Gremlins The movie, Gremlins, is a 1984 comedy/horror film and features great stars like Zach Gilligan who plays Billy Peltzer, Phoebe Cates as Kate Beringer, Hoyt Axton as Randall Peltzer, and of course Gizmo, whose voice is done by Howie Mandel. This film is set in Kingston Falls, New York, in the 1980’s around Christmas. The film starts off with Randall Peltzer on the road trying to sell his outrageous inventions to storekeepers. While he was on the road he stopped in Chinatown seeking people to buy his inventions. The next thing you know he stumbles upon a weird antique shop. While he was in the shop he started to hear strange noises. Randall was curious to know what was making those noises. He quickly found out that is was a Mogwai, which is a small, cute and fuzzy creature. After falling in love with the mysterious creature and thinking it was going to be the perfect Christmas gift for his son, Billy, Randall was told by the owner of the shop, Mr. Wing, that the Mogwai wasn't for sale. was really upset as he was leaving the shop, but then Mr. Wing’s grandson offered to sell him the Mogwai because they were in desperate need of money. The boy, however, had three rules that had to be followed in order to have the Mogwai. Number one, never have it around bright light; sunlight will kill it. Number two, don't ever get it wet, and number three, never ever feed it after midnight. Randall agreed to these rules and started to make his way home. When he got home Randall was eager to see what Billy's reaction to the new family member, his furry friend Gizmo, would be. Billy was ecstatic about his new pet and couldn’t wait to show him off. A few days later Billy's friend Pete stops by delivering their Christmas tree and gets to meet Gizmo for the first time. Everything was going well until water accidently spilled onto Gizmo. All of a sudden furry balls started to pop out of Gizmo’s back and started to form into more Mogwai! Billy noticed that they all looked the same except that one had a white stripe on its head. Confused about the situation but eager to learn more, Billy went to his science teacher, Mr. Hanson, to try and get some answers. Mr. Hanson decided to run a few tests on one of the Mogwai and said that he would let Billy know if he discovered anything as soon as he could. Back at home Stripe, the leader of the Mogwai, had concocted an evil plan and cut the wire to Billy's clock so that they would be fed after midnight. The next day Billy woke up and saw a bunch of giant, slimy, green cocoons all around his room. Once the cocoons hatched the Mogwai that had been inside weren't cute and furry anymore. They had transformed into nasty, scaley, horrible, gremlins! The gremlins, led by Stripe, got loose and started to attack the whole town, causing terror and utter chaos. Could they be stopped? Billy would need some help, ingenuity, and a bit of luck if he was going to have a chance. Visual special effect have been used in movies almost since the beginning of filmmaking. The vast majority of films that come out of Hollywood, as well as many independent films, utilize special effects to bring the characters and story to life. Special effects can range from the explosion of a vehicle or building, to complex puppets or robots, to incredible computer generated images or CGI.
Gremlins did a fantastic job of pushing the boundaries of visual effect considering CGI was not being widely used in 1984. The visual effects team accomplished this mainly through the use of elaborate, handmade puppets and marionettes. They relied on their skills to create some of the movie’s main characters such as Gizmo, as well as Stripe and the other gremlins...the very creatures for which the movie was named. The gremlins had to be impressive and the visual effects team did not disappoint. Stripe and the others were extremely well detailed. They had beady little eyes, a mouthful of razor sharp teeth, and were covered in what looked like slimy green scales. For the time they were really quite scary looking. On the opposite end, they also created the furry and adorable, wideeyed Gizmo. Audiences fell in love with him instantly, and everyone wished that they had a Gizmo of their
own. In order to further bring the characters to life, it was important that the right voice actors were cast. Howie Mandel provided the perfect, babylike voice of Gizmo, which only made him even more enduring and left audiences with the famous “bright lights, bright lights” line just may be quoted by people until the end of time. Frank Welker also did a wonderful job as Stripe and other gremlins. Although they used very few words, the various laughs, grunts and other noises ranged from comical to downright diabolical. It seemed natural to chuckle during the bar scene when the gremlins were laughing, singing, and causing a ruckus, yet cringe a little when Stripe would use an evil tone. In addition, the casting of Zach Galligan seemed perfect. He portrayed the cute, sweet boy next store, Billy, effortlessly, and yet when called to action by the vicious gremlins, was able to transcend into the brave and strategic hero. The casting of actors and their ability to become their characters is crucial, and Gremlins delivered. Gremlins is a classic movie which I recommend to anyone who enjoys a comedyhorror film. It tells an interesting story and does a good job of hitting the emotional elements of its genre. I give it a 4 out of 5 stars.
