It offers a modern interpretation of the basics of the novel and allows viewers to connect with the characters. There are many comparable and contrasting features between the novel and film such as plot and setting, characters, modernization, and theme. When talking about the plot and setting in The Great Gatsby between the novel and film, there were many comparisons and contrasts. Both the novel and film have the same story line, characters, and theme. Both revolve around the life of Jay Gatsby, a wealthy, yet mysterious man. Even though being the host, Gatsby often would stay distant and observe his guests instead of interacting. Then enforcing a view of a mysterious aura onto Gatsby and his actions. There were many other events throughout the novel that pointed to Jay Gatsby as a mysterious man, such as rumors about his past. “I heard he killed a man once.” Rumors about Gatsby's past lead to his reputation looked at as mysterious and sketchy. Many people believed many rumors about his past, his false wealth, involvement in criminal activities. While he would never speak up about any of those topics, it added heavily to people's opinions about him. The film had aligned with his view as a mysterious character that occurred in the novel. Scenes were often shot with special lights, certain views during his parties, private moments, to contribute to his “mysterious” character. Many of Gatsby's interactions with other characters were used to maintain his aura of mystery.
