The History of Computers
To those of us that have grown up during the computer age, computers seem like a normal part of our everyday lives. The idea that only a few decades ago computers were virtually unheard of is inconceivable. Computers are now so essential that they basically run our society and the whole of the modern world. They track hurricanes, forecast the weather, predict natural disasters, control satellites and missiles and keep countries around the world in constant contact. The technology that revolves around the computer industry is forever changing and growing, becoming more advanced and doing things that seem beyond anyone¦Ðs wildest dreams. The development of computers during the last few decades is astronomical and could be one of the fastest developing inventions ever created.
The dawn of the computer age can be traced back to the period of 1936 ¡Ù 1945, when the first computers were being built in several countries (Tomaselli vii). Although they came about as a result of the war, it is certainly safe to say they would have developed on their own in the business industry. Regardless, computer technology has grown by incredible leaps and bounds since the very beginning and as Barnes says, ¡Ýwe have been living amidst the fastest technological revolution of all time¡Ü (vii). Every couple of years something completely new and more advanced comes out and takes over the previous style of production and pretty much exterminate it as well. The technology is forever changing and constantly growing. There are so many technologies associated with the computer industry that it¦Ðs almost hard to keep track of. The technology that is most directly related to the greater society in this country at least is the personal computer, or the PC.
A personal computer can be defined as a computer built around a microprocessor for use by an individual, as in an office or at home or school. The PC, also known as the microcomputer, was developed from the semiconductor industry (Barnes 622). In 1968, Robert Noyce and Gordon Moore created Intel and started developing a photolithography method to put three components on a single chip (Barnes 622).
First, I believe that Gene and Finny were not sincerely friends throughout the novel due to their relationship being driven by competitiveness. Along with the competitive atmosphere came jealously, envy and enmity. Gene created a rivalry between him and Finny. Since Finny was
She keeps arguing with Peeta whether or not she is going to go or not. Katniss wants to go and Peeta is saying she is going to stay behind. Peeta says “No, you’re not risking your life for me.”(274). Then Katniss lies and says she’s not going but really she just gives him spoonfuls of a syrup which actually makes him sleep so Katniss can sneak out and grab the medicine. Once she grabs the medicine Clove is saying that Cato, is out there hunting for Peeta. Clove said “I don't think you'll have much use for your lips anymore, want to blow Lover Boy one last kiss?”(286). When she gets back to Peeta she gives him the medicine and when they wake up it is much better than what it was before. “Much better, whatever you shot into my arm did the trick.”(291). Said Peeta. Katniss showed great bravery and courage when she ran out into the middle trying to grab that pack filled with supplies including the medicine.
Gene does not feel any sympathy for Finny. “I did not cry then or ever about Finny” (Knowles 194). Gene is satisfied that he kills Finny and it allows him now to fight on the front and put Finny in his past. “A Separate Peace”,a scholarly journal, further supports this action made by Gene. “Gene realizes toward the conclusion of A Separate Peace” that wars were not made by generations and their special stupidities, but that wars were made instead by something ignorant in the human heart” (“A Separate Peace” Novels for Students 10). Gene is ignorant and has to pick a fight with Finny instead of becoming a friend. Gene does not care enough about Finny so instead this war that is created kills Finny and Gene does not care at all. By not caring he can now fight at the front and kill his enemies over there as
After talking to Finny on the phone, Gene said to himself “I lost part of myself to him then, and a soaring sense of freedom revealed that this must have been my purpose from the first: to become a part of Phineas” (85),. At this point, instead of discovering his own identity Gene decides to give his up for Finny's. Gene says he felt freedom becoming part of Finny, showing he is not content with himself so he wanted to be someone else, like Finny who he admires. Therefore, Gene didn't want to discover his own identity, making him unable to develop and the only way he could get his back, would be if Finny died... At Finny's funeral, Gene thought this to himself, “I could not escape a feeling that this was my own funeral, and you do not cry in that case” (194). Gene, at this moment feels as if Finny's funeral is his own, but now that Finny had died, the part of Finny that is apart of Gene had died. By this occurring, it means that Gene can finally discover his own identity and not Finny's identity, which he has been living without for most of the story. This shows that Gene has progressed since he has now claimed his old identity and learned from his mistakes, that he has to be himself, not someone
Gene helps Finny with his academic studies and continuing his dream when he returns to Devon. Gene, Brinker and the other guys help create the Winter Carnival to lift Finny’s spirits. When all is revealed to Finny about the truth of falling, the tension in the air soon resides as Gene realizes what he has done. Even though Finny is deeply hurt by the actions of his best friend he still forgives him for causing the fall. Gene, one would say by reading the book seems like he doesn’t want to except what he had one until the end of the
At the end, Gene soon realizes that he was the enemy all along. A Separate Peace states that “To keep silent about this amazing happening deepened this shock for me. It made Finny seem too unusual for—not friendship, but too unusual for rivalry. And there were few relationships among us at Devon not based on rivalry” (Knowles 63). Gene then knows that he is the enemy and impulse toward destruction – and believes he overcame the enemy after causing Phineas’ death. He separates from Phineas and develops his own identity and adulthood. Knowles states “I could not escape that this was my own funeral, and you do not cry in that case”
