The Guerrilla Girls have had their ups and downs, their message against discrimination has only widened and intensified: Both their support of equal representation of queer artists and artists of color, along with their focus on the flow on money through art channels have become key platforms in their fact-finding mission. In March 2012 alone, the Guerrilla Girls had two new projects hitting the streets and piercing minds, as they label themselves the conscious of the art world. The movie Rebel Without a Cause represents both gender theory and queer theory. Gender theory is how you present yourself, how do you move, small behaviors is more of a performance. The production code was in forced and forbade any mention of homosexuality. They were able to insert restrained references to Plato's homosexuality and attraction to Jim, by including the pinup photo of Alan Ladd on Plato's locker door, and Plato's adoring looks at Jim. Rebel Without a Cause is the story of a troubled new kid in town (Jim) caught in an escalating spiral of violence.
The Mirabal sisters from the Dominican Republic, known as the butterflies, fought against the regime of the cruel dictator Rafael Trujillo. They were murdered on November 25, 1960, for their activism and work in the anti-Trujillo movement known as the Fourteenth of June. Their sacrifice is still recognized today, 57 years later, and has had a lasting impact on human rights activism throughout the world. Their brutal assassination led to a regime change and eventual assassination of President Trujillo, recognition of the power resistant movements hold and world-wide awareness of violence against women.

Singer Joan Jett is know as a punk pioneer for aggressive and popular music and a women’s role model. Joan once said, “People don’t want to see women doing things they don’t think women should do.” Joan was apart of the 70’s all girl teen rock group know as The Runaways. Feminists filled the 1970s with the women’s movement, Females had worked hard to make room for women in male-dominated fields ranging from medical, law, national secuirity, and even rock and roll. The main argument was that there is no reason that a women can’t do the same work as a man in any field of work. To be able to fit in with a male-dominated field, the women had to act like the men in their attitueds and approaches to do well. If the women showed any vulnrtablity or femininity at all the womens stautus might fall. Even after all this there was still an unseen boundry perventing women from suceeding in a male’s world. This bountry continues to cut of wmen from really entering the male dominated carreers. In the film Silence of the Lambs, Clarice Starling is a trainee at the FBI academy. She faces being one of the only women in the male ran field of national secierity. Although she is seen as a vunrable and is seen as having no athority around the men she has to work with, Clarice’s character is smart and has what it takes to work in a male dominated world. Clarice has to constantly prove that she can work in a male domineted world without having to rely on her feminity. Women are able to hold jobs like men and become leaders like Calrice has done while being a female in a male-dominated world.
No other artist has ever made as extended or complex career of presenting herself to the camera as has Cindy Sherman. Yet, while all of her photographs are taken of Cindy Sherman, it is impossible to class call her works self-portraits. She has transformed and staged herself into as unnamed actresses in undefined B movies, make-believe television characters, pretend porn stars, undifferentiated young women in ambivalent emotional states, fashion mannequins, monsters form fairly tales and those which she has created, bodies with deformities, and numbers of grotesqueries. Her work as been praised and embraced by both feminist political groups and apolitical mainstream art. Essentially, Sherman’s photography is part of the culture and investigation of sexual and racial identity within the visual arts since the 1970’s. It has been said that, “The bulk of her work…has been constructed as a theater of femininity as it is formed and informed by mass culture…(her) pictures insist on the aporia of feminine identity tout court, represented in her pictures as a potentially limitless range of masquerades, roles, projections” (Sobieszek 229).
These specific ploys that are performed by the Guerrilla Girls are in the way they dress, the masks they wear, pseudonymous names of dead women artists and the witty factual evidence in their works. These are all examples to evoke audiences in challenging not only the art society which dictates the value and worth of women in art, but also to confront yourself and your own beliefs in a way that makes audiences rethink these growing issues. Over the last twenty years, the Guerrilla Girls have established a strong following due to the fact that they challenged and consistently exhibited a strong supportive subject matter that defies societal expectations. Feminism and political issues have always been centered on in the art world and artists like to take these ideas and stretch them beyond their true meanings. Female artists such as Hannah Höch, who thrived during the Dada movement in the 1920s in Germany and Barbara Kruger who was most successful during the 1980s to 1990s in the United States, both take these issues and present them in a way that forces the public to think about what they truly mean. Many of Kruger’s works close in on issues such as the female identity and in relation to politics she focuses on consumerism and power. Höch, like Kruger, also focuses on female identity but from the 1920s when feminism was a fairly new concept and like Kruger focuses on politics but focuses more on the issues of her time such as World War I. With the technique of photomontage, these two artists take outside images and put them together in a way that displays their true views on feminism and politics even though both are from different times and parts of the world.
Linda Nochlin in her article, “Why Have There Been No Great Women Artists?” discusses the various aspects to this issue and believes that even though the legal battles of the feminist movement provided formal legal equality to women, too often, it does not ensure substantive equalities. The explanations to this problem can cover the spectrum from sexism to feminism. Nochlin rightly believes that perhaps, the true answer lies in the institutional problems that plague our society. As Nochlin points out, “as late as 1893, lady students were not admitted to life drawing at the Royal Academy in London, and even when they were, after that date, the model had to be partially draped.” The very fact that women artists were denied the right to paint the nude model which was considered critical to the success of any artist validates the point of institutional bias against women. To deny an artist the opportunity to develop proficiency in painting the nude is denying them the prospect of painting historical themes. Most women artists were left with no choice but to concentrate on painting everyday subjects like portraits and still-life. This was a great setback to

These artist often extend their display of sexism in a variety of ways ranging from their casualness of profanity and coarse language in verbal interviews given, magazines, written articles, reality television programs to the many social settings of celebrities. Female artist are always depicted in these media vehicles and especially in mainstream movies. Their characters are very cliché in their portrayal of sexual roles, to the revealing costumes designed for the sexiest female artist ever. The speaking roles of featured female artist in movies are also flavored with several sexual innuendos and camera close up shots of their female anatomies. Appearing in roles like these even shows support for sexism coming from female artist. An article by a feminist even talks about a female artist appearing in a sexist music video and how it shows support. The writer says “Her appearance displays her unity not with the women branded ‘pigeons,’ but with the men who label them.” (McLune 223). It is a universal belief that the way people carry themselves through both verbal and non-verbal behaviors mandate how the world perceives them. To most people the movie Mean Girls is simply a silly teen chick flick and is not good for anything but pure entrainment. Even though Mean Girls is slightly dramatized, high school in reality is perfectly portrayed through this movie. Every high school varies but there is always a domain group of students. The socially powerful are the rich and beautiful girls and everyone else are the loyal subjects to their castle. However, there is a twist in Mean Girls, the message is actually positive. Mean Girls is sending a message that women should not criticize one another to feel empowerment, it is unattractive to men to be mindless, and that White Americans have domains over other races. This movie also implies that nothing wrong with being different from what society accepts.
