Books all around the world often inspire and influence us. The novel, The Great Gatsby, by F. Scott Fitzgerald, is read throughout the nation as a world-renowned classic. The main character, Jay Gatsby, has an extravagant amount of money yet minimal happiness. I found this instance very interesting because even with everything he has, he still is not content. I realized while reading that money can never guarantee happiness or love. This novel provides many instances where Gatsby's happiness starts to show cracks. To begin, Gatsby’s happiness comes from one person, Daisy. Everything Gatsby does is for Daisy; the location of his house and his parties are all for her. An example of his love for Daisy is when Jordan Baker says “Gatsby bought that house so that Daisy would be just across the bay” (78). …show more content…

Another illustration of Gatsby’s love for Daisy is when he finally captured her heart. As soon as Gatsby and Daisy started their affair, he fired all of his servants just to make her feel comfortable. On page 114, it says “I wanted somebody who wouldn’t gossip”. Daisy comes over quite often.” This quote also exemplifies that Gatsby would go through all the trouble of hiring and firing his staff just for the woman he loves. Although Gatsby and Daisy had an intense love affair, the infatuation unfortunately ended. Daisy, in love with Gatsby, ended up with her manipulative husband, Tom. Gatsby, still longing for Daisy, keeps waiting for her. Gatsby’s indication of his loss is when he states “Your wife doesn’t love you.She never loved you. She loves me” (130). This statement reveals Gatsby’s desperation for Daisy to pick him, foreshadowing his loss to Tom. Fast forward weeks later and Gatsby dies of an unfortunate death.
