What is a hero? In Joseph Campbell’s book, The Hero with a Thousand Faces, he proposes a theory about someone who goes through a series of events typically experienced by a mythic hero. These events are known as the Hero’s Journey. Cheryl Strayed’s journey on the PCT can be closely related to that of the Hero’s Journey. As strayed sets out on the PCT, she unknowingly is following these steps and is on her way to a new life. It’s no doubt that the tragedies and misfortunes Strayed has endured influenced her decision to go on her journey. Beginning in her teenage years, she has faced many family and relationship issues. She has gone through her parent’s divorce, living without electricity or running water, separation from her siblings, and divorce. …show more content…
Strayed began to lose hope. As she seeks for self-discovery and a resolution for her grief, she embarks on a journey otherwise known as the Hero’s Journey. In order for her journey to begin, Strayed must be pulled away from her ordinary world. Strayed enters her local store to pick up one thing, yet came home with another. She did not intend on leaving with a ton of materials needed to go on a three month hike. She had never seen or heard of any of these items before. Her sudden urge to explore was her call to adventure. “It seemed like years ago now----as I stood barefoot on that mountain in California---in a different lifetime, really, when I’d made the arguably unreasonable decision to take a long walk alone on the PCT in order to save myself (Strayed 5)”. Strayed knew her decision was irrational but she accepted the call anyways. She saw this as an opportunity to clear her mind and see what was actually happening right in from of her. She also came to the realization of how unprepared she was; not only physically, but mentally and emotionally as well. Strayed was devastated at the age of 22 when her mother, Barbara Anne, died. Her mother was like the glue holding her already broken family together. Her step-father disengaged and her two siblings became distant soon thereafter. Not having a family to run to, Strayed became involved with heroin use. She began to use sex as a way of covering up her feelings. There was no other way she could gain that sense of control. Her life began to head downhill and spiraled out of control. The Hero’s Journey states “The [heroes] progress through a series of tests, a set of obstacles that make them stronger, preparing them for their final showdown”.
Trials and tribulations can make or break a person. As Strayed sets out alone, she realizes how troublesome it really is to hike to Pacific Coast Trail. Her inexperience not only made the hike miserable, but it left her questioning herself. Strayed was skeptical and this quote showed that, “There, I’d leave my troubles behind, I thought. Instead, I only found more (37)”. From the two sizes too small boots, encountering dangerous animals, and coming close to dying of dehydration, Strayed had not seen a good day. Towards the beginning of the book, her feet began to ache so she decided to take of one boot. Mistakenly kicking it off the side of the mountain, she was left with one shoe. It can be said that Strayed is the boot and her life is represented by her kicking the boot. She has plunged into a world of the unknown. She does not know where she will end up or see on the way down. To make it through, Strayed used the sole of her shoe to create a shoe for the opposite foot to prevent herself from forming horrendous blisters that would make her incapable of …show more content…
walking. After walking all summer long, Strayed had finally reached the end.
It felt as if she finally accomplished something in her life. She did not know where this road would take her; she simply used walking as a coping mechanism. ”There’s no way to know what makes one thing happen and not the other. What leads to what. What destroys what. What causes what to flourish or die or take another course (304)”. This quote simply gives life to the fact that you cannot control everything that happens. Strayed has come to the realization of how much Eddie has helped her throughout her journey. He was the one who taught her how to build a fire, paddle a canoe, and skip rocks on the lake. A new life was created and for that Strayed is forever grateful to the PCT. It gave her a chance for a new beginning and to start fresh. The outcome of this journey was a remarkable one. The new world the hero is forced into is much different than the old one. Campbell describes this new world as a “fateful region of both treasure and danger…a distant land, a forest, a kingdom underground, beneath the waves, or above the sky, a secret island, lofty mountaintop, or profound dream state…a place of strangely fluid and polymorphous beings, unimaginable torments, superhuman deeds, and impossible
delight”. In conclusion, Cheryl Strayed was the hero of her journey. Her life was in turmoil and she had no choice but to save herself. She risked her life and found a sense of fulfillment. The trials she faced were meant to break her down but she endeavored. Each one played a specific role and shaped her life in a certain way. Throughout the entire experience, Strayed was determined to make it to the end. Even when she was at her lowest point, she never gave up. She wanted to prove she could survive. At that moment where she reached the end of the trail, it was like a breath of fresh air. She had found her happy place. Every time I set foot on the trail it feels like going home (Strayed)”.