The movie begins with self-centered, materialistic Charlie Babbitt (Tom Cruise), learning the death of his father. To settle his dad’s estate, he and his business partner/girlfriend, Susanna (Valeria Golino) travel to his home town Cincinnati. While he was hoping to inherit all of his dad’s estate, all he got was a car and a collection of rosebushes that he simply has no use for. The remaining $3 million fortune was put into a trust for an unnamed beneficiary. Charlie demands to know the identity of the beneficiary and finds out that it is a mental hospital where his long-lost autistic brother, Raymond (Dustin Hoffman) resides with a caretaker, Dr. Bruner (Gerald R. Molen).
The Monsters Are Due on Maple Street, a teleplay written by Rod Serling, starts in the late afternoon on Maple Street USA. Something bright flies overhead and the power goes out and the people who live there get advice from a 12 year old and get scared there are aliens out there. Tommy, the 12 year old, told them about the movies and comics that he has read. The narrator is an observer that is describing what happens while everyone goes mad trying to find a scapegoat. Steve is the only person who tries to reason with everyone while they are getting suspicious and trying to blame a scapegoat. This teleplay shows some of the human flaws that the people on maple street will encounter during their little power outage.
In the beginning of the movie, Walter Harvey a candy bar tycoon, hires Ira Lowenstein to
Cephalopods are known to be exceptionally intelligent by invertebrate standards and in some respects even rival “higher” vertebrates. These animals have many highly evolved sensory and processing organs that allow them to gain a greater understanding of their environment and their place within it. Due to their advanced structures, many of which are analogous to vertebrate structures, and abilities they have been widely studied. Their methods of learning have been of prime interest and many experiments have been conducted to determine the different ways in which octopuses can learn. From these experiments four main kinds of learning have been identified in octopuses: associative learning, special learning,
The article briefly goes over The Wizard of Oz, both the film and the book, and discusses how they fit into Campbell’s hero’s journey. Emerson summarizes Campbell’s idea of the hero’s journey for the reader, then splits Dorothy’s journey into three phases. The first phase is her travels on the yellow brick road where in the film she meets the Scarecrow, Tin Man, and Cowardly Lion, and in the book Dorothy and her companions overcome natural obstacles. The second phase begins when they meet the Wizard of Oz in the Emerald City, who sets them on a trial before they can receive their respective gifts. The pinnacle of this trial is the face off with the Wicked Witch of the West, where she is defeated when Dorothy throws a bucket of water on her

Marge Piercy is an American novelist, essayist, and poet best known for writing with a trademark feminist slant. In "What's That Smell in the Kitchen?" Marge Piercy explores the way women are sometimes held in low esteem by men through the eyes of a tired housewife who has had it with her monotonous day- to-day duties. In this poem, it is not stated that the speaker is a homemaker, but the reader is told about one woman in particular who is meant to express the feelings of women as a whole. The author conveys this central idea through imagery, figurative language, and devices of sound.
In 1967, three monsters were designed for a commercial for General Foods, later two of them would be adopted for Sesame Street. One was the Grouch who lived in a trash can and the other was everyone’s favorite Cookie Monster. He would gain his persona later in one episode
A hero. Today, by definition, to be a hero is to have abundant power, defiance, to attain fame and wealth, and to have the intrepidity to help the ones who cannot defend for themselves. However, Bilbo Baggins, the protagonist of The Hobbit, by J.R.R Tolkien, grows to be a hero without possessing any of these qualities after he partakes in an adventure to help reclaim the Dwarves’ homeland from the dragon Smaug. This quest to the Lonely Mountain brings the indolent hobbit into a completely new world, where he faces trouble and experiences a region of supernatural wonder. Bilbo’s adequacy and heroism are shown in the adventure through his latent cunningness and courageous acts, and through the loyalty and devotion he shows to his companions.
