During the 1920s, the United States was in an economic boom. Many people gained from this boom. They were buying new gadgets such as refrigerators and radios for their homes using credit. This economic boom also brought many advantages to African Americans. They were once kept as slaves and viewed negatively in society, now they were contributing to their society. They helped provide entertainment to people in more ways than one. However, not all people were as happy as most. The Great Depression and the Great Migration occurred during this time and both caused hard times across the nation. The Harlem Renaissance, which occurred in the late 1920s, was an important part of the United State’s history. During this time African Americans flourished in the music, literature, and art business. However, most of this time was a time of experimentation and great diversity (Partnership for Academic Competition Excellence). There was also a cultural explosion. This means that many people were expanding their horizons to new cultures. The Harlem Renaissance mainly focused on different culture’s styles of music, such as jazz and blues music. African American musicians took this to a whole new level. They incorporated themes, melodies and rhythms into their music. Some of the common music that came from this was jazz and blues. Other types of music during this time came from Europe. This included classical and symphonic styles of music. African American musicians during this time were striving for artistic achievements such as becoming a famous singer or musician. Many performers did achieve their goals. When they went out to perform, they commonly performed in Harlem night clubs. Eventually, musicians moved to perform in New York night clubs.
