Cell phones are like a fire, when left unsupervised, they can become disastrous, but when managed properly, they can be a beautiful thing. Over the years, cell phones have developed into multi-purpose and immensely essential devices. Presently, many look towards electronics and see a monster of a creation beginning to tear apart society. What people do not realize is how beneficial cell phones and other devices can be when used rightfully. In recent years, there has been much debate on whether schools should or should not allow devices in the classroom. Electronic devices should be allowed in public schools across America as they provide several educational benefits, are a quick and easy way to communicate with others, and have many safety …show more content…
There are times during school when as situation arises that could sacrifice the safety of students and “in an emergency, such as an attack, bomb threat, or school shooting, students with cell phones can instantly contact their parents or the proper authorities” (Hastings 5). During life-threatening events within schools, parents worry if their child is safe. They can panic and begin to believe the worst if they do not receive a text from their child letting them know they are okay. Taking phones away stops students from reassuring their parents they are safe when in life threatening situations. In addition, electronic devices allow students to quickly call authorities in alarming situations. Most parents see schools as a safe place to send their kids during the day. As schools are very safe, there are times when threatening situations are brought upon them. In the event a student becomes aware of one of these situations before an adult, they can immediately contact the police if they have possession of their phone at the given time. When parents of these children are first informed of the current circumstances, most would like to know where their child is to ensure their safety. Fortunately, cell phones allow parents to track their child’s location. When unaware of their child’s current whereabouts, parents will fear something terrible has happened to their child. A student explains that “cell phones have games and apps that might distract kids from schoolwork” (Baker 7). Over time, cell phones have grown into incredibly resourceful devices. Simply because cell phones can be distracting to some, does not mean they do not serve as a great resource for many others. Music for example can help one concentrate when working on a school project. Furthermore, some argue that cell phones can be used to cheat on tests. As this may be true, many rules have been made that prohibit phones from being out during tests. Although some students will still take their phones out during tests to look up answers, the risk is much higher ultimately minimizes the number of phones out during tests. People also object the use of phones in school when they express that cell phones can be used to bully others. Almost all can agree that bullying has become a serious issue that no one should take lightly. As serious as it may be, there can be very strict rules made to limit this from happening. If photos or gossip are being spread throughout the school day via electronic device, it quickly gets squashed and is soon followed by harsh punishments. These punishments will quickly stop these mean kids from cyberbullying. As cell phones and other
” Carr uses this example to provide evidence of how smartphones pose as a distraction and interrupt students from their work. Carr also uses “nearly a hundred secondary schools.” This example is used so readers can grasp the large amount of schools that are involved in the issue. Lastly Carr uses “The subjects whose phones were in view posted the worst scores, while those who left their phones in a different room did the best.”

Have you ever heard of the gruesome Columbine High School massacre? This incident occurred on April 20th 1999 and involved two students embarking on a shooting rampage, killing twelve students, a teacher and wounding twenty three others. Unfortunately during this incident, the school's most easily accessible phone was on the other side of the school in the library. Perhaps some of these lives could have been saved if the students in this class had cell phones that they could've used to contact the authorities more quickly. The issue we are addressing today is the use of cellular devices in educational facilities. I believe that cell phone use is of extreme convenience, and has academically beneficial aspects, among it's so called "faults".
Teachers are finding it harder and harder to separate a student from their cell phones for eight hours. Cellular devices and social media have become a number one priority for many people across the world. Due to the fact that the student will not put down their phones during school hours, their grades tend to be lower, which could, in the long run, affect their chances of getting into college. The use of cell phones does not strictly affect younger generations, it also had major influence on adults at the
We have been allowing cell phones to impact our lives in negative ways. Our everyday life changes every day because of these cell phones and how we use them. I have noticed in everyone’s life, including mine, that it is hindering us socially and physically. My biggest concern is the negative impact it is having on our education and students allowing them to get in the way of their education. We need to get a hold on these cell phones before it gets any more out of hand, but I think it is too
Cell phones should be permitted in schools, because they can be very beneficial and practical in schools. Cell phones can be a life-saver in the case of an emergency. In New York, a violent incident has taken place. Fortunately, timely communication from a student using a cell phone saved a man who desperately needed medical attention (“Cell Phones in the Classroom”). Another student has assisted the police in arresting the suspect by giving timely updates of the criminal scene using a cell phone during the school lockdown.
