, in The Hunger Games was to remind people the capital's superiority, to prevent any more rebellions. The hunger games is a test of superiority, strength and intelligences. It is a test of who could make shelter and defeat the harshest climates. It was a test of who could survive. In the book "the hunger games", I think the protagonist, Katniss embodies all these characteristics. This is why I think Katniss' lifestyle and characteristics helped her in the hunger because she was skilled with a bow, she had the responsibility of raising her family and she lived in poverty.
Firstly, Katniss' lifestyle and characteristics helped her in the hunger because she was skilled with a bow. Katniss' superiority with a bow had been truly portrayed and

emphasized through the progression of the book. Unlike many other people in the seam, Katniss owns a bow, that her father made before he died to a tragic accident.
She is an extremely skilled hunter because she has been the only factor allowing her family to eat every day. "She's excellent," says Peeta. "My father buys her squirrel. He always comments on how the arrows never pierce the body. She hits everyone in the eye." (7.19-21) from this quote, Peeta comments how precise and skilled Katniss is with a bow. He points out how Katniss is able to shoot the creature into the eye which is a very difficult task considering that the eyes of the squirrel is reality small portion of its whole body. Another great example showing Katniss' superiority with bows is at the end of chapter seven. "Without thinking, I pull an arrow from my quiver and send it straight at the Gamemakers' table. back. The arrow skewers the apple in the pig's mouth and pins it to the wall behind it. Everyone stares at me in disbelief". Like the previous quote, this shows the precision and accuracy that Katniss embodies with a bow. Finally, my last example is on page 220-222 when Katniss tears open the bag of apples triggering the mines to blows the supplies. This example again shows the accuracy and intelligence that Katniss demonstrates with a bow. From these three examples you could clearly see how skilled Katniss is with a bow and how it would much improve her chances in the games. Secondly, Katniss' lifestyle and characteristics helped her in the hunger because of the responsibility she had of raising her family.
She does whatever she must do to put food on the table, whether it is trading, stealing, or doing something illegal. During the day, Katniss would sneak out of the district and hunt to make ends meet for her family. Although this is illegal because it is an act of rebellion, this truly shows determination (This can be seen in page 6). "And you're good?" asks Haymitch. I have to think about it. I've been putting food on the table for four years. That's no small task". (7.19-21) this is a great example of showing that Katniss is the provider of the family and without her, the family would probably die in starvation. Another example is how great she is at gathering of food. She needed this skill in order to feed her family and because of her knowledge of the forest and woods, she knows her way around the wilderness, knows where to look for food, and how to build shelter, which is an extremely important skill in the games. Finally, part of her responsibility of the provider is also getting all supplies and needs for the family. She trades in the hob which is a black market to accommodate all the supplies for the family. Again this shows determination even if it means breaking the law and trading in the black market. All these examples, shows the responsibility of what Katniss brings to the table and how she is more than able capable in caring
for herself in the games. , in a poor area known as the “Seam.” Hunger and poverty are widespread for many of the residents, and since the death of her father, Katniss supports her younger sister and mother by hunting and gathering on restricted lands with an older boy named Gale. They split what they acquire between them, selling some things on the Black Market.
The Hunger Games was a good movie when it came out. This movie refers to a dystopia world in which there are 12 districts and a capitol who rules with an iron fist, in which the districts must provide a tribute to fight in an annual Hunger Game as a punishment for a past rebellion. Katniss Everdeen is a hunter from the 12th district, which Gale, her friend gives her tips on hunting. One day her sister, Primrose Everdeen, is chosen for the Hunger Games, and in order to save her, she volunteers instead to serve in the Games along with Peeta Mellark. During a TV interview, Peeta confesses her love for Katniss Everdeen, which causes the enragement of the latter; however, she later forgives him as he explains to her that it was only to gain sponsors. During the Hunger Games, she did not receive a lot of supplies except some medicine to cure a wound, but Districts 1 and 2 almost won the Game due to their training, and amount of supplies which Katniss destroys but cannot recover any of them. The Hunger Games was one of the best movies I ever watched because it has a little bit of everything and it captures the real-life survival game that we live on a daily basis.
