Leah Thrasher Mrs. Knox English IV March 16, 2014 Animal Rights When a pitbull named Oogy was first adopted, he was practically an unrecognizable dog. He was pure white except for the left side of his face which shone off rose pink scar tissue. Where his left ear should have been stood only a stump the size of a thumb. His mouth was lopsided with stitches coming out of the right end, and he looked more like a burn victim than a dog, yet he had an imperative look of joy about him. Oogy had been used as bait for dog fighting when he was only ten weeks old.
As I waited outside my mother’s home on a chilly afternoon, I had seen a dog barking at an innocent white cat. Of course my mom lived in a neighborhood that was polluted with animals. Maybe, it was because she grew up on a farm with about five dogs so for her to see animals was a normal thing. Somehow, she was gifted to love and nurture. The vibe she gave was natural and impossible to miss.
When I was three years old, I spent my summer in a pond by my home chasing frogs and snakes. When I was five years old, my mother found me sleeping under a mare with her foal. When I was fifteen I spent my spare time working for a family friend’s thoroughbred farm. However, my first love for animal care was born when I was nineteen when I first held an owl. I was an extremely fortunate child to grow up in the Maine wilderness as I did, learning to marvel at the raw beauty of nature at a young age. I attended a nature themed summer camp every year throughout my youth, learning about the sciences of soil and water systems and how they impacted the animals around them. I took every opportunity to immerse myself in animals at any opportunity, from

Yet they hold a special place in their owners’ hearts, they can without a doubt feel, show their different emotions, and they can most definitely love. In recent years there has been a massive increase in animal rights awareness, leading to a better understanding and knowledge in the subject of the humane treatment of animals. Where do humans draw the line between the concern of equality, and simple survival?
Animal abuse is a travesty in our world that must be stopped. Every year, millions of animals suffer because of human actions, directly or indirectly. Whether it’s abused dogs and cats or even mistreated circus animals, their suffering is as real as it would be if it happened to us. Even animals who are raised on farms simply for human consumption should not have to suffer. One of the worst parts of humanity’s role in animal abuse is that there are easy ways for people to help that they are either ignorant of or simply refuse to do. Many animals such as monkey undergo painful suffering or even death as a result of scientific research for the sake of humans’ health. Among the animals monkeys are the main victims of the scientists’ experiments because of their human-like characteristics and physical process to humans. I will discuss each one in more detail. Many people who abuse animals do not realize that they are actually hurting animals, this is known as unintentional. When some people try to discipline their pets, they use tactics that they think are acceptable, when in reality, this is probably not the best way. People also abuse animals due to lack of attention, such as forgetting to feed and water the animals for a number of days.
