Does being cruel to animals as a child mean the child will grow up to be a serial killer? Troubled children will often show signs of cruelty to animals. It is a red flag that the child is in need of psychological help. If a child abuses animals, then there is a good chance they will grow up to be a violent adult and possible a serial killer. "Jeffrey Dahmer, Albert DeSalvo (the “Boston strangler”), David Berkowitz (the “Son of Sam”) and Carroll Edward Cole, a serial killer accused of 35 deaths, all recounted animal torture as their first violent act." Psychology Today 2013. "According to the Humane Society of the United States, researchers determined that between 71 percent and 83 percent of women entering domestic violence shelters reported
that their partners also abused or killed the family pet." Journal of Community Health There is strong evidence of a link between animal cruelty in childhood to violence as an adult. It‘s not certain that the child animal abuser will definitely grow up to be a serial killer, but with out some kind of intervention, the likelihood is that the individual would live a violence filled life.
In many cases, serial killers began their lives as remotely normal human beings. Most, however, have detectable characteristics of murderers before they hit puberty. Otis O’toole, for example, started a neighbourhood fire when he was six. George Adorno was even younger when he first displayed his pyromaniac tendencies by setting fire to his own sister when he was four. Along with pyromaniac behavior, other often-cited warning signs are enuresis (bed-wetting) and cruelty toward animals. Often, serial murderers are abused physically, psychologically, and sexually as children, sometimes from a stranger, but in most cases from a trusted family member or friend. Typically, they come from broken families, usually...
Richard dropped out of junior high school and was notorious for killing cats in his Polish neighborhood as a youth. Even Richard’s brother Joseph was convicted of raping and murdering a 12-year-old girl (Carlo 2003). Amid the alcohol abuse of his father as well as physical and verbal abuse from both his mother and father, Richard began to develop those attributes that psychologists typically attribute to serial killers: an abusive childhood, family dysfunction, killing animals, a lack of self-worth (Holmes 1999), and alcoholism (Carlo 2003).... ... middle of paper ...
Common psychological disturbances in the stages of making a serial killer are seen in childhood and are usually based upon mental and psychological abuse endured by a child.
To take off the aggression and need to compensate the horrible memories of the childhood explain the reason why serial killers abuse animals during their childhood. When they were children they control pets and they can harm them knowing that the animals can fight back. Therefore, they feel themselves as if they were in absolute power. This animal torture later will turn in to human victim torture.
Some of the traits most male serial killers have as a child include killing animals, auto-erotic activities, physical head injuries, and even bed wetting. The reason why killing animals is very common among serial killers is because it gives young killers great pleasure in knowing they have control over someone’s or something’s life.... ... middle of paper ... ...
Most serial killers are psychopaths. Psychopathic tendencies are discovered in children at a young age. It is believed that future murders start off by mutilating animals or performing their killing and sexual fantasies on animals. An example of this
“My consuming lust was to experience their bodies. I viewed them as objects, as strangers. It is hard for me to believe a human being could have done what I've done”(Dahmer). Jeffrey Dahmer is notably one of the most infamous serial killers in the United States. Along with seventeen murders under his belt, he was also a pedophile, cannibal and necrophiliac.
“There can be many reason for animal cruelty, like any other form of violence, is often committed by a person who feels powerless, unnoticed, or under control of others. Some who are cruel to animals copy acts what they have seen or that have been done to them, others see harming an animal as a safe way to get revenge against--or threaten-- someone who cares about that animal”. (“Animal… Statistics”) Concerns towards abusing animals have gone up in the past. Although there are not many cases on animal abuse, many have occurred. Abusers are charged with Criminal Animal Abuse and then sentenced to life in prison. Some animals that are physically abused are sometimes rescued by Animal Control, and are taken it to an animal shelter. However, many shelters have not had the space to keep the animals so the workers would have to put them down (Carol Roach). Researchers have shown that the main animals getting abused are dogs, chickens, horses, and livestock (“Animal...
Statistical evidence can be used to stress the seriousness of domestic violence and the importance of having women’s shelters dispersed throughout the nation. According to recent surveys, one in every three women will experience domestic violence at some time during her lifetime. Domestic violence is also the leading cause of injury to women, with the abuser usually being a member of her own family. Finally, up to ten million American children witness some type of domestic violence every year (Fantuzzo and Fusco, “Children’s Direct Exposure to Types of Domestic Violence Crime: A Population-based Investigation”). These statistics show that domestic violence is a reality and that the efforts of women’s shelters are not in vain.
The scary part is that this number does not even account for the numerous cases that are not even reported. Many victims are threatened or even hurt so badly that they must keep their mouth shut in fear of even worse abuse to come. Of course, a large portion of these victims are women, which makes it even more understandable. In order to deal with the after effects of domestic abuse, women need social and emotional support (Svavarsdóttir et al.).
The ugly truth is that animals are dying at the hands of their owners everyday, some in very violent ways that can be avoided given the right solution. Slaughterhouses, puppy mills, dog fighting, and so on, are just a few examples of how animals are being treated badly by people. Animal cruelty is a form of violence which, unfortunately, sometimes goes hand in hand with child abuse.... ... middle of paper ... ... Also, violence towards animals needs to be included in assessments for child protective services, in order to better prevent animals being placed in dangerous hands.
Although at such a young age some children are curious and may just be experimenting, but if killing animals with no remorse keeps occurring I would question the reasoning. “When the pain and death is inflicted upon a living creature which shows emotions of distress and suffering, something is seriously wrong with the child torturing the poor creatures” (Gadson, 2011). This act of animal cruelty pleasures young killers and gives them that sense of being in control. Once they manage to perfect the art completely these children will later perform these same acts on other human
Those were examples of infamous serial killers who had started off killing animals; as children and then into bigger murderers. That was because when they were young, they weren’t stopped right away. Neighbors nearby saw everything but never said anything. They could have been children who were abused or raped as young children and they never knew how to care. They acted out what they thought was the right thing to do; or out of anger. Taking out on an animal is easy at first because they thought that they could get away with it; and they did. At the end, they ended up killing people in
According to the National Crime Victimization Survey, there are more than 960,000 annual cases of domestic violence in the United States, 85% of the domestic violence victims are women, and women are eight times more likely than men to be a victim of assault by an intimate partner conservatively estimate that at least 11% of women in the United States are involved in abusive intimate relationships.
I will discuss each one in more detail. Many people who abuse animals do not realize that they are actually hurting animals, this is known as unintentional. When some people try to discipline their pets, they use tactics that they think are acceptable, when in reality, this is probably not the best way. People also abuse animals due to lack of attention, such as forgetting to feed and water the animals for a number of days. A family may take the animals with them when they leave the house, and forget to leave a window down with the animal inside.
