The book The Hunger Games is full of critical scenes. A critical scene is a type of scene that is necessary for the book to have a story. One very important critical scene is when Prim was chosen at the reaping. When she was chosen Katniss decided to take her place as a tribute. Why did Katniss take her place? What could have happened if she didn't take her place?
The Hunger Games are basically the embodiment of society's off sense of entertainment. It combines the oddities that are violence and reality TV. However, what is it that insinuates the tones for this type of movie? Initially, there's a scene that addresses the fact that the society of this movie is conducting the games as though it was a standardized athletic tournament. In the movie, Haymitch Abernathy brings up how there are sponsors who deliver supplies to the “contestants”. Basically, sponsors influence the who will live or die, incidentally affecting the course of the games. The movie The Hunger Games (based on the novel by Suzanne Collins) and The Giver, a novel by Lois Lowry, both display governments that enforce strict rules in order to limit the freedom of their citizens. Both of these novels are centered on dystopian societies in which the government removes the freedom of choice and individuality in order to establish oppressive control over its citizens. Katniss and Jonas are the exception when it comes to the citizens of both “communities” and how they are overly controlled while being unaware of their loss of freedom. Both characters selflessly put themselves in danger in order to save their younger siblings, or adopted sibling in Jonas’s case, from the oppressive government. Katniss takes the place of her younger sister in the fight to the death, while Jonas takes responsibility of a young child by removing him from the corrupt and enclosed community in which they live. Both Katniss and Jonas challenge the oppressive rules in their communities by being brave and selfless.
The townspeople do the lottery because of tradition. Even though the lottery is hated, the lottery is still done because the townspeople do not know anything else. Both in The Hunger Games and “The Lottery,” there is much importance on tradition. In The Hunger Games, while everyone is gathering for The Reaping, no one seems to want to be there. The faces of those who are participating are nervous, serious, and even a little fearful.
In a not-too-distant, some 74 years, into the future the United States of America has collapsed, weakened by drought, fire, famine, and war, to be replaced by Panem, a country divided into the Capitol and 13 districts. Each year, two young representatives from each district are selected by lottery to participate in The Hunger Games; these children are referred to as tributes (Collins, 2008). The Games are meant to be viewed as entertainment, but every citizen knows their purpose, as brutal intimidation of the subjugated districts. The televised games are broadcasted throughout Panem as the 24 participants are forced to eradicate their competitors, literally, with all citizens required to watch. The main character throughout the series is a 16-year-old girl from District 12 named Katniss Everdeen.
Access to food draws a thin line between the privileged and the poor. In Suzanne Collins’ novel The Hunger Games, food has a massive impact on the different characters from the different locations. Katniss Everdeen, the protagonist, lives in the poorest district in Panem – District 12. Each different district has a specialty that they use to provide for the Capitol; District 12’s specialty is coal mining. Author Despail explains the districts in a way that makes it easier to understand by stating that “[e]ach outlying district in Panem forms an identity around not only the products the district is known for but also the ways in which its citizens cope with their lack of food” (70). In The Hunger Games, the inequality between the rich and the poor is the biggest theme presented in the book. Throughout the book, Katniss mentions that starvation is common in District 12, and she has often gone hunting illegally in the woods for food for her family. This is an example of how the rich and the poor are separated. Wealth is only centralized in the hands of the rich, while the poor are left to starve, leaving disparity. The best examples of the inequality between the rich and the poor is seen in the tessera system, and the way the tributes are selected for the games. The government’s role for the people is to challenge them like how contestants from “The Amazing Race” or “Fear Factor” are challenged. Government should be like a reality competition show filled with adventure and danger (Amazing Race, 2003) (Fear Factor, 2005). Just like the government in “The Hunger Games” (Collins, 2008). People should compete for rights and liberties. The competitions can be held under the government’s supervision. These competitions can involve multiple life daring tasks and only the ones that survive win. The losers or the ones not so fortunate die in the process, a true fight to the death. Government works from a federal standpoint and does not get involved in local affairs.
Perhaps you always made fun of how the camera work during the original Hunger Games would have been impossible. Well this film does too, making fun of how the camera work during the actual games was unrealistic by having camera men chase Kantmiss throughout the wilderness clumsily trying to point the camera at the action whilst also attempting to not trip over various obstacles. President Snow didn't avoid the never ending hail of stupid jokes either, he became the illustrious President Snowball who is basically the most horrible human ever. along with this the games are now based entirely around stopping “Stupid stuff” from happening again instead of the previous “stopping rebellion happening again”. Stupid stuff mainly refers to Lady Gaga becoming the president of the United States and various other stupid things happening due to strange viral videos etc. The Starving Games winner now not only gets to survive the games just like in the regular Hunger Games but the winner is now the proud owner of: A ham that expired in 1979, a partially eaten pickle and a discount coupon for subway that allows you to get one footlong sub for a one inch

In a dystopian novel or movie, there is a dystopian protagonist. A dystopian protagonist is someone who often feels trapped, struggles to escape, questions existing systems, believes or feels as if something is wrong in the place they live in, and then helps the audience realize the effects of dystopian worlds. These are both good examples because it takes us on a walk through the protagonist's life and only then do we see what dystopian really is.

Furthermore, The Hunger Games also shows us just what we as a species could become with the right to social influence and conditioning by an authoritarian force. The peoples of the Capitol and Districts have been taught and conditioned for decades to accept the Hunger Games, especially so in the case of the Capitol, where its citizens applaud and enjoy the Hunger Games, much like many Romans enjoyed the Colosseum in ancient times. It is a rather frightening, but realistic, look at what any of us could become with the right social influences and conditioning.
