People are constantly setting goals for themselves in hopes of changing their life or just looking to start something new. Obviously time is a big factor as to when those dreams will come true and how those goals will be achieved, but I know for athletes, it is tough playing their last game and eventually hanging the jersey up. And a common goal that athletes have after kissing that jersey goodbye is to become a coach. After all the years of playing sports and being a part of club teams, can be tiring and too much in the moment, but in the end, after all is said and done, many athletes wish they could go back and play one more game. Be a part of one more victory or championship, or even be able to get their butts kicked during conditioning just one more time. After all, a good way to give back to the sport and to in a way, relive those glory moments, is by coaching. Becoming a coach is nothing easy and comes with a lot of pressure, time and commitment, but can be a fun and easy way to get back into something they once loved as a child and teenager. The best ways to become a successful coach is by connecting with and motivating athletes, making sure winning is not the overall focus, and being confident and open minded. Coaching is an integral part of helping achieve one’s maximum abilities. Dr. Gawande (2013) explains that, “Coaches are not teachers, but they teach. They’re not your boss—in professional tennis, golf, and skating, the athlete hires and fires the coach—but they can be bossy” (p. 3). It is difficult to say what is the exact function of a coach, however, they help bring forth another point of view different from our own and they also help bring about the right mindset in order to subdue a weakness.
Every team needs guidance from a coach, hence the need for a coach who possess strong, heart-filled
The coaching process is a very complex endeavor, created to change the course of things is someone’s life. Besides this, it is a very well-organized process. You cannot skip a stage or be shallow about another, because the outcome of the coaching process will not be the desired one. Besides this, not everybody finds it easy to make changes in their lives, even if those changes will bring greater benefits. Thus, it is important for a coachee to go through each step of the coaching process thoroughly and not pass to the next one without completing the previous. Below you will find the 4 essential stages of the coaching process.
“The difference between a successful person and others is not a lack of strength, not a lack of knowledge, but rather a lack of will”. Being a football coach requires someone who can be a great communicator. This person needs to understand communication on both sides an individual can not just demand that it's a one way street where you talk and athletes listen. The career of coaching requires history of the game knowledge of the game, extensive education, and positive and negatives aspects of the game.
As a coach you do fail sometimes and that's what is difficult but Michael Jordan once said, “I’ve failed over and over and over again in my life and that is why I succeeded.” I believe that this goes for coaching as well because you are going to fail over and over again and you will soon see that those failures are actually your accomplishments. No one said life was easy but coaching can be easy and it’s a way to connect with players and others and bring out the best in people and show that people can work together and accomplish many things no matter how difficult or hard it is and it can be fun and thrilling at the same
A coach will need to come across as someone that can keep information confidential. They will need to be a good listener; they will need to be good at setting out structured time frames for the coaching to be effective. They need to be approachable so the coachee feels comfortable when they have questions. The coachee has to feel like the coach is impartial that they will not try to sway or lead them to decisions that may not be their own. The coach will need to be thought invoking and encourage the coachee to analyse their work.
...impact on an athlete’s life in a positive way and lead them in a successful direction, it all lies within their hands. A positive healthy relationship between a coach and a player is a key aspect for a successful coach.
Coaching, however challenging, is a great way to influence the lives of others while also building their character. For as long as there have been sports, there have been people teaching the sport to the players and making them better at it. Coaches must have certain qualities in order to obtain success. One must also look at a coach’s motivation for his job, his passion for what he does, his methods for coaching, and how he became a coach in order to fully understand him. There are many questions someone may want to ask a coach about his profession if they are interested in coaching.
