In “Contagion and in “The Hot Zone” when confronted with an outbreak in the United States, technology both helped spread the virus and aid in its containment by connecting the world. Some brief ways it helped spread was the ease of going anywhere in the world by airplane within twenty four hours. A way that it helped contain the outbreak was the high level technology that we have and how we can stop the spread of a virus and make a vaccine against it. One of the ways that having such advanced technology did not help during a pandemic is from how easy it is to travel anywhere in the world. Another way is being able to work with a deadly virus and testing with it to make treatments against it by using advanced suits to protect us from the virus, as well as having advanced instruments to test with the virus or disease. This makes it easier to make vaccines and cures for certain diseases. An example of this from “The Hot Zone” is the diamond knife, this tool is able to cut a single cell in half to test with it. My final way of how our advanced technology has helped in stopping pandemics is how we are able to quarantine people that have or are suspected of having a certain virus or disease. They put these people usually in specifically designed rooms in order to stop them from spreading the disease to prevent a pandemic from happening. Another way that having advanced technology has not helped is from having public transportation and public buildings to go to. One example is a bus, anyone can ride a bus to anyplace that it is going, and with so many people on this bus it is a very easy way for a disease to spread. The Hot Zone by Richard Preston is a true story about an outbreak of the Ebola virus, just outside of Washington D.C. in the 1980’s. Early in the story, the author describes a series of several outbreaks that took place in Africa, in order to describe the true destruction of this very lethal virus. The first appearance of this virus happens in a cave in Kenya. The virus infects Charles Monet, and then he is later taken to a hospital where his bloody death is described in detail. Later on the nurses that treated him also become infected with the disease, starting an outbreak. There are many more outbreaks to come later in the story.

Those three transition periods are: 1) Early human settlements enabling enzootic infective species to enter the human population, 2) Early Eurasion civilizations swapped dominant infections by military and commercial contact, and lastly, 3) European expansionism over the past five centuries caused the spread of often lethal infectious diseases. They also state that we could be in the fourth transition, with climate change having a wide range of impacts on the occurrence of infectious diseases in human populations.
The movie Outbreak is a wonderful portrayal of how the Chain of Infection works in an epidemic and pandemic outbreak of a disease. The shows how quickly the disease gained power and was responsible for sickness and death in a small community. Pathogens that invade the body have 5 requirements for a successful invasion on their host whether it is a human or animal. I will further review how the movie successfully reflects the reservoir/host, portal of exit, mode of transmission, portal of entry and susceptible host to provide the perfect Outbreak of the disease. The same model still used today in science.
