The Great Gatsby: Chapter One And Two

As we begin reading, we are immediately thrown into the mind of Nick Carraway, which we later learn is the narrator of The Great Gatsby. Like most beginning chapters we are given background information on our main characters, which in this case is Nick, Tom, and Daisy. We are also introduced to Daisy’s friend Miss Baker but not really told anything except for the fact that she seems to be overly interested in the fact that Tom is cheating on Daisy. The notorious Jay Gatsby is briefly mentioned and is seen at the end of chapter one walking alone acting somewhat strange. Going into the second chapter Tom takes Nick to meet his mistress, Myrtle Wilson, a woman that seems to be very worldly. Myrtle’s husband, George Wilson, is a mechanic and is described as being dumb. …show more content…

All we really learn about her sister is she is very much like her sister in the sense that she is spoiled, giving the impression that they probably come from a rather wealthy family. Mister and Misses McKee join their little gathering, but do not really contribute much to the storyline. Catherine explains that she believes Gatsby inherited all his money from Kaiser Wilhelm and then claims that she is afraid of me. As the guests begin to converse again Tom and Myrtle state that neither of them can stand their spouses. Catherine then lies about Daisy being catholic and says that Tom can't divorce her because of it. The party continues and Tom and Myrtle get into an argument that leads to Tom breaking Myrtle’s nose, so not only have we learned that Tom is a white supremacist but he also has quite the temper. During the commotion Nick and Mr.McKee manage to sneak out. The chapter ends with Nick waking up at Pennsylvania