In becoming a football coach, they may believe that they are teaching young men how to play and be responsible, but in reality they are teaching the coach. In order to become a coach, a bachelor’s degree is needed (). However, they need a bachelor’s degree because, they cannot really be a coach and also have to teach a class in high school. The key skills needed is to have patience, creativity, compassion, and understanding the way the game is played (). Have to have the patience for everyone that
In today’s society being a coach can be extremely complicated especially compared to earlier years. Coaching requires not only many technical and personal skills but also has to include positive psychology that will affect all athletes regardless of gender, age, and race. After reading various articles this leads me to the question, what is a coach? How do coaches differ from one another? In addition are we forgetting the importance of not only coaching but the sports psychology aspect of coaching overall? Regardless of what you may have read or heard I believe not only do all coaches have their own coaching style but every coaching technique and style is different. Coaching styles and positive psychology are two techniques that can provide
“People are remarkably bad at remembering long lists of goals. One may have learned this at a professional level when trying to get my high-performance coaching clients to stay on track; the longer their lists of to-dos and goals, the more overwhelmed and off-track they got. Clarity comes with simplicity.” As a child he always looked at being able to play or coach a sport at the professional level. For the reason of me just loving the game of Basketball. Also i know it will make an impact on lives because people look up to you and the money in make will give back to communities and change lives around you. The career of a Professional Coach is a challenging and fun career, because of the level of competition and it’s a dream job. The research will describe the career of
Coaching is a useful way of developing people 's skills and abilities, and of heightening performance. Rocereto et.al (2011), defined coaching as a “method which aims to achieve self-actualization by facilitating learning and development processes to promote the resource base of another person.” This particular management style can assist with minor issues and challenges before they become major problems. The coaching management style, is an effective process
A sport coaching is an important way of developing the career of athletes. It involves a manager or a coach helping sportspeople to utilize their abilities and advance in their sports careers. Coaches usually watch his/her performer in a match, identify areas that need improvement in the performer’s sporting, and develop plans for training sessions that will be used to correct the problems identified. The coach usually applies some skills which are usually gained through formal education and training or through experience and observation (Knowles et al 2005). This includes the use of an appropriate coaching philosophy to learn the psychological aspects of sportspeople and set the stage for performance within a sports team. A coaching philosophy
Motivation needs motivators to help athletes when they seem to have nothing left. Although in sports we want to see consistent plays, performance, and skills, motivation is something that is not consistent. “Athlete’s motivation is being permanently upgraded, developed and changed under the different environmental influences present during sports participation” (Baric, 2007). “Situational factors act interactively on athletes’ dispositions; the variations in sports behavior are the functions of personal characteristics (goals, skills, knowledge, personality traits, etc.) and the environmental influences (physical and social alike)” (Baric, 2007). Personal and environmental influence can make a difference in how an athlete gains motivation. Motivation from a coach or a parent can lead an athlete to either see the support in a negative or positive view. Screaming, yelling, body language, and tone of voice can really present what someone is saying to be considered either in a positive or negative light. As a coach, you have to understand how you are presenting yourself towards your team or athlete. Parents, teammates, and supporters have to analyze how they are coming off within a situation especially when you are trying to motivate someone. When you have a disconnection between your verbal and non-verbal communication, an athlete can take the information and motivation as a negative and not positively. Coaches as everyone else need to learn how to communicate with their athletes and team. Motivation is something all athlete should posse on their own, but sometimes athlete needs support. No championship or a game was won, because of one person it takes coaches, parents, supporters, trainers, and so much more to make an athlete want to win even if it is a backyard game. Motivation plays a huge role in what a coach can do not only in a leadership role or
This is not unexpected if considering the origins of the coaching efficacy theory. The theory was developed by recognizing key stages of effective coaching frequently talk about in the coaching education works and also through talking with coaches (Feltz et al., 1999). Therefore, the stages of coaching efficacy link to important area of effective coaching. Furthermore, high-efficacy coaches are more likely to be valuable in their career and consequently more effective in coaching their athletes. Without a doubt, the greater performance levels (Feltz et al., 1999) and the winning percentages (Myers et al., 2005) have been shown in the teams of high-efficacy coaches when matched against teams of low-efficacy
