In the article “Foster kids do equally well when adopted by gay, lesbian or heterosexual parents” by Stuart Wolpert, high risk children from foster care are taken care of really well by parents or couples regardless of gender and sexual orientation. In Los Angeles County, 82 high risk children were adopted by lesbian, gay and straight parents and went through cognitive assessment. The children’s IQ levels raised by ten points and behavior remained stable. The children from birth had faced neglect, prenatal substances, and premature births, but their social development skills were stable after adoption. Transgender is an umbrella term, meaning an individual’s gender-identity does not align with their assigned sex at birth. Although transgender is a protected class in eighteen states, these individuals still face discrimination within the country and around the world (“Non-Discrimination Laws”). Transgender is not a lifestyle, no one chooses to live their life constantly being discriminated against. Transgender issues should be more educated on and their lives should be more protected.
“The federal government and almost every state recognize transgender people’s right to change their name and to have identification documents with the gender marker that matches their gender identity.” (Jami Kathleen Taylor, 2007) There are a lot of misconceptions on what the meaning of transgender is, some think that they only become the person whether it is male to female, or female to male after surgery. What people fail to realize is that every transgender person transitions in their own way.
The author describes Hijras, which are an alternative gender, neither men or women. In todays US society I do not think that there is a “alternative gender”, but the most relatable gender that I would consider to be more similar to Hijras are those whom are transgender. Which is a person whose self-identity does not conform unambiguously to a conventional male or female gender. Reason being is that those whom are Hijra are raised as man and then undergoes genital removal, which is similar to what some transgender individuals go through. Therefore, similarities between the third gender, other than I do not see any similarities. Due to the fact that a majority of those whom cohabit the US are so fixed upon the fact that you are either male or female and there are no in between. The book “Neither Man nor Women” is an ethnography about the Hijras of India published in 1990. Serena Nanda, author of the book, is a professor of Anthropology in City University of New York. When beginning her fieldwork in the study of the Hijras, she only had brief information about the Hijras since there was not much written about them before. Nanda knew she would encounter conflict in communicating with the Indian community and that she would need translators. In the city she settled in, Bastipore, which is located in south central India, there were three spoken languages. She states in the introduction that the translation process was “time consuming, but [she] felt it was necessary to make sure that [she] had correctly understood the subtleties and complexities in such conversations and to increase the reliability of [her] data” (xix). I can understand why it was so imperative to have a translator, especially because she wanted to provide readers with valid information of such unique group of people. Her organization of the book contained chapters with different informative topics about the Hijras. A few of the different sections consisted of: defining Hijras, an overview of the roles they played in society, description of their rituals and spirituality, the operation process, work, personal interviews of individual Hijras. The way she selected to organize the book is acceptable and easy to follow through. As a result of Nanda’s fieldwork, she was able to accumulate comprehension of the Hijras of India and give readers a glimpse of their lifestyle in great detail.
In recent years, gay and lesbian parenting has been a discussion of huge debate across the nation. It’s a subject with such heated conversation like that of, politics. This has also been in the interest of many studies, about how it effects a child raised by that of a two males or two females. Among other debates that involve gay and lesbian couples such as, gay marriage or gay rights. These rights have often been taken for granted by many of Americans, but while gay and lesbians are denied most of these rights. The three biggest factors that are talk about in the parenting of children by gay and lesbian parents is that of; A child needs both a mother and a father to be properly raised, a family is a male, female, and children and last and one of the most talked about is the negative effects it has on the child as they grow up and face the world with two openly homosexual parents; a “mom” and “dad. While I believe that every gay and lesbian person should be able to raise a family, just as any other person; I do have a fear for the child’s well-being, simply because of the society we live in today and the crude criticism they may face.
In recent years, same-sex relationships have become more encompassing in US society. State legislation is changing such as accepting gay marriages, enforcing anti-discrimination laws, and legal gay adoptions; the lesbian, gay, bisexual, and transgender community is becoming public. Gay-headed families, like heterosexuals, are diverse and varying in different forms. Whether a created family is from previous heterosexual relationships, artificial insemination, or adoption, it deserves the same legal rights heterosexual families enjoy. Full adoption rights needs to be legalized in all states to provide a stable family life for children because sexual orientation does not determine parenting skills, children placed with homosexual parents have better well-being than those in foster care, and there are thousands of children waiting for good homes.
When an individual identifies themselves as transgender, it means that they feel that their biological gender does not match with their psychological gender. To put that into a simple man’s term, the individual feels they “were born in the wrong body”. For example, a man feels that he was meant to be born a woman and vise-versa. It does sound rather unusual, but why should that matter? An individual should be able to make his or her own decisions about how they live their life. Unfortunately though, not everyone feels the same way about this. That is how the controversy is created. This is why transgender rights should be strengthened in America not only because it is morally correct, but also because it would ease the lives of the people within this group, reduce the discrimination and harassment rates of transgender individuals, and help establish awareness.

Homosexuality is becoming more and more accepted and integrated into today’s society, however, when it comes to homosexuals establishing families, a problem is posed. In most states, homosexuals can adopt children like any other married or single adult. There are many arguments to this controversial topic; some people believe that it should be legal nationally, while others would prefer that is was banned everywhere, or at least in their individual states. There are logical reasons to allow gays to adopt children, but for some, these reasons are not enough. The main issue really is, what is in the best interest of the child? This type of problem isn’t really one with causes, effects, and solutions, but one with pros and cons.