The fairytale The Beauty and the Beast is illustrated as a love story, however when looking deeper into Belle’s nature it seems to be that she is affected by several disorders throughout the film. In Beauty and the Beast, we see Disney once again sugarcoat personal problems in order to present a young audience with a one dimensional and simple female hero. Belle has clearly shown symptoms of Schizoid Personality Disorder, Stockholm Syndrome and Schizophrenia which can be treated by a biological therapeutic approach or a psychoactive drug approach and therapy.
This movie starts off as Jordan Belfort, the main character in the movie, losing his job as a stockbroker in Wall Street. After losing his job, he goes and gets a job in a Long Island brokerage room. In the brokerage room, he sells penny stocks. Thanks to him being aggressive in his selling skills, he was able to make a profit. With the new income, he gives his wife a bracelet and she asked him why doesn’t he go after the people that can afford to lose money, not the middle-class people or lower income people. That is when he gets the idea to get a lot of young people and train them to become the best stock brokers.
Anthrax is a bacterial disease caused by bacteria called Bacillus anthracis (buh-SIL-us an-THRAY-sus). The Bacillus anthracis can exist in two different forms: favorable form, when the bacteria are rod-shaped and can grow and divide, or the unfavorable form, when they form a very resistant dormant spore that helps them survive extreme environmental conditions. Like other bacteria, Bacillus anthracis is very small, only about 1 by 9 micrometers in size. It is Gram-positive, which makes the bacteria purple-pinkish rods, with a relatively long lifespan of over 70 years. Bacillus anthracis feed on iron, oxygen, water, and nutrients to survive and reproduce. Bacillus anthracis need a favorable environment, but can reproduce in many different ways, either through spore germination, asexual bacterial reproduction, or formation of new spores. Herbivore animals such as cattle, sheep, and goats are the primary target of these bacteria and can be infected when they breathe in or ingest spores in contaminated soil, plants, or water. These elliptical shaped spores have thick and layered walls which make it resistant to heat, dryness, ultraviolet light, and gamma radiations. These spores initially develop inside the rod-shaped form, causing it to be named endospore. Because the bacteria is zoonosis, which means that it affects domestic and wild animals primarily, it is very rare for people to be infected by anthrax, but it is theoretically possible when the spores get into the body either through coming in contact with infected animals or contaminated animal products. Even though people can be infected with anthrax through animal contacts, it is not contagious, meaning that it cannot be transmitted from a person to person. After the spores get ...

If you’ve been single in high school or college, you know that there’s a word that can potentially devastate your dating prospects: one judgment that can come down like the Great Wall of China between you and the person of interest. It’s a word so disheartening, if you see it applied to someone who you don’t even know, your first instinct is pity. In television, it’s usually the line that comes after the girl at the bar rejects the guy: “that guy was kind of creepy.” Being judged as creepy is a terrifying prospect, largely because it’s so hard to qualify what constitutes “creepiness”. We all know creeps exist, and some people definitely make you think that they are ones. But usually creeps have no idea that they're creeps, don't understand why they're creeps, and get mad when people call them creeps. So why are people so often creeps? Merriam Webster defines creepy as “strange or scary: causing people to feel nervous and afraid.” This definition is not helpful since it’s difficult to predict how any given person will receive a given action. People are subjective and contexts change. Since the dictionary definition isn’t useful for dating purposes, perhaps if we put it in terms of a formula, we can establish a general rule for what creepy is. Here is an informal Creepiness Quotient to describe the feeling someone gives you in the first few seconds they're hitting on you:
Anthrax is a bacterial disease instigated by the endospore-forming, rod-shaped bacterium Bacillus anthracis . Anthrax itself comes from the Greek word for coal, nthrax, attributable to the coal colored lesions that oftentimes develop on victims’ dermis. Though the sporadic disease most commonly affects animals in agricultural regions, it can sometimes infect humans and cause serious illness as well as both hypodermic and internal infections that can prove fatal to those infected.
