The Homeless Problem in America
In Charles E. King’s “Homelessness in America”, he writes about the population of homeless people in America and the fact that children are part of the growing population of the homeless in America. Also, in “My Anger and Sadness Over Pesticides”, Cesar Chavez writes that pesticides have endangered the lives of farm workers and their families. In addition, in “The Gulf War is Still Being Fought”, Joelle Foshee writes that even though the gulf war has ended, a new war is still being fought and this new war is known as the “Gulf War Syndrome”. These are all injustices in America today. However, homelessness in America is the injustice I have chosen to address because the population of homeless people has grown higher due to insufficient help from the gove...
Statistically, over 670,000 Americans are homeless with a growing number. 48 million people go to bed hungry every night. Although we do provide shelters and opportunities in America, millions of people are homeless worldwide. Even on a more minor level there are still hundreds homeless within hometowns. Everyday we encounter the homeless whether by seeing them holding their personal signs at stoplights, confronts with beggars, or viewing them from afar under bridges. In her essay titled “On Compassion”, writer Barbara Ascher uses rhetorical techniques detailing some of her personal homeless experiences within the city life, Asher does effectively use logos, pathos,
The book The Adventures of Huckleberry Finn tell the tale of a young boy who embarks on an adventure, one that leads him to find himself. Throughout the novel Huck develops a sense of morality that was always there to begin with, but not nearly as developed as it is by the end of the novel. Through living on his own, independent of societal and peer pressures, Huck is able to identify his own morals in defining what is 'right ' or 'wrong '.

According to Streetwise of Street News Services (2010), the first reported instances of homelessness dates as far back as 1640, in some of the larger cities in the original 13 colonies. At this time, there were wars being fought between settlers and Native Americans, and people were left with no shelter in both sides (Street News Service, 2010). Later, the industrial revolution caused more homelessness, industrial accidents left many former hard-working families with a dead provider, or with severe disabilities, and then the economy entered a recession in the same time period (Street News Service, 2010). Wars always left a large number of veterans homeless. Later, in 1927, there was an astronomical flood along the Mississippi River, across multiple state, leaving about 1.3 million people without a home (Street News Service, 2010). Natural disasters such as Hurricane Katrina, the 1906 earthquake in San Francisco, the Asian tsunami in 2004, and the earthquake early this year in Japan are still a major cause of homelessness.
Then on the fifth day of its journey, Titanic was progressing across the Atlantic. Captain Edward Smith had plotted a new course upon hearing earlier reports of ice from other liners, there were many more communications that day of ice in Titanic's path. On that very night of Sunday 14 April 1912. The sea was calm, the sky dark and clear, and the temperature was getting colder by the minute. With conditions like this an ice berg is very hard to spot. Then, at 11.40pm the lookout rang the alarm and telephoned the bridge saying "Iceberg, right ahead.” It was already too late to avoid the iceberg and Titanic began to start sinking within less than 40 seconds later, a series of holes appeared on the hull. It also took 3 ho...
The Homeless in America I never imagined that I would be homeless. " Although I have read this statement over and over again, the facts behind it remain astonishing. The facts are that there are millions of homeless people in America today. Many of these people had no choice but to become homeless. Economic problems such as being laid off work, or the rise in the cost of housing, have led people to live on the streets.
On April 15, 1912, the RMS Titanic sank in the North Atlantic Ocean at 2:20 a.m. after striking an iceberg, with the loss of more than 1, 500 passengers and crew. Thomas Andrews knew the ship’s flaws when he designed her nevertheless, Captain Smith knew of the collision between the ship and the iceberg. However, left all faith in the “Unsinkable Titanic.”
I find the story of the RMS Titanic very intriguing. Most everybody knows when it happened or how it happened, but very few people get to know the stories of the people that were passengers on the ill-fated ship. I was very lucky with the resources that I got, because most of them had quotes from the survivors. When reading the quotes, I got chills. I could picture myself in that freezing water or seeing my best friend or brother for the last time. The sinking of the RMS Titanic was a very sad ending of what was supposed to be a fairy-tale, and we can only hope that nothing like this happens ever again.
