verbal & nonverbal methods to a recipient who interprets the meaning and returns with a response. It is a two-way process. Being able to talk and listen this does not guarantee the desired goals will be met, if the participants are unable to their ideas, problems, or needs during the communication process. Attempts to communicate is not always effective and when it fails we must look at the principle component as to why the exchange was misunderstood. These failures can be related to internal, external, and semantic barriers, also known as noise.
the formation and development of positive and negative feelings, support, collaboration and action, belonging, frustration and conflict. Human communication is complex, diverse and constant companion of human activity. Communication is the relationship between human individuals; therefore it is always an interaction. There is no interaction without communication. I believe that there is a strong connection between writing skills and oral communication skills. A large amount of information we acquire through reading/writing; we have to read/write in order to get information, and when we are educated and informed, then we better communicate orally.
Communication is one of the most important factors in our lives. It dictates the relationships formed with the individuals in personal and professional lives. Effective communication provides a foundation for trust and respect to grow. It also helps better understand a person and the context of the conversation. Individuals often believe that their communication skills are much better than what they actually are. Communication appears effortless; however, much of what two people discuss gets misunderstood, thus leading to conflicts and distress. To communicate effectively, one must understand the emotion behind the information being said. Knowing how to communicate effectively can improve relationships one has at home, work and in social affairs. Understanding communication skills such as; listening, non-verbal communication and managing stress can help better the relationships one has with others.
