If I were the Prime Minister of Canada the environmental issue that I would focus on for the next five years is the biodiversity loss in Canada. Canada is the world’s second largest country in size, with 9.98 square kilometers and a population of 35 million people. A country that is so huge must also be rich in species? An estimated 14,000 species live in Canada, and only half have been identified. Canada is such a large country and so sparsely settled for the most part that it is very difficult to know and name every single species living in the country. This just gives you a glimpse of how naturally diverse the country really is.
Biodiversity is a priority issue for me and the country of Canada because nature and biodiversity provide for services that we humans take for granted. Clean air, clean water, soil for agriculture, and pollination from different insects are only a few things provided by nature. In the 21st century living in the industrialized era we have tendency to neglect things that we believe to have no economic value to us. “… the economic value of income from the earths ecological services is at least $36 trillion (US) per year” (Miller, Hackett 213).Clearly diversity has very economic value, but we also need it for basic things such as food. Agriculture in Canada is worth $ 95 billion and account for 8.8% of its gross national product and 14% of its employment (Miller, Hackett 292).Canadians also need biodiversity for their health, with 70% of pharmaceuticals being derived from natural resources. We should care to save biodiversity not only for the benefits that it brings to us, but also because of its aesthetic value, which means that some people love and appreciate nature because of its beauty. Oil spills, pollution and soil degradation has caused many of the species in that region to lose their habitats. Hopefully with this plan I will be able to not only reduce threatened species but also preserve biodiversity in each province, and that would benefit Canada as a whole.
As you can see biodiversity loss is a very pressing issue and should be prioritized by the prime minister. If we continue to exploit the land and make the species lose their homes, biodiversity will decrease significantly. A vast country like Canada needs its biodiversity because it can add to the richness of the country and can help Canadian citizens. We tend to neglect it but it is very important not only to us but to future generations.