Everything was split apart by the Capitol into thirteen districts. But district thirteen was destroyed by the capitols because they didn't follow what the Capitol had wanted them to do. District twelve was the home of Katniss Everdeen. She was very troubled with the fact that every year the Capitol would have celebrate with a game. This game was where one girl and one boy would be chosen from each of the twelve districts, to fight until one winner was left standing. If you put your name into the jar that they draw the name out of more than you need to, then you would get a reward. Katniss did this every year so that way her family wouldn't starve. Her mom and her sister are the only thing she has, but sadly her sister was drawn for the games, but Katniss wouldn't allow it. She volunteered for her little sister instead. So therefore she would have to fight her way to survive. If she wins. Then she will be safe from the drawing for ever. Her mentor Haymitch and the other fighter Peta make their way up to the Capitol. They both have to present their skills in from of the Capitol. Katniss's skill is shooting the bow and arrow. Her first shot she misses, so they lose interest in what she is doing, so she shoots and apple right of one of the capitols game maker's hands. Each person was evaluated and scored. The higher you scored the better. She had the highest score out of every other person that went thought the trial. Haymitch and her think this is strange, because she could have killed him. Soon they would all have to enter the games, and try to survive. Haymitch thinks that she should try to just run instead of going for the bow, so that way she wouldn't get killed right away. So once the game started, she did what he said. She ran for awhile seeing people being killed left and right. But she had managed to survive for that moment. After a couple of days the game makers see that she is doing very well, so they
The departure occurs when Katniss is forced to leave all she knows behind by traveling to the capital. While she
People have been in awe of computers since they were first invented. At first scientist said that computers would only be for government usage only. “Then when the scientists saw the potential computers had, scientist then predicted that by 1990 computers may one day invade the home of just about ever citizen in the world” (“History” Internet), the scientists were slightly wrong, because by 1990 computers were just beginning to catch on. Then a few years later when scientists when to major corporations to get help with a special project, the corporations said no, because computers would just be a fad and they wouldn’t make much money off of it. “By definition Abacus is the first computer (the proper definition of a computer is one who or that which computes) ever invented” (Internet).
If nineteenth century was an era of the Industrial revolution in Europe, I would say that computer and Information Technology have domineered since the twentieth century. The world today is a void without computers, be it healthcare, commerce or any other field, the industry won’t thrive without Information Technology and Computer Science. This ever-growing field of technology has aroused interest in me since my childhood.
We have the microprocessor to thank for all of our consumer electronic devices, because without them, our devices would be much larger. Microprocessors are the feat of generations of research and development. Microprocessors were invented in 1972 by Intel Corporation and have made it so that computers could shrink to the sizes we know today. Before, computers took a room because the transistors or vacuum tubes were individual components. Microprocessors unified the technology on one chip while reducing the costs. Microprocessor technology has been the most important revolution in the computer industry in the past forty years, as microprocessors have allowed our consumer electronics to exist.
Another example of the change in our technology over the last century is the change in the computer. In 1946, the first electronic computer called the ENIAC took up the space of a large room. Instead of using transistors and IC chips, the ENIAC used vacuum tubes. Compared to many computers now, the ENIAC is about as powerful as a small calculator. That may not be much, but it is a milestone because there would not be computers today if it were not for the ENIAC. As the years passed, the computer became smaller and more powerful. Today, more than half of the American population has a computer in their home. The personal computers today are thousands of times more powerful than the most powerful computers fifty years ago.
The history of the computer dates back all the way to the prehistoric times. The first step towards the development of the computer, the abacus, was developed in Babylonia in 500 B.C. and functioned as a simple counting tool. It was not until thousands of years later that the first calculator was produced. In 1623, the first mechanical calculator was invented by Wilhelm Schikard, the “Calculating Clock,” as it was often referred to as, “performed it’s operations by wheels, which worked similar to a car’s odometer” (Evolution, 1). Still, there had not yet been anything invented that could even be characterized as a computer. Finally, in 1625 the slide rule was created becoming “the first analog computer of the modern ages” (Evolution, 1). One of the biggest breakthroughs came from by Blaise Pascal in 1642, who invented a mechanical calculator whose main function was adding and subtracting numbers. Years later, Gottfried Leibnez improved Pascal’s model by allowing it to also perform such operations as multiplying, dividing, taking the square root.
The computer evolution has been an amazing one. There have been astonishing achievements in the computer industry, which dates back almost 2000 years. The earliest existence of the computer dates back to the first century, but the electronic computer has only been around for over a half-century. Throughout the last 40 years computers have changed drastically. They have greatly impacted the American lifestyle. A computer can be found in nearly every business and one out of every two households (Hall, 156). Our Society relies critically on computers for almost all of their daily operations and processes. Only once in a lifetime will a new invention like the computer come about.
CPU Stands for "Central Processing Unit." The CPU is the primary component of a computer that processes instructions. It runs the operating system and applications, constantly receiving input from the user or active software