In conclusion, this essay has tried to argue that cell phones are valuable tools in schools. Many of us see cell phone pessimistically but really haven’t looked at them optimistically. We all know that "with every good, comes a bad, and with responsibilities, come consequences". By all means allowing cell phones in schools is a great idea, and students should start to learn the positive features of that new device. Overall, this essay has attempted to show that allowing cell phones in schools is not a bad idea.
It’s not acceptable to use cell phones in class. Actually, using cell phones has more negative effects than positive. So, why do we need to change the policy that prohibits students from using cell phones in classrooms? In my opinion, I will say no, we shouldn’t change the policy that exists now - no cell phone use, under any circumstances.
Ever since incidents such as 9/11 and Columbine, high schools have started implementing new rules regarding cellphones. Cellphones attract the attention of building managers, teachers, parents, and students. Although teachers see them as a distraction and a way to cheat, they can be quite helpful to students. School districts should permit students to use cellular devices in school for purposes of improving their education and providing themselves with a sense of security. By permitting the use of cellphones in school, students can increase their knowledge and complete school work by using applications and other features on their smartphones.
Can you see yourself without a cell phone today? This world has become so technologically dependent that it is hard for anyone to not use a cell phone, a computer, or some sort of device at least once during the day. Since technology has come so far, better education should be possible. Cell phones are a way of communication and can make people feel safe, so it is hard to believe that most schools ban them. It is time for schools to see that technology is the future and it is growing rapidly, along with educational and safety features.
Electronics are a huge part of our society. “Out of the world’s estimated 7 billion people, 6 billion have access to mobile phones” (Wang). Over thousands of these cell phones are owned by students K-12. A major debate topic is should cell phones be allowed in schools? “Twenty-four percent of schools have banned mobile devices altogether and sixty-two percent allow them on school grounds, but not in the classroom” (Raths).
Today’s cell phone is the front line technology at our fingertips. Keeping this in mind the use of cell phones have become an affair when it comes to allowing teens to use them in educational environments, such as schools. One part of society supports the use of cell phones while the other part of society disapproves the use of cell phones. I personally believe that cell phones should not only be allowed in school, but cell phones should be mandatory just like a textbook. Cell phones do not only allow students to stay united with friends and family, but cell phones are also a magnificent learning system, and they boost the liable use of technology.
The first reason to support that mobile phones should be banned in schools is that devices can be used to cheating for instance, text friends about answers during a test, take picture of test questions with mobile phones to send to friends, search the internet to answers during a test, and store information on mobile phones to look at during a test. It is suggested by Benenson Strategy Group (2008) indicated that 65 per c...
Mobile phones are undeniable today. Almost everybody has a mobile phone. Formerly, it only functioned as a portable mean of communication. The function of a mobile phone has developed into entertainment. Furthermore, mobile phone has also come into the schools. However, it has both positive and negative effect on students. This essay argues that mobile phones will bring more negative than positive effect for students. Of course, students use it as a mean of communication and sometimes for an emergency call if they need it. Yet, they would use their mobile phones for both bullying and cheating. Also, mobile phones will make students lost concentration during their study.
Many schools are now making new rules or guidelines to improve the educational impact that school has on students. One of these new rules or guidelines is a ban on cell phones during school hours. This new guideline upsets many students that use cell phones because they feel that it takes away their freedom. It is a privilege, not a right, that those students even have cell phones, and they are abusing their privilege tremendously. This new guideline is a superior guideline to follow, and in the long run, students will realize how this ban affected their learning experience. Cell phones should be ultimately banned for a number of reasons. Cell phones are a distraction to other students, it is a major distraction to the student with the cell phone, and there are phones in the school that students can use whenever they need.
