Chantell Ramirez Ms. Tobias English 3 GT-6th 12 January 2017 The Great Gatsby similarities and differences The Great Gatsby was written by F. Scott Fitzgerald, it was published in 1925. It was taken place in the roaring 20s’ and it was about the American dream, this was taken place before the Great Depression, everybody had no worries about the economy. The film was made in 2013 and it was directed by Baz Luhrmann. Between the film and the novel there was some differences that seemed minor but they affected the relationships between the characters that changed the way you thought of the characters. For example, in the film they didn’t go into detail about Nick and Jordan’s relationship or they made Daisy seem so innocent in the movie but …show more content…
The similarities in the novel say about the strongest points of the film are the scene when he gets the invitation to the “little party” because if Luhrmann didn’t include it, it would’ve seemed fake because Nick’s character isn’t the outgoing type. Comparing the book and the film gave a new perspective because Daisy was portrayed as a innocent girl who didn’t know her husband was cheating on her in the film, but in the novel we realize that she isn’t that thoughtless, she mostly cared about herself. I really enjoyed the little detail that was added at the end of the film when Nick adds “The Great” to the title of the novel he wrote about Gatsby because it tied the whole film together. In the novel Fitzgerald should’ve added “The Great” becuase it would’ve been so unique and interesting because you start thinking about the whole novel. In conclusion the film and the novel are great although the film might not be entirely similar to the novel but they added some stuff to the film that the novel didn’t have, but it worked. I thought the movie was better because I thought the ending of the movie was so much better than the novel ending. When Nick ends the film by adding “The Great” it made me tear up, because he was the only one who actually cared about Gatsby, all those people that would go to his parties never really cared about him, the majority of them didn’t know what Gatsby looked like, but Nick could’ve stopped being his friend after Gatsby took the fall for Daisy but no Nick wanted to know if Daisy called Gatsby because he knew Gatsby was madly in love with her. At the end of the film Gatsby dies a winner well he thinks he does, because when he gets the phone call he goes to get it but he is shot, he thinks he won Daisy but really it was just
F. Scott Fitzgerald's novel, “The Great Gatsby”, and Baz Luhrmann’s film, “The Great Gatsby”, both have similarities and contrasts between the two of them. The Great Gatsby is a novel and film taken place in the 1920s filled with wild parties, mysterious people, The American Dream, and most of all, love. There are several things that can be compared between the novel and film; such as the characters and the setting. There are also contrasts between the two as well; which is mainly involving the character Nick.
Although most of the characters were portrayed the best that they could be, Daisy was not. In the book Daisy is said to have “The voice of money” (Fitzgerald 127). However, in the movie she talks more sweetly and not at all how I expected her to be played. In the novel, Gatsby’s father shows up to the funeral and shows Nick the journal that Gatsby had had when he was younger and talks about how proud he is of Gatsby but unlike the novel, the movie does not have this scene (Fitzgerald 180-182). However, the movie shows that no one came to Gatsby’s funeral except all the paparazzi that showed up to take pictures of him in his casket (The Great Gatsby). I feel this should have really been included because it showed a little more insight into the life of Jay Gatsby. The last and final difference I have about this comparison is about the scene where Daisy is going to visit Nick for tea. The book really did not include many details about how Nick’s house looked after Gatsby had sent everyone over to “get it ready” (Fitzgerald 89-90). When this scene occurred in the movie, I was really thrown off because of how decorated it was. Especially all the flowers that had been brought over to Nick’s house. It was filled to the brim with flowers which made the scene more awkward than it should have
Jay Gatsby’s funeral is a small service, not because that 's what was intended, but because no one bothered to show up. Nick wanted to give Gatsby the popularity he desired, even in death, but only three people were present in the end. Gatsby’s father, Henry C. Gatz, shows up unexpectedly from Minnesota because he heard about the news in the papers. He believes that the man who shot his son must 've been mad, that no one in their right mind could commit such a horrible act. Daisy and Wolfsheim, the people closest to Gatsby in the book, do not attend. This exemplifies that it was always about wealth and social status for them, including Tom, and they never genuinely cared for Gatsby. Nick held up hope,
In conclusion the Great Gatsby 2013 film adaptation is a piece of work that will be remembered for its stunning visuals not a gripping storyline. However this forgettable story is somewhat salvaged by the characterization of Jay Gatsby who shines through as someone to watch the movie just to see. The movie is quite split when it comes to the historical accuracy. Topics like Fashion and modes of transportation are not accurately represented while topics like race relations and the setting of New York City in the roaring 20s are excellently and accurately portrayed. In my opinion this movie with its masterful visual direction and the deep character Gatsby is a movie worth seeing. Who knows you could have a totally different opinion.
