Autism has grown intensely since the 1900’s as we saw above. Yet people still do not know what autism is today. AutismSpeaks.org defines autism as: Autism spectrum disorder (ASD) and autism are both general terms for a group of complex disorders of brain development. These disorders are characterized, in varying degrees, by difficulties in social interaction, verbal and nonverbal communication and repetitive behaviors. Autism is a disability that the majority of people do not know much about because it used to be so uncommon. Now, many people look at someone with a disability and see him or her as different, stupid, “retarded”, unaware, or not normal, which is not the case at all. Autism has never been looked at the way it should. It has been a disability, that over the past centuries only happened every once in a while. That has changed. This essay will explore the world of autism going back to the history of where it all began to now. Especially looking at the diagnosis and symptoms of autism and Autism Spectrum Disorder. This essay will explain why it is increasing so rapidly in this generation and what we can do to be more aware of autism. We have been aware of autism since the early 1900’s. Autism was very rare until the mid-1960’s. According to the article History of Autism by the website WebMD, “The word ‘autism,’ which has been in use for about one hundred years, comes from the Greek word ‘autos,’ meaning ‘self.’ The term describes conditions in which a person is removed from social interaction -- hence, an isolated self.” Eugen Bleuler was the first to use this word in 1911, when he referred to a group of schizophrenias. Ways to reduce a child’s risk of developing autism are to: have regular checks up, exercise regularly, maintain a healthy diet, do not take drugs or drink alcohol while pregnant, and plan birth before the age of forty (WebMD). All the precautions should be taken to help reduce the 10% chance of having a child with a developmental disorder. To become more aware of autism, there are many ways to get involved. Any physician will be more than welcome to answer questions, as well as the Internet. The Internet is a great way to start looking at information on autism. There are many educated people around you that are aware of autism. As we know, the awareness of autism has inclined tremendously, making more people aware of the symptoms and diagnosis. With the awareness growing, we can find more treatment to help this disorder stop increasing.
