Artificial intelligence refers to the ability of machines to make decisions and perform duties on their own as if they were human beings. Primarily, artificial intelligence is associated with robots to form the term robotics. Robotics involves all the processes involved in the creation, management, development, use, and maintenance of robots. Robots came about as a result of technological development, and since their inception, they have affected various industries and sectors. Transportation is one of the areas that has been affected by artificial intelligence (AI), and there is still more promise of AI involvement in transportation. Overly, there are expectations for more positive impacts on transportation from robotics as compared to the …show more content…
This is because power for transport carriages was transferred from animal and human effort to mechanical. Locomotives began to be used as they were powered by steam and internal combustion engines. Moreover, as Hensher (86) states, the concept of the internal combustion engine led to the development of vehicles and other modern powered carriages. The pressure to find more and better means of transport led to the establishment of trains as well as aero planes. This did not require similar construction and design features like those of vehicles instead, trains needed railway lines whereas planes were to fly in air. In this regard, aero planes required extra sensors, measuring instruments, as well as navigation systems to ensure that they fly safely. This was the first instance of using machines, and it proved to have had a significant effect when a few years later man successfully managed to travel to the moon for the first time. This maiden moon flight highlighted the potential of using robotics as almost everything in the spacecraft which was used depended on artificial …show more content…
First of all, robotics offer more safety and speed that is unmatched by any human beings. This is because the concept of artificial intelligence allows transport vessels to recognize the presence of other objects and avoid colliding. For instance, the radar system in planes allows them to locate nearby aircrafts and change their course accordingly and avoid colliding in mid-air. Regarding vehicles, the presence of a self-inflating airbag in case of an accident prevents injury to vehicle occupants during collisions. Incorporation of robotics in transport has also helped reduce the costs associated with transportation. This is because modern technologies allow less use of fuel since its injection in the engine is controlled by artificial intelligence systems (Davidson, Peter, & Anabelle 2). Moreover, use of artificial intelligence systems in trains has seen the removal of the driver, a fact that leads to saving if costs that would have been spend in paying individuals in such positions. Moreover, robotics and artificial intelligence help reduce pollution due to transportation emissions. This is because there are systems which prevent emissions from automobiles such as active catalytic converters. Moreover, by the fact that artificial systems contribute to fuel saving, they result in fewer emissions as less fuel is burnt. Lastly, using vehicles or planes with
We live in a time where technology is at the center of our society. We use technology on a daily basis, for the simplest tasks, or to aid us in our jobs, and don’t give a second thought to whether these tools are actually helping us. Writers such as Kevin Kelly and Clive Thompson argue that the use of technology actually helps us humans; whiles writers such as Nicholas Carr argue that technology affects people’s abilities to learn information negatively.
When people hear the term “FIRST Robotics” or hear anything related to robotics, they automatically assume that it has something to do with robots destroying each other or nerds sitting in the corner eating pizza and building small robots; I used to be one of those people who thought that before joining FIRST Robotics. In all honesty, I was very reluctant on becoming a part of FIRST Robotics in the first place because I did not know if I would fit in or even enjoy it for that matter. However, thanks to two special people I gave FIRST Robotics a shot, and I’m thankful that I did because I wouldn’t be the person that I am today. FIRST Robotics has greatly impacted my high school experience by teaching me life skills that I can’t learn in the classroom, forming new bonds and
Companies like Google, Tesla and Nissan, among others, have announced over the past few years that their companies are trying to develop self-driving or autonomous cars [Ref. 1 and 2]. Self-driving cars can provide many benefits to the average consumer. Studies have shown that because computers can react and process information many times faster than a human being, crashes on streets and roads can be decreased with quick and consistent evasion maneuvers by the autonomous car. They can also help maximize fuel economy by calculating the most direct and fastest routes. When the driving of an autonomous car demonstrates that the computer can safely and reliably transport the passengers to their destination, this frees up the passengers to do other things that they would not normally be able to do if they were driving the car manually. For this reason, self-driving cars can help maximize productivity of their passengers.
The term autonomous refers to the capability of acting independently, or having the freedom to do so. A self-driving car is an autonomous car, which has the ability to sense its environment and navigating without any human operations. These types of cars are built to make safe and smart decisions on the road. In the past years, automobile companies have begun to introduce advanced driver assistance systems that are capable of parking, switching lanes, and braking in case of an emergency on their own, without the driver’s assistance. Automated vehicles are capable of maneuvering through street traffic, as well as other natural and man-made obstacles along the way. Therefore, this technology might completely change the methods of transportation.
The second type of artificial intelligence pertains to machines capable of monitoring the environment and storing information as reference for future reactive behaviors. This type of machine classifies the technology added to more modern and advanced tools such as self-driving cars. This technology acts as a preprogrammed depiction of reality. For example, it tells the car about road markers, stop signs, traffic lights, and even the terrain on which the car drives. On the whole, this type of artificial intelligence is the most advanced currently existing in modern
Artificial intelligence has come a long way since the first robot. In 1950, Alan Turing of Britain publishes, Computer Machinery and Intelligence. This book was proposed to be the birth of artificial intelligence as we know it. The first robot that presents the usage of artificial intelligence was built in 1969. The purpose of this robot was to try out navigation using basic tools such as cameras and bump sensors (Marshall 371). Since then, we have made a million robots way better than this one and we’re going to continue doing so. While the world advances, so is technology. It’s slowly progressing and become better and more reliable. Artificial intelligence is a certain type of technology that is resourceful to our nation. We are using it in the medical field, it’s been helpful to military forces, and it’s helping our world become a better place.
