It is amazing to see how far we have come in such a little time in regards to medicine and science. Even in just the last 100 years so much has been discovered and learned. The human mind is a very complicated and fascinating thing, and then when mental abnormalities are thrown in, it becomes an amazing thing to study. There are so many mental illnesses and disorders out there now, and still more still to be discovered and diagnosed. The DSM-5 explains different clusters of personality disorders that have already been discovered and learned about. Cluster B in the DSM-5 lists ten personality disorders that include the histrionic, narcissistic, and borderline personality disorders. These disorders are considered the dramatic and erratic personality disorders and share problems with impulse control and emotional regulation (DSM-5: the 10 personality disorders: cluster b). In this paper we are going to be taking a closer look at the Histrionic and Narcissistic Personality Disorders. The Histrionic Personality Disorder is up first obviously because it is known as the “drama queen” disorder, with those diagnosed with it needing to be the center of attention in both good and bad ways. Not much research has been done on the history or causes of histrionic personality disorder, though there are several speculations about the causes. The well known “nurture vs nature” debate is brought up with regard to histrionic personality disorder. Apparently if parents have histrionic traits, those same traits are passed on to the children, whether through genes or simply by raising their children their way, unknowingly passing those traits on (out of the fog). Histrionic Personality Disorder is “characterized by a pattern of excessive emotiona... ... middle of paper ... ...l. Staying focused on the goal for the future is good for helping to repair damaged relationships and for achieving a happier life. Finally, learning relaxation and stress management techniques such as yoga or tai chi can be soothing and calming (mayoclinic). In conclusion, Histrionic Personality Disorder is more common in females, while Narcissistic Personality Disorder is more common in the male population. People with H.P.D. are considered the “drama queens” of the world, and people with N.P.D. are the arrogant bastards of the world. Different therapies are available for both personalities, however medication is found more in H.P.D. and hospitalization is found in N.P.D. Both personality disorders show decreased symptoms with age. And as with all mental illnesses and disorders, there will be an ongoing search to discover the causes and better treatment options.
Histrionic personality disorder, which is a part of cluster B of personality disorders, is classified by an extreme desire for attention. In order for a person to be diagnosed with it, they must exhibit at least 5 symptoms of it, which include awkward social encounters, shallow expression of emotions, talk in a way that lacks details, theatrical, and finds relationships more intimate that they actually are (Kupfer & Skodol 667). Personality disorders as a whole are characterized by lasting behaviors that inhibit normal social functioning (Myers 596). Histrionic personality disorder specifically however is the one where people need to get attention. They make all their relationships about themselves and look to have social events focus on them more than others. While it can seem that many people have it, especially since it is sometimes referred to as the “teenage girl syndrome”, it is only seen in about 1.84% of people (Kupfer & Skodol 668). This disorder is commonly treated through cognitive-behavioral therapy which aims to change peoples negative thoughts as well as behaviors. For people with histrionic personality disorder, understanding why they think the way they do as well as learning coping mechanisms can help their alter their behaviors that were formerly socially
In this paper I analyze a character’s mental disorder from the film Running With Scissors. This character is named Deirdre Burroughs. Deirdre suffers from narcissistic personality disorder. The paper touches on various symptoms that Deirdre displays because of her disorder. Also, I provide two ethological theories that I believe may have caused Deirdre to develop narcissistic personality disorder. I was able to find evidence from the Abnormal Psychology: An Integrative Approach to support my theories. I was also able to obtain further information from an article that discusses on the disorder. Lastly, this paper provides a negative message that the film has on narcissistic personality disorder.
