1. Who are Civil Engineers? Civil engineers are the people in our world who design, create, and construct both new and old innovative ideas. The role of a civil engineer is to identify a problem, analyze its requirements and conditions, and then design a solution to the problem. Civil engineers are responsible for maintaining and operating infrastructure systems of a society such as bridges, hospitals, airports, dams etc. Civil engineers are also in charge of ensuring protocols such as workers health and safety are followed in the workplace which they are in charge of, this is done by devising methods in which tasks will be carried out which ensure that these safety and ethics codes will be followed. Impacts of Bridges on society and its . Environment Bridges have major impacts on both the culture of a community and its accessibility. When a bridge is constructed in an area it allows for more direct transport in and out of the community, increasing economic growth in the area. However, this bridge will also make the area far more desirable as it becomes easier to get to major centers such as hospitals or CBD’s from the town, which will cause more people to want to move into the community. This increase of foreign people to the community may result in a loss of original culture as they bring new things into the society, this can be viewed as a positive or negative phenomenon. In regards to the environment, bridges can affect aquatic life catastrophically, as they may use some chemicals for maintenance that are innately carcinogenic, which can wreak havoc on the aquatic environment as it contaminates the surrounding environment. However, the structure is required at some point, as a community can only reach a certain point in development without connecting to a major trade area or business district. It seems obvious that all of the prior examples bring economic growth and development to that certain place. However, there is a less obvious question to be asked. The bridge we chose to select for our research paper is the Blue Water Bridge. The Blue Water Bridge spreads across the St. Clair River and conducts international traffic between Port Huron, Michigan, and Point Edward and Sarnia, Ontario. According to the Michigan Department of Transportation, “Located near the I-94 and I-69 interchange, the bridge forms a critical gateway linking Canada and the United States”. Over 120,000 vehicles and almost 7,000 people cross the Brooklyn Bridge daily. It’s important that these bridges we use are structurally sound and safe to travel on. Roadways aren’t the only piece of infrastructure with a long history. Bridges work in tangent with roadways to provide the ability to transport over larger obstacles, whether it be water or land. The design of bridges largely depends on the task and the materials used. Like with roads, the early construction of bridges made use of wood and then stones; same as with roads; leveling methods by the use of smaller rocks were used. While these materials were able to construct a suspension bridge in 1849 which incorporated crossing a span of over 1,000 feet and suffice throughout the rest of nineteenth century, new materials eventually provided the opportunity for larger systems (Petroski, 2016, pg. 83).

Throughout my lifetime, I have never had to think very much about the working world and everything that went with it. All through high school I took classes I liked or thought would be interesting to me, but never thought that all of those classes were preparing me for what was to come. Before I knew it, it was time to go to college. The four years of high school had flown by and now it was time to choose a major for college. I had never given much thought as to what I wanted to do for the rest of my life. The only real occupations that I had really gotten to experience were teaching, the jobs that my parents had, and others such as doctors, dentist, most of the occupations that everyone sees while they are growing up. When I finally decided on my major, I chose engineering, but I didn’t know if I would like it or not. The only prior knowledge I had about it was the fact that my grandfather was an electrical and chemical engineer, and that my parents and teachers said that I would be good at engineering. Recently I have been interested in civil engineering, but what does one do with such a degree? What opportunities are available to a person with a degree in civil engineering on the job market? The broad curriculum that covers many different fields of engineering make civil engineering a major that allows a person to work in nearly any field they wish.
In the most basic sense, engineering means “making things happen.” It is the practical application of science and math, the two subjects I am most passionate about, to solve everyday problems. It opens up a world of opportunity to create innovative technology that influences many aspects of people’s lives, this giving an individual the power to make a difference. While I am deeply interested in the subjects that are the foundation of engineering, in addition I have many other personal reasons for pursuing civil engineering in specific.