Katniss and Rainsford both used their hunting knowledge to survive their challenges. Examples include when Katniss was looking for Peeta and found blood on the ground that could have easily been missed. When Katniss was at home she would look for the faint tracks of animals to hunt for food and applying these to the game helped her in finding Peeta. Rainsford also
As the famous screenwriter, Danny Boyle, once said, “That survival instinct, that will to live, that need to get back to life again, is more powerful than any consideration of taste, decency, politeness, manners, civility. Anything. It’s such a powerful force.” In The Hunger Games, the main character, Katniss Everdeen, has many strong characteristics, like her survival instincts. Because of these instincts she constantly protects and provides for the ones she cares for. In Suzanne Collins’ novel, The Hunger Games, the overarching theme is if people rely on their instincts they can survive anything, proven by Katniss Everdeen’s survival tactics before the Hunger Games, during the first few days of the Games, and after she finds another character,
Katniss is the main character in the novel, The Hunger Games. The author of this book is Suzanna Collins. Katniss is a 16 year old who has been chosen with 23 other tributes. In my class we have studied themes and key ideas such as Power of the Capitol, Competition against other tributes and Sacrifice for what Katniss acts and does in the Hunger Games. There are many themes but I have chosen these 3 because they show the most emotions and power.
Since her father’s death, Katniss has been providing for her family. Her hunting skills are so impressive that even Peeta points out her precision: “She hits every squirrel right in the eye” (89). As such an experienced hunter, Katniss is skilled with a bow and arrow, as well as a knife. We see this violence continue when she is on the train headed to the Capital. After Haymitch punches Peeta in the face, Katniss throws her knife at Haymitch’s hand: “I drive my knife into the table between his hand and the bottle, barely missing his fingers” (57). However, that act still was not enough for her; she then takes the knife and throws it across the room landing it in the wall. She knew that in order to get his attention she would have to make an impression. Katniss acts out in violence again when she is in the training room at the Capitol. During her private session after missing a couple shots with her bow and arrow, she takes a few difficult shots to try and impress the Gamemakers. However, she notices that most of them are more focused on a roasted pig than her. She becomes furious, knowing her life is at stake, and out of rage, she fires an arrow straight toward the Gamemakers that spears the apple in the pig’s mouth. The violent part of Katniss hates and does not comprehend the idea of owing people. After Katniss’s father had died, her family was starving and it seemed she had no other options. While sitting outside the bakery in the pouring rain, the young boy Peeta it seemed had purposely burnt the bread so that he could give it to Katniss. Even though in doing that it meant getting punished by his mother. Peeta had saved her life and she always feels like she owes him for this. Peeta is never able to understand this because he himself is not a killer. In Ender’s Game, Ender, even from a young age, has the innate killer instincts. In each of
For example, Katniss is strong, resourceful and independent. She cares for her mother and sister after her the death of her father, which is explained as having been caused by a horrible mining accident, leaves her mother in some sort of post-trauma psychosis. Being from one, if not the, poorest districts, Katniss must hunt what little she can to feed her family and herself while also making the most of her archery skill and trading whatever she can for any other essentials she can get her hands on in the local trading square, the Hob. When she goes into the Hunger Games after taking her sister’s place and going head to head with trained killers, she does not crack under pressure nor does she need the help of anybody but herself to come out victorious. Yes she does have Peeta with her for most of the latter part of the games and he does try to offer up his own little grain of sand by allying himself to the Career Pack in order to try to get them off of Katniss, but regardless of Peeta’s good intentions, she carries most of her own weight and then some almost completely by herself. She also decides to somewhat adopt Rue, the youngest girl in the games and take her under her wing. When Rue is murdered by Marvel, one of the Careers from District One, Katniss quickly avenges Rue’s assassination and shoots Marvel through the chest with her trusted arrow. Afterwards, he demonstrates her humanity and grief for Rue by covering Rue’s body with flowers in an attempt to give her a proper goodbye (Collins, 230-241). In the end of the book, she is able to do something no person, from any district ever, has been able to do. She bends the will of the Capitol and is able to save herself and the man that will eventually become her future husband, by her simple quick thinking and own
When Haymitch refuses to answer Katniss’ question she resorts to violence to gain an answer from him. Another example that follow Rousseau’s theory on human nature; due to the current conditions and her environment Katniss resorts to violence making her a “bad” person. Another example from the movie is when Katniss must prove her skills to a panel of judges; the judges ignore her and focus on the food that arrives. An angry Katniss shoots an arrow straight into the apple that was placed on to the pig’s mouth. So once again because of the fact that Katniss was feeling ignored from the judges she resorts to violence making her a “bad” person once again. Once the hunger games starts she becomes awful she is placed in situations and environments that make her kill others. Following Rousseau’s theory of human nature the once “good” Katniss we saw at the beginning of the movie is now a violent killing machine. When being chased by the boys and girls of different districts she must cut a tree branch down so that the tracker jackers attack them, due to her environment and fear of death she hurts others so that she may survive;
The movie The Hunger Games, originally based on a book by Suzanne Collins, is about a place called Panem, which is ruled by the Capitol and has 12 districts within it. These 12 districts are separated founded on their economic statuses, meaning the higher the district, the more impoverished the residents are. There are 2 tributes that are chosen to participate, forcibly, in The Hunger Games each year. Each competitor is instructed to eliminate one another in order to survive and come out on top. There is only one tribute allowed to come out of the arena alive. Katniss lives in District 12, which is the most impoverished district of them all, and she volunteers as tribute in “the Reaping” when her sister is chosen to participate. She and the other tribute from her district, Peeta, make it into the arena with the hopes that one of them comes out the winner and above all else, alive (Ross, 2012). I will refrain from going any further just in case you have not read the book or have not seen the movie. In terms of soci...
