Class participation might sound like a very basic pair of words simply referring to the act of walking into class, but it is much more in-depth than that. Class participation holds a complexity of habits, responsibility, and choices when it comes to being in any type of classroom environment. The expected requirements when being apart of this type of environment is to have active listening, be engaged, and participate sharply in all activities. Although this is what is expected of any student in the classroom, this is not what is always observed as there are a variety of students that participate differently and engage themselves in unique ways. The lack of participation in class can range from not paying attention, to not taking notes, or even being unmotivated enough to be engaged and have a hands on experience in group activities. One of the biggest problems for students these days is having the motivation to actually participate, several students don’t actively participate until they realize their lack of enthusiasm is causing their grades to fail and having a negative impact. The topic of consequences of a lack of class participation is very evident and requires little information. Come to class, pay attention and put in effort and you’ll do great. Meanwhile, don’t come to class, or lack learning skills, and put in little to no effort and the consequences will be easily visible in the student’s academic performance. The benefits of class participation are gained from hard work, effort, and a motive to learn further and become a better student. Meanwhile, the consequences of class participation are a lack of effort and ability to perceive the information being taught. The role of self motivation and how engagement plays a large role in class participation also plays a much stronger role in a classroom and the development of a student’s capability to learn and adapt. Properly learning and engaging yourself through classroom participation can allow a student to also gain a variety of proactive habits, mindsets, and achieve a level of active listening which would help in the development of any student ability to succeed. Many students believe they are in school to learn education from core subjects like math, english, social science, and science and not a gym class. A study was performed to observe students ' motivational factor behind participating in a physical education class. The negative responses in this study included students saying " 'I take part in this PE class...Because I 'll get in trouble if I don 't...But I don 't see what I get out of PE '"(Taylor et al ). Many students believe they will be better off not having taken that class at all because they are either already involved in sports or simply would want to focus mainly on their core classes rather than physical education.