Histrionic personality disorder is defined by someone who is excessively over dramatic, emotional, and theatrical. This person will often feel uncomfortable when not the center of other’s attention and at times act inappropriately seductive or provocative. Lastly, histrionic personality disorder is characterized by speech that is highly vague and dramatic, causing for emotions to be shallow and constantly changing (Histrionic personality disorder,

Every person that has different characteristics that influence how they think, act, and build relationships. While some people are introverted, others are extroverted. Some people are strict and do not take risks, while others are carefree and free spirited. However, there are times where a person’s behavior becomes destructive, problematic, and maladaptive (Widger, 2003). The key to examining a person for a possible personality disorder is not if they have quirks, but if they display severe behavioral, emotional, and social issues. Personality disorders have always been viewed as a possible category for a psychological disorder. However, in the new edition of the DSM, it will be getting its own diagnostic category. In viewing personality disorder, one can only agree that it should have its own diagnostic category. The reason that these changes are being supported is because of the causation, diagnosis, and treatment of personality disorders.
Classified as part of the Dramatic Personality Disorder, a Narcissistic Personality Disorder is based on the extremity of self-admiration. The origin of the specific personality disorder comes from the Greek root word “narcissism,” which is based on Greek mythology of Narcissus who was a man that fell in love with his own reflection in a pool of water. The cause of the illness is unknown, however professional mental health doctors believe the condition may be due to how a child was raised. When still in the adolescent years, excessive unconditional or an insufficient amount of love from the parents may be the cause of the disorder. Early signs of the mental illness can be spotted by adulthood. The majority of the people who are diagnosed with Narcissistic Personality Disorder show symptoms such as being conceited and garrulous by exaggerating achievements and goals that are unrealistic while ...

In 1980, BPD had finally been recorded in the third edition of the Diagnostic and Statistical Manual of Mental Disorders (Ogrodniczuk & Hernandez, 2010). Now in the fifth edition, the Diagnostic and Statistical Manual of Mental Disorders lists BPD among the fifteen types of personality disorders (5th ed.; DSM–5; American Psychiatric Association, 2013).
Narcissistic Personality Disorder is a mental disorder that is considered to be an impairment in personality functioning, the presence of pathological traits, lack of empathy for others and a need for admiration. This type of personality disorder has some related disorders such as antisocial behaviors, interpersonal exploitation and envy. According to Luo, Cai, & Song (2014), “Narcissism refers to a kind of abundant self-love, characterized by a series of characteristic including self-desire for admiration, fantasies of superiority, hypersensitivity to criticism, exploitation of people, and lack of empathy for others” (p. 1). There have been ongoing discussions on how this type of behavior is processed in the brain. It is not clearly known
Histrionic personality disorder (HPD) is a rarely diagnosed but thought to be one of the more common personality disorders. Individuals with this disorder are often excessively emotional and attention-seeking. They thrive on being the center of attention. “They commandeer the role of ‘life of the party’” (American Psychological Association, 2013, pg. 667). However, they tend to stay on the surface and lack much depth in their emotions and opinions and this can cause problems for them throughout their lives. It is important to understand the symptoms, etiology, course, prevalence, assessment and treatment of histrionic personality disorder before taking on a client, or working with this population.
In Jean Twenge’s novel titled, “Generation Me”, she describes “Generation Me” as a group of self-obsessed, overconfident, assertive, miserable individuals. “Gen-Me” cares about what other people think so much they 'll go to great lengths to “impress” their peers. Self-obsession can be viewed as a sickness of the mind. The average person may be oblivious to the fact that 1 out of 6 people are narcissists. “Narcissism falls along the axis of what psychologists call personality disorders, one of a group that includes antisocial, dependent, histrionic, avoidant and borderline personalities. But by most measures, narcissism is one of the worst, if only because the narcissists themselves are so clueless.” - Jefferey Kluger
We have all met a person who always has to be the center of attention and engages in inappropriate sexually seductive or provocative behavior. It may be obvious that something is “off” or not quite “normal” but many do not realize this behavior could be the result of a disorder known as Histrionic Personality Disorder (HPD). According to Paul Rasmussen of Furman University, “an individual with a histrionic orientation displays an active dependency characterized by a strong need for external validation in the form of interpersonal attention, support, and reassurance”. This paper will explore the causes, symptoms, diagnosis, treatment as well as risk factors of Histrionic Personality Disorder.
