Although polemicists and political scientists continue to debate the issue of voting as a civic duty, all agree that voting is a right to which every citizen is entitled to exercise. And while voters understand the lasting effects of making their voices heard during elections and the direct consequences of their choices on local and national issues, many fail to vote from informed decisions and end up with regrettable candidate choices. The candidate selection process is an integral and critical part of voter education to which every voting citizen must dedicate time and attention because, more than simply taking to the polls and choosing names on a ballot, completing the following steps toward selecting and voting for the right candidates not only sustains confidence in the democratic process but also safeguards accurate voter stance on issues that ultimately shape the country’s future.
The first step in the candidate selection process is deciding what to look for in a candidate; the experiences and qualities they would bring into the office once elected. If addressed with an issue, how will they act upon it when given the circumstances? How will they handle problems/issues as it arises? A voter should focus first on finding out what qualities and qualifications they want or what they look for in a leader. A candidate must a have good representation of themselves and they should be able to communicate well with the public. Do voters want a leader who just sits back and watch others do the work? Or would they rather have a candidate who shows the initiative to develop and carry out on ideas? These questions are important in deciding whether you are electing the right candidate or not.

Becoming fully informed about a candidate takes a lot of time, patience, dedication, and of course, hard work. The steps mentioned above are just a few pointers on how to effectively choose a rightful candidate. Being a strong candidate does not necessarily mean that he is the wealthiest, liked, admired, or enjoyed by many people. Know whom you are voting. Leadership is a set of characteristics that are used to help mentor and motivate others toward a common purpose. Now that voters have decided what to look for, obtained information, learned about leading abilities, asked how others viewed their candidate, and completed voter’s checklist, it is now time to choose.
