Acts of racism began riots in Los Angeles in 1994, having 60 people killed and more than 2300 injured, spending more than one billion dollars in repairs. This film, Freedom Writers, was directed by Richard LaGravenese, released at 2007. By using specific ideas, attitudes are promoted about the world through the audience’s perspective. In the film we are shown anti-violence and anti-gang in the classroom which they overcome adversity even though they are experiencing inequality of education. Through the ideas of the film we promote attitudes of jubilance to the students and teacher, but also a sense of peace between them aside their race. A family spend meaningful time with each other and they do it frequently. They will have many common interests, willing to try new activities together and over all really enjoy each other’s company also recognising positive aspects of others and let them know that these qualities are valued (in this case, everyone respect each other even if they are a different race). Ms. Gruwell has provided trust to the students and vice versa by giving them a journal. She told the students if that they want her to read it, students can give her permission to read it. She also told them to put their journals at the closet if they want her to read it and that she will lock it at the end of the day. We are shown a montage of the students of writing on their diary and narrating their story and a scene mid shot of Erin Gruwell reading their journals. Ms. Gruwell’s classroom become a family from the activities that she provided and the trust that they developed as a class. This allowed them to start making a bond with each other. Like a family; they started going on trips like the Holocaust center and having dinner in a hotel. Positive Music is played when they raised money for their resources and they are celebrating, dancing together. They got new school resources which they never had from their bad behaviour and reputation of stealing and destroying property. Family is basically who you loved and who you care about. Erin Gruwell began her teaching career at Woodrow Wilson High School in Long Beach, California where the school is integrated but it’s not working. Adversity affects people’s characters and personalities every day. Although adversity may not affect everyone, an abundance of individuals are affected every day. I have faced adversity in my life. Ever since I was little I have been playing soccer, and every day I have been trying to get better and better. My sister plays soccer as well and I have been compared to her my whole life. While reading through the writings from Children and Families in our textbook, I see many different connotations of what “family” means either to the writer, or the meaning that the writer is trying to place in their story or poem. Often times the writer is portraying their own culture or that of which they are writing, and at other times they may be taking a straightforward, eye-opening look stand at what “family” has become to some people and that it needs to be changed back to a positive part of life. The idea of family is different from person to person. Regardless of the differences, everyone’s family is unique and special in their own way. No one can judge or discriminate against people for their meaning and interpretation of what a family looks like. For example, family may have two parents; one parent; or no parents (since these are brief phrases, semi-colons shouldn't be used). The variation and differences between families makes culture and society so diverse. Family does not have limitations or boundaries (true). Family dynamics and their structure have gone through many changes in the last 100 years. The development of diverse and unique family styles was very interesting and I was surprised by the many changes over the spectrum of time.
