The Great Uniform Debate

Have you even considered how a student feels about wearing uniforms? In fact, almost 65% of students dislike them. This number illustrates that more than half of the students object the uniforms. Although students may be required to wear uniforms because of the inappropriate clothing some wear, a school’s dress code is much more beneficial. Wearing uniforms will constrain the student from expressing their creativity through clothing: as a result, stripping away individuality. Since school is for learning, the system should not push the effort into student’s uniforms because it is not an educational goal.
To begin with, students should have the freedom to choose their own clothing. The schools systems should use a dress code, since this will not completely suppress one’s creativity. This plan gives students a chance to express their imagination and personality through their own clothing. Moreover, it teaches students to have their own judgment about what type of clothes are appropriate or inappropriate. What is equally important, a student’s religion. If students are religious, they should not have to break their traditions because of uniforms. For instance, some religions require students to wear special headdresses or specific articles of clothing. In other words, once uniforms are established, they cannot wear them. They should not have to ask for it to be allowed, religion is their life. Furthermore, students are able to feel more confident and comfortable in their own clothing. Having confidence is important to students because it inspires them to keep moving forward. Therefore, instead of forcing uniforms upon the students to be worn everyday, schools should enforce a dress code instead.

As long as the student can make their own good choices in buying their own clothing, like setting budgets, it can be much less costly. Lastly, it ensures that students are showing their personality not only by their looks. Not judging a book by its cover is important but at school, students should learn that by themselves. It’s only natural that we judge people but it is vital that we don’t say it aloud.
Consequently, uniforms should not be an educational goal in our society because there are always alternative ways of doing so. Instead of uniforms, the school can use dress codes. It also disables the student from conveying their uniqueness through their clothing. Therefore, making uniforms redundant.
