We are Unique A journey is when exposure to events leave impressions on you, thus creating your unique individuality. Internal journeys have an impact on you because the lessons learned stay with you forever, and help form who you are. Physical journeys leave impressions on you and what you learn is only relevant during that period of time, for instance if you are temporarily disabled. Internal and physical journeys aren’t usually experienced separately. Instead, they are intertwined and need each other for you to gain self-growth. An internal journey is more significant than a physical journey because it helps you discover unknown qualities of yourself. The hidden qualities that define you can be discovered in multiple ways. The depression started with hearing my doctor say that I needed ACL surgery again. The reason I was affected by depression this time, was he also said I could no longer play soccer. Therefore, I had no motivation to have a speedy recovery. Additionally, since I have always identified as an athlete I needed to rearrange my priorities and rethink my life choices. The second surgery was worse than the first because I knew how painful my recovery was going to be. I felt defeated because I knew I would be bedridden for more than three weeks. And it would take at least a year to fully recover and at the end I still wouldn’t be able to play soccer. Being bedridden and in a lot of pain affected my sleep, appetite and energy adding to my depression. I began to discuss my physical therapy regime with my physical therapist and developed an interest in PT. This interest has developed into a desire to become a Physical Therapist. Although this internal journey included painful weeks being bedridden, years of physical therapy and an identity change. It resulted in discovering the profession I wanted to be in and the intelligence to pursue it. Uniqueness can be defined through the hardships you conquer or by how others perceive you. One way other people can identify you is by your cultural background. This is shown in “How it Feels to be Colored Me” by Zora Neale Hurston by her realizing that by her changing communities, people identified her based on her appearance and not by her personality or abilities. People categorized her by her appearance because that was how the community was organized, it was by race not by uniqueness. She related the thought of being known by your outer shell and what you possess by referencing a
Experiences of journeys provide insights into the lives of individuals and the world around them
What is identity? Often, people confuse identity with personality. While personality describes your personal qualities such as being shy or outgoing, identity involves a combination of different aspects. Culture, language, family, friends, and society are a few of the aspects that helps shape a person's identity. For a person to feel identified, they must share similarities or differences with others. Sharing personality traits is effortless, but identity requires active engagement. Identity also involves a combination of how you see yourself and how others see you. How others see you can be influenced by economic, social, and physical constraints. These constraints cause a tension between how much control you have in constructing your own
Individuality is the quality or character of a particular person or thing that distinguishes them from others of the same kind, especially when strongly marked. According
During the ninth grade, I injured my knee playing soccer. The initial MRI did not show any tears, but the orthapedic surgeon did notice I was weak medially and that my patella was tracking laterally. He sent me to therapy to strengthen the inside of my leg and hopefully pull my kneecap medially. I started going to therapy and I adored my therapist, Kelley. Even though the exercises weren’t always fun or pain free I looked forward to therapy. She made things fun, and since I was interested in the field, would explain why I was doing certain exercises compared to others. The pain didn’t go away and she worked to help figure ...
A physical journey occurs as a direct result of travelling from one place to another over land, sea or even space. The physical journey can occur individually or collectively, but always involves more than mere movement. Instead physical journeys are accompanied by inner growth and development, catalysed by the experiences and the decisions that impact the outcome of the journey. These journey concepts and the interrelationship between physical and emotional journeys is exemplified in the text; The Adventures of Huckleberry Finn by Mark Twain, The Road Not Taken by Robert Frost, the children’s book Lost and Found by Oliver Jeffers and the film Stand By Me directed by Rob Reiner.
“It’s a blessed thing that in every stage in every age some one has had the individuality and courage enough to stand by his own convictions.” The part of me that sums up my identity best is not the adjectives given by family, or the faults I find in myself. My identity is my desire to better myself, and my passion for children. My identity is who I want to be and what I do to accomplish my goals My identity is the feelings and emotions I pour into my journal every day, and the way I feel when I do something right. My identity is not what others thing of me or what I think of myself after a bad day. My identity is the love and confidence I have in myslef, and the beauty inside.
Being yourself, being who you are. When you hear those two lines you may think they mean the same thing but do they? Think about it, you were born into this world a tiny little baby with no ideas, or preferences, but as you grew you developed a personal identity, but did it really develop or was it in you to begin with. Such questions are what leads to the great debate of nature vs nurture. If you believe you were born already with a personality, then you take the side of nature. on the other hand if you believe that your personality developed based on influences in your life beginning when you were a child then you believe in nurture. Two totally different theories, both which are believed to make us who we are.
There are millions of words across the globe that are used to describe people and uncover their identity, but what is identity? How can you begin to describe something that varies so greatly from one human being to another? Can you create a universal meaning for a word describing human concepts that people often fail to define for themselves? Of course there isn't one definition to define such a word. It is an intricate aspect of human nature, and it has a definition just as complex.
My story starts like many others around this world; unfortunately being raised in a poor situation. I grew up in a single parent family, with my five other siblings. From a very young age, I was determined to succeed at any goal I ever dreamt of. Seeing my mother struggle inspired me to work hard and go after what I wanted in life. I didn’t have the money like many others did growing up. I had to work multiple jobs to put myself through school and pursue the activities and social outings of my youth.
I now accept that I may never reach the goal of getting to know “who I am.” I realized a mythological quest for self-discovery was inherently flawed. Instead, I began to focus more on developing myself.
I am by myself wearing my blue jeans and an old flannel shirt. It is cool outside but I decided to leave my gloves at home, feeling comfortable with my warm shirt and my sturdy boots.
How many times have people asked themselves, who am I? What defines me? Culture plays a very important role in the identity of people. People are born in a culture, their family's culture, but not with an already established culture. The term culture refers to the values, beliefs, customs, style of dress, food, songs and stories that are shared and learned in a characteristic group. On the other hand, identity is a set of features, attributes and characteristics that define a person. Identity is constructed by language, social structure, gender orientation and cultural patterns. Although many do not relate these two themes, there is a complex relationship between culture and identity.
Distinctiveness refers to whether an individual displays different behaviors in different situations. What we want to know is whether the observed behavior is unusual. If it is, the observer is likely to give the behavior an external attribution. If this action is not unusual, it will probably be judged as internal.
Be yourself– we often hear that phrase as a piece of advice, whether in real life or in fictionalized accounts of human life in media such as film or books. Being one’s true self is often touted as an ideal to strive for. It is believed to be able to grant one a happy, content life, since being yourself would mean you would be free to make the right decisions in your life without complying society’s expectations – you would not need to constantly clash with your conscience. Nowadays, however, being your true self may prove a daunting task.
Recognizing who we are not is good in knowing who we are, but it is only the first step
