Civil engineering keeps our surroundings safe, modern, and efficient. Unexpectedly, civil engineering is the oldest of the foremost disciplines of engineering. Engineering was a significant element of civilizations, leading to the development of the first engineering school. In 1747, the National School of Bridges and Highways in France launched and allowed expansion of engineering to occur. John Smeaton was the first person to actually call himself a "Civil Engineer". In the 21st century, civil engineering has taken a unique turn. Through modernization, new structures are being formed and efficiency is greatly increased. Now, “structural engineering is seen as a form of art rather than science” (Saouma). Civil engineering is the fundamental foundation that holds society up. Innovation and newfound creativity are creating the greatest structures of the century.
Civil engineering is the application of physical and scientific principles for solving the problems of society, and its history is intricately linked to advances in the understanding of physics and mathematics throughout history. Precise measurements are key in creating the magnificent structures seen today. Knowing all the minute details throughout every inch of a project is the first thing in an engineer’s mind. Questions such as “Is this 100% safe?” become priorities. The stability and safety of every idea that emerges from an engineer’s imagination need to be tested repeatedly and with accuracy. Having a background in mathematics and physics allow the analysis of every possible aspect when it comes to construction of houses, hotels, and every building that stands today. Engineers travel frequently and “meeting new people is a given in civil engineering” (Chu). Collaborating people and fellow engineers allow expansion in the thought process of creating the next modern configuration. Technology is improving rapidly in the 21st century. Civil engineering has to accommodate. Key concepts such as efficiency interrelate with contemporary technology. With growing populations, having a large amount of space within a small complex is possible through technology. Folding walls, foot storage, and the alteration of wood flooring into a kitchen table all incorporate the modern movement of civil engineering. In the profession of civil engineering, “keeping up with the Jones” is inevitable.
It is somewhat by accident that I find myself drawn towards the field of Construction Science. I have always enjoyed building with an incorporation of moving parts. When I was young, I started building toy cars, airplanes, dinosaurs, and everything an eight-year-old boy would imagine. It was like striking gold! I could build tracks, and cars with wheels to go on the tracks. I could even build towers with moving parts that reached the living room ceiling. Needless to say this unassuming box of used gadgets fostered a growing excitement towards construction and architecture. As my knowledge of the field grew, so did my curiosity about the assembly and preparation it takes to build useful assets like houses, hotels, even parking garages. I am pursuing a degree in Construction Science, which encompasses not only creating new spheres of urban development, but also a supporting a structure that helps a community grow. After attending Blinn College, I feel the need to expand my knowledge in the field of architecture by attending the highly credited University of Texas A&M.
When designing large structures such as bridges, ships, dams and various modes of transportation, engineers must determine what methods and materials should be used in order to design, construct, and maintain the structure for a long period of time. A strict code of ethics must be followed in order to reduce any possible damages and tragedies. Though this process is used to try and minimize any design errors and possible failures, unknown factors such as population increase, natural disasters, and insufficient manpower can cause the structure to fail. The contemporary world is full of marvels. Technological advances have enabled mankind to fly in the heavens, instantaneously communicate with distant relatives thousands of miles away, construct buildings that are able to withstand many natural disasters, cure deadly diseases, and even travel to and study areas beyond the confines of planet Earth. While there are many factors that contributed to man’s ability to overcome what many once thought were impossible feats, it is the study of engineering that has enabled one to study the elements and leverage all that they have to offer. Mathematics lies at the heart of all science, including engineering. Without progressions in mathematical concepts, engineering principles and applications would not have advanced as quickly as they have throughout history.
The construction phase would not be possible without the knowledge of basic geometry. Points, lines, measurements and angles are often used to lay out the building in accordance to the architect drawings.

In the case of the "Three Little Pigs" nursery rhyme, building material played a key role in preventing the house from collapsing. The Sampoong Superstore, on the other hand, failed due to many factors, but one of the major factors was ethical failure in the construction and maintenance of the structure. Some other things that have become evident are that geometric simplicity and symmetry are key to constructing an earthquake resistant building. Simplicity often leads to symmetry, and in turn symmetry tends to decrease the likelihood of a concentration of mass. This idea of lighter buildings being safer can be explained mathematically using the formula F=MA. To understand how this formula works it is pertinent to recognize that earthquakes alone do not cause damage because all they provide is an acceleration.

There is also a need to implement new professional and educational approaches to new challenges and new implications that are needed for the twenty-first century society. This paper will introduce and explain five different issues that civil engineers are currently facing and elaborate about how these challenges interrelate to each other.

Like all engineers, architectural engineers apply the theories and principles of science and mathematics to research and develop economical solutions to technical problems. Their work is the link between scientific discoveries and commercial applications. Engineers design products, machinery to build those products, factories in which those products are made, and the systems that ensure the quality of the product and efficiency of the workforce and manufacturing process. Engineers design, plan, and supervise the construction of buildings, highways, and transit systems. They develop new materials that both improve the performance of products and help implement advances in technology. Engineering knowledge is applied to improving many things, including the quality of health care, the safety of food products, and the efficient operation of financial systems.
Throughout my lifetime, I have never had to think very much about the working world and everything that went with it. All through high school I took classes I liked or thought would be interesting to me, but never thought that all of those classes were preparing me for what was to come. Before I knew it, it was time to go to college. The four years of high school had flown by and now it was time to choose a major for college. I had never given much thought as to what I wanted to do for the rest of my life. The only real occupations that I had really gotten to experience were teaching, the jobs that my parents had, and others such as doctors, dentist, most of the occupations that everyone sees while they are growing up. When I finally decided on my major, I chose engineering, but I didn’t know if I would like it or not. The only prior knowledge I had about it was the fact that my grandfather was an electrical and chemical engineer, and that my parents and teachers said that I would be good at engineering. Recently I have been interested in civil engineering, but what does one do with such a degree? What opportunities are available to a person with a degree in civil engineering on the job market? The broad curriculum that covers many different fields of engineering make civil engineering a major that allows a person to work in nearly any field they wish.
