Pedestrians are a common sight in any metro region, and that includes the East Valley area. Millions of tourists visit Arizona every year. In addition, many of the people who work and live here take advantage of the dry weather to walk where they need to go. The downside to this is that it sometimes leads to collisions between pedestrians and cars, many of which happen at a crosswalk. Personal injury attorneys represent numerous people who have suffered pedestrian accidents and crosswalk injuries. Unfortunately, pedestrian accidents are a common occurrence statewide – not just in the Valley region. Every year more than 1,500 collisions take place, and nearly all of them resulted in some form of injury. Those numbers hold relatively steady
The stories “The Ones Who Walk Away” by Ursula Le Guin and “The Pedestrian” by Ray Bradbury, shows how a society is appeared to be perfect when in reality it is not a perfect society. Have humans made any effort in resulting utopia, but not just desiring for it? Usually the stories are predicted to the imagination of a Utopia, but their actions result into a dystopian society. Many stories are based on a utopia, yet one makes it end into a dystopia. For instance, humans think that Earth can become a paradise, but they know that in order for the earth to become a paradise they need to be evil to others. What they do not understand is that in order to bring happiness and make something perfect, one has to be good to everyone and should give others the equal right. The stories “The One Who Walk Away From Omelas by Ursula Le Guin and “The Pedestrian” by Ray Bradbury expresses how the society starts off from utopia and creates
The problem behavior associated with individuals making bad food choices when presented with unhealthy food will need to be observed so that we may understand how to change this behavior as it is unhealthy and harmful to health overall. Are poor choices in different foods causing obesity? Making poor choices when it comes to food is an
At Ten P.m on September 23, 2006, my mother Kelli Elizabeth Dicks was hit by a car on Route 146 southbound trying to cross the high speed lane. She was being picked up by a friend. Instead of taking the exit and coming to the other side of the highway, her ride suggested she run across the street. The impact of the car caused her to be thrown 87 feet away from the original impact zone and land in a grassy patch of land, her shoes stayed where she was hit. She was immediately rushed to Rhode Island Hospital where she was treated for serious injuries. When she arrived at the hospital she was rushed into the operating room for an emergency surgery. The amount of injuries she sustained were unbelievable. She broke 18 different bones, lacerated her liver and her spleen, ruptured her bladder, and she collapsed both lungs. When she went in for her emergency operation, and had her
Millions of people all over the United States choose motorcycles over automobiles for the thrill, speed, and high performance capabilities. On the other hand, motorcycles are not at all the safest way of transportation. Motorcycles do not provide the passenger with the outer protection that cars provide, therefore, when one crashes, the results are usually much more serious. Injuries to the head are responsible for 76% of fatalities when dealing with motorcycle crashes many of which could have been prevented had the rider been wearing a helmet. For this reason, many states have adopted the motorcycle helmet law. The law states that every passengers must wear a helmet at all times when riding on a motorcycle. This law has created a great deal of controversy. One side supports the law, believing that it protects motorcyclists from danger and saves the economy a great deal of money. The other side argues that the law is unconstitutional and it violates our right to freedom. However, statistics show overwhelming support in favor of the motorcycle helmet law. Although wearing helmets cannot prevent motorcycle crashes, they can greatly reduce the number of deaths caused by head injury as well as lowering taxes, insurance rates, and health care costs. Therefore, the helmet law should be put into effect in every state across the United States.
"I am constantly worried about running into cars, pedestrians, etc." said Ali Gallant, a criminal justice middler at Northeastern University. "I am especially nervous because even if I am biking safely, the actions of others can have an impact on my safety and health.
Everyday many people witness and are exposed to many different situations and emergencies. Bystander effect is a social psychological phenomenon that refers to people who don’t offer any help in a situation to a victim when others are around. The research study by Abbate, Ruggieri, & Boca (2013) has shown that helping behavior can be easily primed. Many researchers and social psychologists over the years, have been studying how knowledge is activated in individual’s memory and how that information shapes and guides emotions, impressions, and judgments. For example studies by Bargh, Chen, and Burrows' (1996) mentioned in Abbate, Ruggieri, & Bocas’ (2013) work, explains the perspective on behavior and trait concepts that activate relative behavior. There studies concluded that unconscious behavioral priming is real that includes different mechanisms from the typically assumed cause of effect.
