Hydrogen gas was first identified as an element in 1766, by British scientist Henry Cavendish, in an experiment wherein he separated hydrogen gas by reacting zinc metal plates with hydrochloric acid. Cavendish found that when he applied a spark to the resulting hydrogen gas, it yielded water. It wasn’t until some years later that French chemist Antoine Lavoisier gave hydrogen its modern name. The word hydrogen is derived from the Greek words ‘hydro’ and ‘genes’, which translate as ‘born of water.’ In 1800, two English scientists, William Nicholson and Sir Anthony Carlisle, discovered electrolysis. They found that by applying an electric current to water, the resulting reaction produced both oxygen and hydrogen gases. This discovery eventually gave birth to the concept of the fuel cell. In essence, a fuel cell is no more complex than performing electrolysis in reverse. In 1839, a Swiss chemist, by the name of Christian Schoenbein, performed the first fuel cell experiment wherein he combined oxygen and hydrogen to produce water and a small electric current. Only six short years later, in 1845, Sir William Grove utilized Schoenbein’s discovery to create the very first functioning hydrogen gas battery. It is for this reason that Grove is known as the ‘Father of the Fuel Cell.’ Both a physicist and inventor, Sir William Grove, developed the concept of generating electrical power by means of introducing oxygen and hydrogen in the presence of an electrolyte almost 170 years ago. He conceived the first hydrogen fuel cell in 1839 and developed a working prototype. In addition to steam reforming, another natural gas-hydrogen process called partial oxidation produces hydrogen by burning methane in the presence of air. Both methods produce a synthesis gas, which is then reacted with additional steam to produce a higher yield, higher hydrogen content gas stream.
Electrolysis is another well-known production method for obtaining hydrogen gas. An electric current is used to split water into hydrogen and oxygen atoms. While effective, the process requires a significant amount of energy in the form of electricity. The electricity required can be generated using a number of methods. However, to minimize greenhouse gas emissions, electricity generation using renewable energy technologies is preferred. Those include wind, solar, geothermal, and hydroelectric generation methods.
To test this theory Chemist Stanley Miller and Physicist Harold Urey did a famous experiment in 1950. Mixing Methane, Ammonia, Water, and Hydrogen. Then the sparked the mixture to signify lightning. The result was amino acids.
Development of the Hydrogen Bomb In the world, there is little thing called power. Many countries want to have great power, few get it. Hydrogen lies in one of the copious replacements for gasoline. It is not an energy source such as oil, but an energy carrier that is produced instead of digging and finding it underground. Though replacing fossil fuels by hydrogen fuel cell is very hard and costs a great deal, for the most part, hydrogen fuel cell is a zero carbon emission fuel which highly reduces the carbon emissions that causes pandemic global warming. In the article “History of Fuel Cells” the author declares, “It was not until 1959 that Bacon and company first demonstrated a practical five-kilowatt fuel cell system.” In the late 1950’s NASA began experimenting with fuel cells by using them for compact electricity generators. Fuel cells have now supplied electricity for many space missions. In the article “History of Fuel Cells” the author states, “In more recent decades, a number of manufacturers - including major auto makers - and various federal agencies have supported ongoing research into the development of fuel cell technology for use in fuel cell vehicles (FCV) and other applications. Fuel cell energy is now expected to replace traditional power sources in coming years - from micro fuel cells to be used in cell phones to high-powered fuel cells for stock car racing.”
Hydro power is one of many examples of alternative energy sources. Hydro power produces energy by moving water. Wind power is another form of solar power. Wind isn’t only a clean fuel source, but it is one of the most inexpensive alternative sources of energy.

Since the beginning of the Industrial Revolution fossil fuels and oil have been our main sources of energy, and until recently that has been acceptable. After the oil crisis in the 1970’s, people began to grow concerned about the future state of our energy supplies. That culminating concern combined with the new concern of human initiated alteration of the atmospheric composition, encouraged scientists to try and come up with a new source of clean fuel that produced no emissions. Thermochemical Water Splitting was first conceptualized in the mid 1960’s1. At the time is wasn’t necessary because oil was so cheap there was no need for an alternative, so it faded away. The hunt for clean energy source led to a revitalization of the thermochemical water splitting system. A system that if fully developed, could efficiently produce hydrogen and oxygen fuel without the harmful emissions of gasoline and coal2.
Henry Cavendish was born October 10, 1731 in Nice, France. His mother, Lady Anne Grey was the daughter of the first Duke of Kent while his father Lord Charles Cavendish, was second Duke of Devonshire. His ancestry links back to many of the aristocratic families in Great Britain. The chemist/physicist is most accredited for the discovery of hydrogen, the “inflammable air” and measuring the Earth’s density, but he also researched and discovered many other important scientific revolutions.
The process need toluene and hydrogen as a main reactor. Then, toluene and hydrogen are converted in a reactor packed with catalyst to produce benzene and methane. This reaction is exothermic and the operating conditions are 500 0C to 660 0C, and 20 to 60 bar of pressure. This process begins with mixing fresh toluene with a stream of recycle unreacted toluene, and the mixing is achieved in a storage tank. Then, the toluene is pumped to combine it with a stream of mixed hydrogen and fresh hydrogen gas. The mixture of toluene and hydrogen is preheated before it is introduce to the heater or furnace. In the furnace, the stream is heated to 600 0C, then introduced into the reactor. Basically, the main reactions occurs in the reactor.