What if all of a sudden your life changed and the next thing you know you find out you have magic in you. What would you do? who would you trust? This is what happens to a fourteen year old boy named Zachary Harriman in Hero by Mike lupica. Hero by Mike lupica is full of twists and turns and is a really good book. It all starts when Zach’s dad dies in a mysterious plane crash. Zach begins to investigate about his dad’s mysterious death because even though the police have concluded it was an accident he thinks otherwise. Throughout this book Zach learns a lot and overcomes and fails some challenges but is stronger in the end. Hero by Mike lupica is a really great book because of three things
In her story, “Greenleaf”, the author Flannery O’Conner shows us that people can sometimes blind their factual vision of the world through a mask of dreams, so that they would not be able to make a distinction between reality and their dreams of reality. O’Conner unveils this through the use of point of view , character, irony, and
The word "hero" is so often used to describe people who overcome great difficulties and rise to the challenge that is set before them without even considering the overwhelming odds they are up against. In our culture, heroes are glorified in literature and in the media in various shapes and forms. However, I believe that many of the greatest heroes in our society never receive the credit that they deserve, much less fame or publicity. I believe that a hero is simply someone who stands up for what he/she believes in. A person does not have to rush into a burning building and save someone's life to be a hero. Someone who is a true friend can be a hero. A hero is someone who makes a difference in the lives of others simply by his/her presence. In Tim O'Brien's novel, The Things They Carried, the true heroes stand out in my mind as those who were true friends and fought for what they believed in. These men and women faced the atrocities of war on a daily basis, as explained by critic David R. Jarraway's essay, "'Excremental Assault' in Tim O'Brien: Trauma and Recovery in Vietnam War Literature" and by Vietnam Veteran Jim Carter. Yet these characters became heroes not by going to drastic measures to do something that would draw attention to themselves, but by being true to their own beliefs and by making a difference to the people around them.
In the poem “The One Girl at the Boys’ Party,” Sharon Olds uses imagery to convey pride in her daughter’s growing femininity. What would seem to be another childhood pool party for the girl turns into an event that marks a rite of passage to adulthood. Though the narrator is reluctant of her daughter’s search for an identity, she ultimately sees her daughter’s transformation to womanhood as admirable. Olds’ pride is first shown when the girl begins to lose her innocence from the unfamiliar surroundings of masculine men. The narrator says, “They will strip to their suits, her body hard and indivisible as a prime number” (5-6). The girl’s stiff and confident stature that this image conveys suggests that she is anxious yet willing to progress
Country music singer, Reba McIntire, recorded a song called "The Greatest Man I Never Knew." In the song, she speaks of how she never really knew her father. It exemplifies the way I feel about my own father. Everyone has a person who has made a deep impact on his or her life. For me, it was my father Donald Alexander. He was a great man with a wonderful sense of humor. He was the reason I wanted to become an attorney. He said I never lost an argument. I feel tormented that I was unable to know what a great person he really was.
Even though, a person likes to think they are in control, life will show them they are in less control than thought they were. In Flannery O’Connor’s “Good Country People,” the character Hulga is a person that wants to maintain control in every aspect of her life good or bad. To Hulga it seems she is in constant control of her surroundings and her life. However, she does not have control that she thinks has.
