“Culture may even be described simply as that which makes life worth living.” (T.S Eliot, 1948) Culture is a theme that is frequently mentioned throughout The Illegal, a novel by Lawrence Hill. People are beginning to realise that different cultures have a lot to offer throughout the world. As society realises this we are able to utilize our diversity in our everyday life and unite our world.
Culture is something people are proud of, and people regularly show that culture is not something to be ashamed of. In chapter two Kano men are ganging up on members of the Faloo community, just because they dislike their way of life. Culture something that makes us all unique, and what gives our world its diversity. There are thousands of cultures around the world that play a role in everyday life. Since the world consists of many cultures, we become more enlightened when we learn about them, and can see our own through educated eyes. Culture is something that is all around us, no matter where we go. A place that offers a unique perspective on culture is Newmarket Main Street. Main Street attracts people from many cultural backgrounds because of its restaurants. In The Illegal Lawrence Hill shows us different and unique cultures in Zantoroland and Freedom State. In both of his mentioned places respect and unity is hard to come by because of the cultural differences.
