The Importance of Being Earnest is a comedic play written by Oscar Wilde that has been made into many adaptations on film and television. The 2002 film version of The Importance of Being Earnest starring Reese Witherspoon and Colin Firth was mostly adapted from the play. However, there are some difference that are very evident to those who have read the play in its entirety. Specifically, the scene when Lady Bracknell interviews Jack and the scene between Cecily and Gwendolyn discovered Algernon and Jack/ Earnest real identity in Act II. The differences between the play and the film are slight, such as changes in when characters interact with each other and added or cut dialogue from the play that changes the film at the director’s discretion. Gwendolyn and Cecily scene starts off exactly adapted from the play with the two woman having tea and cake in the garden getting to know one another better. Cecily finds herself telling Gwendolyn that she is a ward of Jack Worthing, Gwendolyn however is a little taken aback and wishes that she was older and less pretty. Gwendolyn states on Cecily age and appearance, “ But I am bound to state that now that I know that you are Mr. Worthing’s ward, I cannot help expressing a wish you were—well just a little older than you seem to be—and not quite so very alluring in appearance.” (Earnest.
