INTRODUCTION This report set out to clarify the significant influence of mobile phone in general and specifically on youth, its positive and negative aspects in terms of social life, safety, health and studying alongside with real evidences obtained from recent research. The idea of communicating using mobile phone was first introduced in 1947 by Bell Laboratories (Merlin Thanga Joy, 2010), and it was initially made to accompany businessman and not to support personal life (Campbell, 2005). However, according to (Aoki and Downes, 2003), mobile phone has gradually become an essential part of young generation’s daily life. The first section will draw readers’ attentions to the popularity of mobile phone among young people. The following section addresses the positive side of mobile phone in terms of accompanying adolescents. On the other hand, the third section would explain the flip side of mobile phone when it negatively affects young people. Finally, the last section would discuss about whether or not young people should use mobile phone by weighing the pros and cons with the support from statistical findings. MOBILE PHONE AND ITS INFLUENCE Firstly, Graph 1 showed that the number of subscriptions increased gradually as the population grew and reached 6.8 billion out of the world population of 7.1 billion (International Telecommunication Union, 2013). Furthermore, Table 1 briefly illustrates the condition of the world in 2005 in terms of mobile usage. The total subscription was approximately 2.1 billion and concentrated on 15 countries including the USA (202 million) and the UK (58 million) (Merlin Thanga Joy, 2010). In the essay “Our Cell Phones, Our Selves” written by Christine Rosen, the author presents a brief history on how cell phones were introduced into society and how this artifact changed people’s interactions in the physical space. Rosen describes the first cell phone that appeared in 1983 as “hardly elegant,” big and expensive (458). Cell phones at that time were mainly used by important and affluent people. If a mother wants to inform her kids that she would be late to pick them up from their school, the cell phone would provide a good medium to communicate that message. The cutting-edge technology of cell phones at your fingertips is a very powerful device that can be used to connect with people from all around the world, and it can also save lives as well in emergency situations. However, public institutions such as schools and libraries have gotten to the point where cell phones have become a major controversial issue. Improper cellular usage by the youth mainly caused this. Not just the youth, but adults too are unknown of the potential the cell phone has in terms of accessing information quickly and efficiently. Misuse of the revolutionary aspects of cell-phone technology among the youth and adults alike needs to be recognized in order for cell-phone technology to truly be beneficial to our society in public institutions.
In the article entitled, “Our Cell Phones Ourselves”, Christine Rosen describes how cell phones have changed the way we communicate. Rosen tells the readers the main purpose for cell phone use in the past, versus present day. Her purpose is to make society aware of how cell phones have influenced our lives in order to inspire change as to how we view our cell phones. Rosen directs her writing to everyone in the present day by describing the negative results of cell phone use and how it impacts our lives and those around us. Without a doubt, cell phones are going to be a part of our world, but it is the responsibility of every cell phone owner to exercise self control and understand that a cell phone is nothing more than a device.
It starts in grade school now, “Why can’t I have a cell phone; everybody else does?” From the perspective of a Generation Y or the Millennials, a person born between 1984- 2002, owning a cell phone did not take place until after high school. This makes it hard to imagine an eight year old toting around a cell phone. Parents have to make a decision based on a child’s maturity level as well as asking the big question: Will ownership of a cell phone help or hinder the child? Children under the age of thirteen and using electronic devices is not a good idea due to their innocence and how easily they can be manipulated. The way irritation is connected to the addictive quality is that it slowly develops a mental illness. Common illnesses include depression, anxiety and frequent anger issues.