The Industrial Revolution had an influence on many different aspects of our lives. One of those aspects was transportation. Before railroads were invented, people would use animals and carts to transport some of their products, ("History of Trains."). Towards the start of the Industrial Revolution railroads were introduced. Railroads and steam engines were first introduced starting in the beginning of the 1800s, ("History of Trains"). Railroads granted access to remote areas, more jobs, shortened time travel, and could transported a larger group of people and goods.
Technology is evolving faster than ever these days, however there is one technology that could revolutionize the transportation industry. This technology is called autonomous cars, also known as self-driving cars. Autonomous cars can be defined as a vehicle that is capable of sensing its environment, and navigating without human input. Using different techniques such as GPS and radar, autonomous cars can detect surroundings, thus removing the human element in driving. This would have a positive effect in more ways than we could ever imagine. Research suggests that self-driving cars will become more abundant in the future because they will be more cost-effective, enhance safety, and decrease traffic congestion.
As our world expands through the growing abilities and applications of computers in our everyday lives, it seems that the role of the computer has been reversed. Before we knew that the computer only understood what we programmed it to understand; however, now the majority of our society is learning more from computers than they are able to input into it. Dumm (1986 p.69)
Artificial Intelligence, also known as AI, allows a machine to function as if the machine has the capability to think like a human. While we are not expecting any hovering cars anytime soon, artificial intelligence is projected to have a major impact on the labor force and will likely replace about half the workforce in the United States in the decades to come. The research in artificial intelligence is advancing rapidly at an unstoppable rate. So while many people feel threatened by the possibility of a robot taking over their job, computer scientists actually propose that robots would benefit a country’s efficiency of production, allowing individuals to reap the benefits of the robots. For the advantage of all, researchers and analysts have begun to mend the past ideas of human-robot interaction. They have pulled inspiration from literary works of Isaac Asimov whom many saw as the first roboticist ahead of his time, and have also gotten ideas of scholarly research done by expert analysts. These efforts have began to create an idea of a work force where humans and robots work together in harmony, on a daily basis.
Before the 17th century, innovations in the world were very few. The largest number of the population was farmers, and they had to grow their own food. On the other side, after the year 1760, when the industrial revolution started, the entire world began to experience a great amount of transformations both economic and social. In the present day, we are still feeling and seeing those modifications. Technology innovations have one of the largest impacts affecting the world nowadays. After all this new technology being developed, a new revolution is approaching; a transaction that may or not change our lives forever. Healthcare and education will see a positive impact, while labor jobs like factory workers and tellers will be affected in a negative way by the future technology.
Robots are machines that can do the work of a person and that work automatically or are controlled by a computer (Merriam-Webster, 2014). The Robot Institute of America (circa 1979) defines robots as “a reprogrammable, multifunctional manipulator designed to move material, parts, tools, or specialized devices through various programmed motions for the performance of a variety of tasks” (Branwyn, G.). The Japanese Industrial Robot Association (JIRA) has classified robots based on the following: manually operated manipulators, sequential manipulators, programmable manipulators, numerically controlled robots, sensate robots, adaptive robots, smart robots, and intelligent mechatronic systems (Branwyn, G.). Robots have been improved over time and have proven to be efficient because the computer is controlling them. The history of robots goes as far back as the Ancient Greeks and Romans for the use of toys, tool...
The impressive quick development of new revolutionary technologies represents one major evolution factor of the 21st century. Scientific researchers and most enterprises work closely on the implementation of these new technologies, although they appear as public controversies. The humans’ concern about Artificial Intelligence (AI), among many others, raises in importance, as one notices the increasing number of recent movies, such as Ex Machina, depicting the relationship between robots and their creators. Companies’ growing interest for the employment of AI robots gives rise to a significant reflection on the emerging issue. Conservatives may value human interactions and autonomy, as well as equality, whereas robots’ employment relies on effectiveness
Robotics is a branch of physics and became the king of sciences and made the world to think about the work done by humans physically can done by machines which are robots . The combination of mechatronics and automation are to create robots. The technology of automated machines trades in dangerous environments or manufacturing processes in humans. To perform self-governing scientific times, however, the functionality of robots and machines to create applications grow significantly until the 20th century, the concept of research. Historically, the robots to imitate human behavior are often seen in the leg and are often similar to that of the management tasks. Continuous research, technology development, design, and construction of new robots for practical purposes, domestic, commercial, or serve in the military, whether today, Robotics, a rapidly developing field. Several robots, bombs, mines and hazardous jobs people do zoos ' defusing exploring the ship. Many of the robots in the field of bio-inspired robotics, inspired by nature's terms. The word robot is the Slavic word robot, comes from The word robot was introduced in 1920 to play Karel Čapek's RUR, or Rossum's Universal Robots.
For example, the self-driving car fleet from Uber is already under active development and testing in Pittsburg. Competitiveness with Google Translate and Apple Siri show promise with language learning. With improvements in computer vision and legged locomotion, robots for unstructured environments become practical; these might include agricultural and service settings and helping humans (especially the elderly and infirm) with domestic chores. Finally, as machines improve their grasp of language, search engines and "personal assistants" on mobile phones will change from indexing web pages to understanding web pages, leading to qualitative improvements in their ability to answer questions, synthesize new information, offer advice, and connect the dots. AI may also have a substantial impact on areas of science, such as systems biology, where the complexity and volume of information challenges human abilities. (Russell,