The main character of this book is Susan Caraway, but everyone knows her as Stargirl. Stargirl is about 16 years old. She is in 10th grade. Her hair is the color of sand and falls to her shoulders. A “sprinkle” of freckles crosses her nose. Mostly, she looked like a hundred other girls in school, except for two things. She didn’t wear makeup and her eyes were bigger than anyone else’s in the school. Also, she wore outrageous clothes. Normal for her was a long floor-brushing pioneer dress or skirt. Stargirl is definitely different. She’s a fun loving, free-spirited girl who no one had ever met before. She was the friendliest person in school. She loves all people, even people who don’t play for her school’s team. She doesn’t care what others think about her clothes or how she acts. The lesson that Stargirl learned was that you can’t change who you are. If you change for someone else, you will only make yourself miserable. She also learned that the people who really care about you will like you for who you are. The people who truly love you won’t ask you to change who you are.
The book I chose to read was “Smile for the Camera” by Kelle James, Copyrighted in 2010. It starts off with chapter one. Kelle, the main character, is lying in bed when her dad walks in. he has a gun in his hand and hes crying, not a good combination according to her. Kelle pretends to be asleep. She decides she needs to leave home. That’s where chapter two begins. She climbs onto the enormous Greyhound bus with her suitcase in hand. She waves goodbye to her father but he only nods. Kelle’s father never really liked her. In fact he hated her. As the bus pulls away, her father waves to her. Kelle was on her way to New York City.
or it could be that she feels that the lord is only after one thing.
What is a hero? Many people think instantly about, police officers, fire fighters, or perhaps a person that saves the day such as “Batman” or “superman”, but in reality a hero are not just people that save the day or other from harm. A hero can also be your parent, or parents that are there for you through your good and bad or even right and wrong days; or your brother or sister that perhaps worry about you and is determine to teach you well, this way you do not commit the same mistake they once did or saw growing up. The novel “In the time of the butterflies” the three sisters are known to be hero’s for standing up and sticking to their beliefs. But a hero is not only those that die for their country or others, it takes a
Imagine it – all the rules you were raised to follow, all the beliefs and norms, everything conventional, shattered. Now imagine It – Clara Bow, the It Girl. The epitome of the avant-garde woman, the archetype of the flapper, was America’s new, young movie actress of the 1920’s. Modern women of the day took heed to Bow’s fresh style and, in turn, yielded danger to the conventional America. Yet Bow’s contagious and popular attitude came with its weaknesses - dealing with fame and the motion picture industry in the 1920’s. Despite this ultimate downfall, Clara’s flair reformed the youth and motion pictures of her time.
Straying away from life as a whole only to be alone, some may say is the strong way to heal themselves when dealing with extreme grief or a major crisis . In the book Wild, twenty-two year old Cheryl Strayed thought she had lost it all. Dealing with the loss of her mother, her family torn to pieces, and her very own marriage was being destroyed right before her very eyes. Living life with nothing more to lose, lifeless, she made the most life changing decision of her life. Strayed never seems remorseful on her decisions to up and leave everything behind while deciding to flee from it all. This being her way of dealing with life, it shows her as being strong; a woman of great strength and character. She shows personal strength, which is more than just a physical word. It is a word of very high value and can only be defined by searching deep within your very own soul.
The story, “Good Country People,” by Flannery O’Connor, is a third person limited narration which means the reader can only look into the mind of only a few of the characters. Those characters are Mrs. Hopewell and Hulga, or Joy. Schmoop discusses a deeper understanding about the narrator of the story.

The novel, Alone Together: Why We Expect More From Technology and Less From Each Other (2011) written by Sherry Turkle, presents many controversial views, and demonstrating numerous examples of how technology is replacing complex pieces and relationships in our life. The book is slightly divided into two parts with the first focused on social robots and their relationships with people. The second half is much different, focusing on the online world and it’s presence in society. Overall, Turkle makes many personally agreeable and disagreeable points in the book that bring it together as a whole.
