The hero’s quest cycle is a universally used trope which involves a Hero embarking on a quest to protect their kingdom/city or town. This trope is present in many different pieces of media, from old myths and legends to newer movies and books. Such as the Hunger Games, Harry Potter, the Matrix and Everything, Everywhere, All at Once. The hero’s journey consists of many parts, but the three most important ones are the hero’s refusal to the call of adventure, the hero facing many thresholds to complete their quest, and the reward they receive after overcoming the hardships of their journey. Therefore, showing that Evelyn’s character development is influenced by the hero’s quest cycle. At the beginning of Evelyn’s story, the audience sees her refuse the call to adventure, which is normal for any character who goes through the hero’s quest cycle. Evelyn’s call to adventure comes when her mentor, Alpha-Wymond, gives her the opportunity to choose her fate. He gives her the choice of either walking into the janitor’s closet and experiencing the truth, or she stays where she is and files her taxes, living her typical life. Evelyn fails which shows that she is not yet ready to change her ways to become a hero, which is typical for a hero passing through the first threshold. Evelyn’s first challenge to become a hero is that she must learn to jump. To verse jump, Evelyn must complete weird tasks to allow openings into other universes, in which she can steal skills and powers from other Evelyns. For her first-time verse jump, Evelyn must tell Dreidel, a person she hates, that she loves her. Evelyn then fails to communicate to Dreidel, the shadow character, that she is loved. Which causes Alpha Wymond to leave, thinking that she is not the one. The scene shows the audience that Evelyn is unable to easily forgive someone due to her pride and stubbornness. This causes her to fail the threshold, since to verse jump you must be able to adapt quickly to the weirdest situations. Even if it means you must sacrifice your pride. This situation is quite like how in King Arthur’s myth, his wife Guinevere leaves Arthur because he thought too highly of himself. So much, to the point where Arthur thought he could just have any woman as his wife without consequence. These scenes demonstrate how both main characters in their stories still have to work on themselves if they want to achieve success in their journeys, which is normal in this stage of the hero’s quest.
