Adela Lovejoy Mr. Neltner Honors Literature and Composition 03.14.2024 Survival Essay “To live is to suffer, to survive, is to find some meaning in the suffering.” -Fredrich Nietzsche. To survive is to continue to live or exist, especially in spite of danger or hardship. Ian and Michael are survivors because throughout their lives, they lived through, or survived, all of the situations thrown at them. I believe that three of the most important traits a person needs in order to survive are adaptability, motivation, and sensibility. Adaptability is a good trait to have in general, but in situations in which survival is necessary, being able to adapt to your conditions calmly is going to help you out a lot. Sensibility is a huge factor in your survival, because if you are reckless/hopeless there is not a very good chance your conditions in which you are surviving will improve. In the article ‘How I Survived a Year in ‘The Hole’ Without Losing My Mind,’ by Michael J Nicholas, he says, “Stay out of frivolous conversations with other captives.discussions about government politics, street politics and prison policies only lead to arguments.” This excerpt from the text already shows us how Michael is very sensible, as he is showing how not to engage in fights and other unfortunate situations, which probably has the effect of the guards being more lenient towards him. Another passage in ‘How I Survived a Year in ‘The Hole’ Without Losing My Mind,’ by Michael J Nicholas goes, “Learn to observe but not respond to their (the guards) antagonism.don’t get mad and act out, you’ll get 30 more days in the hole.” I think that he is explaining that putting yourself above the criticism is an effective way of dealing with situations like those.
