The Hellenistic period was a long-lasting period which spanned from 323 BC to 31 BC. It began with the death of Alexander the Great and ended with the rise of the Roman Empire. Throughout this period the Hellenistic people achieved many great things. They conquered lands while exploring and mapping out new ones. They made wonderful artworks, designed amazing pieces of architecture, and wrote vast amounts of literature. They also made groundbreaking scientific discoveries in the fields of mathematics, astronomy, and anatomy. The achievements of the Hellenistic people were the starting roots of the tree of knowledge that we possess today. All of the achievements of the Hellenistic people wouldn’t have been possible with Alexander the Great. Alexander was the son of King Philip II, ruler of Macedonia. After his father was assassinated, Alexander took over the throne. However, he was no ordinary king. Alexander gained the love of his people by fighting alongside them, and even leading the charge, in the many battles that occurred as his army went from city to city conquering all of the land imaginable from Macedonia to eastern India. Hellenistic families began raising more baby girls than ever before. Greek women were now able to obtain full citizenship, hold religious offices, own land and property, and even pay taxes. Women were now able to provide more than just birthing children to their communities. They built temples and public works and donated money to lesser endowed women. In the city of Alexandria women even began to become educated. They were taught many subjects including dancing, music, reading, writing, and philosophy.