The Titanic was built to be unsinkable, with 16 watertight compartments to help keep it afloat. Many people called the R.M.S. Titanic “unsinkable”, because of how large it was. To many the Titanic, being the biggest ship, also meant it was the best. Publishers Weekly; 3/19/2012, Vol. 259 Issue 12, p30-32, 3p. The ship was advertised as “unsinkable as reasonably possible,” because of it’s numerous safety features. These features included automatic watertight doors, watertight bulkheads and compartments throughout the ship, the most powerful marconi at sea and the Titanic was so large, that it was thought that anything large enough to damage it would be seen in time. They were wrong. Courier Mail, The (Brisbane). 04/03/2012, p38-38. 1.
Many people debate on weather homeless people should receive guidance or just be abandoned. Do homeless people deserve our service and to be supported, or are they just lazy individuals trying to take advantage of people? Homelessness is a growing dispute in cities. It has became an extensive problem for the community. Homelessness can not and should not be ignored. The number of homeless people in the United States is quickly growing. It seems like no one cares to help them. Even our heroes like police officers show no sympathy towards the homeless. “Homeless people appeared on the streets of Bucharest in 1990. Since then, their number and the problems created by this phenomenon have steadily increased in all major
I was asked by my parents, to pick the state Missouri, or the state Virginia to move to because they got a job offer to the same corporation, and was going to get paid the same amount of income roll in either state. After my research, I came up with the state that I think would fit my family and me best. If I had to choose between Missouri or Virginia, I would choose Virginia because of many reasons. Virginia has better education, jobs, and economy. Virginia also has better activities, attractions, and culture. Finally, Virginia has more historical events that impact lives each day on how our nation first got started. That is why, in my opinion, Virginia is a better place to live environmentally.
Without it, the foundation of a relationship crumbles and falls into pieces. Yet again, Torvald and Nora’s marriage is a prime example of this. Torvald did not support Nora’s decision to leave him. Instead, he wanted her to stay in the house and work to “save the remains, the fragments, [and] the appearance” of a happy family (Ibsen 717). Although Torvald wanted to “save face” in the eyes of the community, he did not actually want to fix the issue. He also did not want Nora anywhere near the children, for fear that they would take up her habits (Ibsen 717). Nora caught on to the fact that Torvald did not and continually would not support any of her decisions. She even confronted him saying that he “never understood [her]” (Ibsen 720). Support, or lack thereof, was another big issue that led to Torvald and Nora’s separation. This also proved that support is a key aspect in a relationship between
The story of the Titanic was told long before the ocean liner was even a thought. Fourteen years prior to the sinking of the Titanic, Morgan Robertson wrote a book called The Wreck of the Titan. In his book, a passenger ship called Titan set sail from England and was headed to New York loaded with first class passengers and luxurious items. The Titan hits an iceberg in the North Atlantic, causing the ship to sink and the passengers to panic. The lack of lifeboats and life jackets on the Titan lead to the loss of many lives. Morgan Robertson’s book would predict the fate of the great ocean liner, the Titanic, fourteen years after.
The Titanic was a massive ship that every man dreamed of the ‘unsinkable’ ship left people devastated, killed or injured. The Titanic ended tragically. “On April 10, 1912, the RMS Titanic set sail from Southampton, England, carrying 2,207 passengers en route to New York. Unfortunately, the ship never made it to its final destination” (Titanic
In conclusion, the Titanic’s sinking is among the many great and tragic accidents to occur at sea. Not only was it the biggest and most luxurious vessel at the time, it was also the most ill-fated cruise ship as it sailed its first and last voyage. Along with the sinking, more than half of its passengers would be buried at sea. This introduced a new idea that people began to understand even the greatest technology is not perfect, and there is no such thing as an “unsinkable ship.” Its rediscovery and production of the movie years later would reawaken the desire to know all that happened on “that fateful night”. The Titanic will continue to lure people for generations to come, since every generation is able to take something different from its tragedy.