In many stories a reader sides with one or two characters for the whole story. In this book you may have sided with Daisy at the beginning but towards the end you despise her. Even with Nick Carraway the narrator of the story. The reader usually takes sides with the narrator of the story. Yet, at some points during the story I felt that Nick should have stopped Gatsby from using him. It was Nick’s own fault that he got caught up in Gatsby’s drama. Gatsby at first was a character a reader did not know much about. F. Scott Fitzgerald did so to keep Gatsby as a secret prize for later. It kept us readers wanting to keep reading and to learn more about Gatsby. Daisy’s character was very dynamic. At first, we see an innocent girl just exploring her love between two men. By the end of the story she turned into a coward and left the town as soon as she could. “Good writing” does not let a reader know what is to be expected. With the characters of this story a reader at many times struggled with who was right and wrong. The changing of the character’s emotions and personality contribute to the making of a great
Thesis: How does F. Scott Fitzgerald's novel, The Great Gatsby, compares the American Dream in today's generation and back in the 1920's-30's? What did the American Dream really mean and why? So why did this issue happen? Do you think America can change in the future? What is the american dream really about? When did the phrase: ‘american dream’ started? Have you ever wondered what the 20s and 30s were like back then? How can this so called dream ever bring hope to our country? These are all the questions I would like to know myself. I’ve found three online sources & one source from the novel that can help explain about the 20th century, the Gatsby novel, today's generation, and about Mr.Gatsby from the book.
The Great Gatsby is a parody of itself. While Fitzgerald tries hard not to make Gatsby and especially Daisy laughable personalities, this is where he ultimately fails. There's not enough ironic distance to his characters. As Gatsby, at least in the eyes of many critics, should represent the idea of the American Dream, the presentation of his character puts the whole concept in question again, without being intended as criticism. This is mainly the fault of another weak character in the novel, Nick Carraway.
Thus, Luhrmann wrote the film adaptation of The Great Gatsby in 2013. Fitzgerald wrote 1925. That is almost a century in difference, with an entirely new generation. By changing the details characters and the setting, Luhrmann has allowed a great masterpiece to reach a young and new audience. Regardless of the differences, the tale of The Great Gatsby still excites audiences the same as it did in 1925.
F. Scott Fitzgerald’s novel, The Great Gatsby, and Baz Luhrmann’s movie adaption can hardly be compared but the film somewhat stay true to the text. Luhrmann’s movie was fun to watch but it should have had more originality to it from the
"The Great Gatsby" is a book full of passion. There is Gatsby 's passionate love for Daisy. There is Tom 's passion for money. When reading this book I realized that these people broke the American dream in their time. They couldn 't be happy when all they did was chase money. The Great Gatsby was full of themes, motif 's, and symbolism and the way that fitzgerald used his characters to get his point across of what it was like back them was marvelous. Gatsby just wanted the love of his life back, so he did everything he could so that he could support her. I think that out of every single character, Gatsby 's choices were the most pure. The only reason he wanted all of the money that he got was because he wanted to make the woman he loved happy,
“The Great Gatsby “, film adaptation directed by Baz Luhrmann in 2013 is almost as great as the novel written by F. Scott Fitzgerald in 1925. The Great Gatsby is a literary classic set in the 1920’s in the fictional town of West Egg. The tale is based on Nick Carraway, a Midwestern war veteran in the summer of 1922, who finds himself obsessed with the past lifestyle of his mysterious, fabulously and wealthy neighbour Jay Gatsby and his love for the beautiful Daisy Buchanan. This film adaptation compared to the novel is a very interesting one. It is also easily understood and keeps the viewers’ attention right through the movie.
I have read many books during my life. The Great Gatsby was the only novel that I found to be magnificent. F. Scott Fitzgerald has made me realize that there are many aspects in life that need to be taken seriously. The Great Gatsby has struck me emotionally as well as physically - it contains both physical and emotional pain.
As an American citizen we seem to make presumption that all cultures are different from ours, and some might even call those cultures weird. Americans fail to realize just how similar we are to these “weird” cultures. By reading Things Fall Apart, by Chinua Achebe and The Great Gatsby by F.Scott Fitzgerald , it makes the reader realize how similar the African culture is from the American culture. There 's those obvious differences we already knew about with the two cultures, but readers can learn that not just American culture value men and give them advantages, but many cultures including 1900 's African culture. In both books we come across two main characters that is portrayed as being more superior compared to others. Okonkwo, main
Movies can enhance the experience of a story, but they aren’t always completely accurate to the book. The movie, The Great Gatsby, by Baz Luhrmann, is a good representation of F. Scott Fitzgerald’s novel; however, there are quite a few differences between the two. Some differences include; the portrayal of the characters, the importance of symbolism, and events that were either added or taken out of the movie.
The great Gatsby by F. Scott Fitzgerald is a popular book that was published in the early 1900s. An adaptation of the book by the same name was released in 2013 and directed by Baz luhrmann. The book and film are both relatively the same with a few minor differences. The story follows a young wealthy man named Jay Gatsby, who is deeply in love with a woman named Daisy Buchanan. His real name is James Gatsby and initially was a very poor man, he had told Daisy to be patient for him, as he was determined to become rich so that he can provide her with whatever she wanted in life.
