John Ronald Reuel Tolkien is a well known poet and author. Tolkien was born in Bloemfontein, South Africa in the year of 1892. He started off his career teaching at Oxford University. While teaching he published his first novel ‘The Hobbit’. The Hobbit soon became one of the most popular and loved fantasy novels of all time along with his Lord Of The Rings trilogy. Most of his novels are based in a fictional world of ‘Middle Earth’. Tolkien has created his vast world with extreme detail, amazingly it has its own gods, timeline, people and languages. Tolkien’s fantasy novels are so overwhelmingly popular that they have their own movies. Tolkien and his family had settled into England as a child. Middle Earth is a fictional world in the imaginary legendarium created by J.R.R. Tolkien. Middle Earth is where most of Tolkien’s novels are set. Whilst creating the universe where Middle Earth is set, Tolkien added so much detail to his world that it even had multiple languages including dwarvish and elvish, the legendarium surprisingly also had gods and it’s own history; Middle Earth was created when Eru Ilúvatar, the supreme god was simply floating in the empty space of nothingness, consequently Eru Ilúvatar created angelic beings, the Ainur. The Ainur started to sing and produce music; ‘The Music of the Ainur’ which payed a massive part in the creation of the universe. After the universe has been created, the Ainur make beings themselves, the elves were crafted, then men, then dwarves. All of the creatures were then set upon on a magical world. Middle Earth, after numerous years, the first species had evolved into many smaller subspecies (e.g. Hobbits) and the elves, dwarves and men had roamed the entire world, from rocky mountains to ferocious oceans. This popular novel is all about an adventure taken on by a hobbit named ‘Bilbo Baggins’. It all started when one calm, peaceful day Bilbo was confronted by the infamous wizard, Gandalf the Grey accompanied by a bandit of 12 dwarves lead by Thorin II Oakenshield. They seek for Bilbo’s assistance in slaying the mighty dragon Smaug to reclaim their home, Erebor years ago. Bilbo reluctantly agrees to join the dwarves on the adventure. The wizard, dwarves and hobbit journey through the countryside, encountering evil orcs and visiting ancient elven cities whilst doing so. The group then meet up at Erebor, ready to slay the dragon. The beast is eventually dead but consequently, a village was destroyed in the process. After retaking back Erebor The Battle of the Five Armies occurs. The armies of Men, Elves, Dwarves and Eagles worked together to fight off the Orcs. The orcs are soon defeated but 3 of the main character dwarves; Fili, Kili and Thorin, were killed in the battle.
