Told by Nick Caraway, and written by Scott F. Fitzgerald, The Great Gatsby is a classic novel that gives readers a glimpse inside the lives of the wealthy during the roaring 20s. The story follows the lives of Jay Gatsby, a man of new money, Daisy Buchanan, a married girl of old money, and Tom Buchanan, Daisy’s deceitful husband. Jay Gatsby is a man of mystery, with seemly unlimited funds, who throws ridiculous outrageous parties for no apparent reason. It’s learned that he has become the rich man is he, to impress his love, Daisy Buchanan, whom he fell in love with five years ago. The movie mainly focuses on the love story of Daisy and Gatsby. The director shows the theme of love through scenes, like flashbacks, spoken dialogue, music, and through the characters. Out of all of the elements, Luhrmann’s choice of music really captured the essence of an epic love. “Young and Beautiful” by Lana Del Rey was a song that can be heard multiple times throughout the movie, this song provokes feeling and really sets up the mood of a love story. At the scene where Gatsby sees Daisy for the first time in five years and he shows her around his house, “Young and Beautiful” is played, as the viewer sees Daisy falling for Gatsby once again. In addition to the music, many scenes in the movie attributed to theme of love. In the first flashback scene of Daisy and Gatsby, when Nick learns about sir past, the viewer can see Gatsby and Daisy talking, obviously flirting. According to Jordan, Gatsby looked at Daisy “the way every girl wants to be looked at”. Then Daisy is shown reading a letter from Gatsby after not hearing from him for years, and she gets extremely upset. Daisy was about to marry another man, this scene showed that she was probably still in love with Gatsby at that time, but couldn’t have him. When Gatsby and Daisy see each other for the first time in five years, the camera is in on a close-up, letting the viewer see their connection and love for each other, clearly showing they miss each other. Leonardo DiCaprio, who plays Gatsby, and Carey Mulligan, who plays Daisy, successfully portray the chemistry these two characters have. The montage of Gatsby showing Daisy his house, shows a variety of moments between Daisy and Gatsby rekindling their love for each other. The viewer later find out, by the narration of Nick Caraway, that Gatsby has had this grand dream of living happier ever after with Daisy since he met her.
