Meyer Wolfshiem was a mobster and apart of New York’s underworld. He saw Jay Gatsby as a charming and clever man that would do well in his business. So Meyers gave Jay a job, he became a bootlegger and it is possible that he did other unscrupulous jobs for Meyers. Jay’s wealth and all that he possessed were the results of his illegal and criminal acts.

He contends that Wilson was going to kill him if he did not tell him who owned the yellow car, that he did so to protect his own life. But it is clear to the reader and Nick that he knew or even hoped that Wilson would kill Jay. With Gatsby dead it would be eliminated the threat of losing