Katniss Everdeen is depicted in The Hunger Games as evidenced by her actions such as her strength, responsibility, and survival skills.
As an impoverished resident of District 12, the priorities that have shaped Katniss’ identity are those of survival. Whether is it in hunting the fields with her trusty bow and arrow, or trading her catch at the illegal hub, Katniss’ society has enabled her to hold many attributes and attitudes that would traditionally be considered as masculine. Her characteristic plait is done so for functional rather than fashionable purposes; she is a surrogate father over her sister Prim since his death in the coal mines; she is the main provider for her family; and her ‘romantic attachment’ to Gale has developed through his respect for stubborn and resilient nature rather that her looks or dependence upon
In the novel The Hunger Games, by Suzanne Collins a new country is created. Panem is born in place of North America, were the Hunger Games began. In the Hunger Games, there are 24 tributes. Tributes are people who live in the districts. The tributes in the Hunger Games are all the same. They kill one another and become the Capitols puppets. The tributes become violent, emotionless puppets. Then there is Katniss. Katniss is an excellent hunter and becomes lethal during the games. However, she has not lost her compassion. Katniss does not think of herself as a good person. When in reality she is a good person with a large heart, who puts others before herself.
“Happy Hunger Games! And may the odds be ever in your favor” (Collins 19). Those were some of the last words Katniss heard before her sister’s name was called out for the seventy-fourth Hunger Games. Without thinking about anyone else, Katniss bravely accepted her sister’s spot in the games, a basic suicide mission. Katniss Everdeen had a vibrant personality, she was bold, intelligent, and a loving person. Her country, Panem, was controlled by President Snow, who let his country suffer in poverty. The capital was harsh and forces every district to send one boy and one girl to take part in the yearly Hunger Games. While a Disney Princess would yell for her
Since she is the female victor from district 12, she is in the 74th Hunger Games. She sees how painful and scary it is and so she tries to stop the capital which is who is controlling everything. She doesn’t want that to happen to anyone else. She rebels against President Snow in plan of eventually killing him to take over the capital and change the world. Teens can relate to this because a lot of the time we feel controlled. It might be by a parent, teacher, grandparent or someone else but all of us are controlled by someone. A lot of teenagers end up rebelling because they feel as if they have no choices. They go against the rules of who they are rebelling against. That persons rules and values are not necessarily right. Who decides what is right? It seems as if we have entered into a state time where there is no right and wrong. Katniss breaks free of that control and does her own thing. Another way teens can relate to the hunger games is through the love triangle. Some of us might have a similar situation of where we might like two people. In the movie it says, “What I need is not Gales fire, kindled with rage and hatred. I have plenty of fire myself. What I need is the dandelion in the spring. The bright yellow that means rebirth instead of destruction. The promise that life can go on, no matter how bad our losses. That it can be good again. And only Peeta can
Her initial refusal to embark on an explicitly romantic relationship with neither Gale nor Peeta can be seen as a representation of her ultimate rejection of the heteronormative values which have been placed upon her by others (Henthorne, 2012). Katniss displays characteristics of a typically strong, independent heroine who needs only herself. This representation of her femininity outlines her feminine qualities as strengths, rather than weaknesses, within a patriarchal society. Katniss is deemed to be “too powerful” (Parsons, Sawars, & McInally, 2008, p. 371) by President Snow. During the course of the franchise, President Snow continually felt threatened by the degree of influence Katniss had in the districts and, fearing an uprising, threatened Katniss on multiple occasions and attempted to have both her and those she cared for killed.
The main character, Katniss, volunteers as tribute for her district to save her sister from having to be tribute. Upon arriving in the Capitol for the games, she sees just how vast the gap between the Capitol and districts are. To fight against this class struggle, she begins to revolt. At first this comes in the form of small things, like shooting an arrow at a pig feast of Capitol higher-ups and refusing to kill her friend in the games, resulting in the first ever co-victors of the Hunger Games. Katniss’ actions soon lead to full blown rebellion in the districts, starting a revolutionary war between them and the Capitol. At one point Katniss remarks: “My ongoing struggle against the Capitol, which has so often felt like a solitary journey, has not been undertaken alone. I have had thousands upon thousands of people from the districts at my side.” (Catching Fire 90). In true Marxist fashion the working class needed to use a violent revolution to confront the class struggle against the ruling