On May 18th, 2017 a vehicle struck pedestrians on a sidewalk in New York City's Times Square, tragically killing one individual and injuring 20 others. The driver of the vehicle drove a red Honda sedan against traffic and the car crashed into a pole and came to rest on 45th Street and Broadway before police took the driver away. Police confirmed the person who was killed was 18-year-old Alyssa Elsman of Portage, Michigan. Elsman's 13-year-old sister was also injured in the incident. The driver, 26-year-old Richard Rojas from the city's Bronx borough, was identified as the suspect. Rojas faces 20 counts of attempted murder, one count of aggravated vehicular homicide and a count of attempted murder in the second degree, according to the criminal complaint. The tragic accident could have been avoided if Richard Rojas attended a psychiatric rehabilitation with his mental health counselor, more security should have been around the Times Square area, and he should have had his license taken away after the DUI charges he faced back in 2008 and 2015. High populations of deer result in numerous deer-vehicle collisions and pose a serious threat to motorists. As was mentioned previously, it is estimated that each year in the United States 29,000 people are injured and more than 200 lose their lives in deer-vehicle collisions. More than 50,000 deer-vehicle collisions are estimated to occur in New York alone each year. According to McShea, “In 2009, the insurance industry estimated that 2.4 million deer–vehicle collisions had occurred over the previous 24 months, with an estimated cost of over 7 billion dollars and 300 human fatalities” (p.3). It is hard to ascertain an accurate number of collisions because many incidents go unreported. Research indicates that preventative methods currently being implemented, such as deer whistles and reflectors are ineffective. Nighttime imposes demanding and critical driving conditions that cannot be accommodated sufficiently or satisfactory by drivers. Deer are mainly nocturnal beings but are not restricted to night movement only. Autumn is deer breeding season and in many areas, deer hunting season. During this time, deer are more active and, as a result, they are on roadways more often. Deer and vehicle collisions are a major problem and occur nationwide. From little rural areas to densely urbanized communities, no community is
Did you know that thinking allows human to make sense or, interpret, represent or model the world they experience, and to make predictions about the world.Well in the two stories “Us and Them” and “The Pedestrian,” the character’s thoughts and actions reveal aspects of his personality. In “Us and Them” the author writes the story based on his own experience during his childhood. It talks about how everybody has a T.V besides that one family who is very behind. Next in “The Pedestrian” it talks about a guy named Mead and he is a person who is just like Mr. Tomkey from “Us and Then” who doesn’t believe in television and doesn’t watches it. In both stories, the character’s actions reveal and express its personality.
Bystander effect, (Darley & Latane, 1970) refers to decrease in helping response when there are bystanders around relative to no bystanders. Referring to previous study stating that there are some cases of which group size may promote helping instead of hindering it (Fischer et al., 2011). Researchers then speculate the possibility of positive influences from bystanders by taking public self-awareness into consideration. Researchers proposed that high public self-awareness would reverse the bystander effect in this study with 2 independent variables which are bystander and presence on the forum. They are defined as number of bystanders (absent vs present) and salience of name (salient vs non-salient) respectively. 86 students are randomly assigned to one of the four conditions in the experiment. Response of participants in the online forum is the operational definition for the dependent variable of helping behavior. The result shows that number of response increases with respect to increase in bystanders when public self-awareness is enhanced by using accountability cue (Bommel et al., 2012). Participants were asked to rate how notable they were from their view afterwards as a manipulation check.
Bibb Latané and John Darley, two psychologists, studied the bystander effect during their experimentation after the murder of Kitty Genovese. The Bystander Effect refers to the effect that bystanders have during the intervention of an emergency. Latané and Darley used a series of experiments to look at different aspects of the bystander effect; The series of experiments included smoke, a lady in distress, hand in the till, stolen beer, “children don’t fight like that,” and fit to be tried (Latané & Darley, 1970). Latané and Darley asked, “What is the underlying force in mankind toward altruism?” and “what determines in a particular situation whether one person will help another?” Their hypothesis was that “the number of other people present
Being different often leads to loneliness, and loneliness often leads to despair. These qualities cause some to become outsiders, therefore they view certain things in alternative ways. Both short stories, “The Pedestrian” by Ray Bradbury and “A Clean, Well-Lighted Place” by Ernest Hemingway, project the universal theme of character desolation and how this occurs for the characters due to the ignorance of the society around them.

On the afternoon of January 25, a pedestrian was hit on I-465 Southbound. The situation is quite unique in that the man had stopped his vehicle on the shoulder of the road and had proceeded to strip as he walked down the roadway. By the time the man walked into traffic and was hit, he was naked. The man is believed to have acted under the influence of drugs and will charges with both public intoxication and indecent exposure. As a pedestrian, it is probably common sense to keep your clothes on, but there are other things you might be doing which could put you in danger as a pedestrian.
Walking has become an important research method that presents sociologists an opportunity to experience the urban landscape. Walking allows one to broaden the mind, and while experiencing the uniqueness of one’s environment. Unlike other methods, walking allows the researcher to interact with the people in the specific urban area and establish connections with them (Shortell, 2016). Before entering this exercise of walking as a research method for urban practice, the contemplation of my ability to endure the amount of walking needed for this research is disconcerting. Even though I’ve lived in Queens (which is considered the city) for the entirety of my scholastic years, the convenience of driving since my sophomore year in high school has allocated me in a reliance state of being. So, the concern of not having the endurance to complete this research has affected my choice for my regional site chosen. The neighborhood for which of interest would be one that is easy to get through with an immense amount of social activity to keep me
