“Something is the matter with you! You are not the hobbit that you were.” (Tolkien 300). How could this say to Bilbo from Gandalf changed his perspective of himself more than it already has? The book “The Hobbit” was written by J.R.R. Tolkien and was once called “There and Back Again”. This story is about a hobbit named Bilbo Baggins, who did not want much, just to be left alone in his cozy hobbit hole. He then shortly found himself on a fearsome and long journey with a wizard named Gandalf and thirteen dwarves to attempt to reclaim their stolen treasure from the great frightful dragon Smaug. “If they still doubted that he was really a first class burglar, in spite of Gandalf’s words, they doubted no longer.” (Tolkien 92). This scene changed everything for the dwarves because they then truly believed he was a real burglar and from then on they all had a brand new respect for Bilbo. As Bilbo told them stories about what had happened when he was gone the dwarves were all in shock and Bilbo seemed to be very pleased in their admiration of him. As he did not tell them about the invisibility ring, which made all the stories that much more fascinating and incredible. “The dwarves looked at him with quite a new respect, when he talked about dodging guards, jumping over Gollum, and squeezing through, as if it was not very difficult or very alarming.” (Tolkien 93). “Somehow the killing of a giant spider, all alone by himself in the dark without the help of a wizard or the dwarves or anyone else, made a great difference to Mr. Baggins. He felt a different person, and much fiercer and bolder in spite of an empty stomach as he wiped his sword on the grass and put it back into its sheath.” (Tolkien 155). The dwarves were also caught in spider webs with guarded giant spiders surrounding them. Clever Bilbo then threw stones distracting the spiders while he freed the dwarves, they then got away after Bilbo slew some more spiders. This scene demonstrated Bilbo's increase in boldness and confidence after not only freeing himself alone but along with the dwarves. He now felt much more powerful and confident in himself
