Can Money Buy Happiness? If you came from a broken home with no money would you be cool with staying in that situation? What would you think of someone that came from an abusive home with almost no money to live off of? In the novel The Great Gatsby by F. Scott Fitzgerald Gatsby comes from a home with no money and an abusive father and he did anything he could to make money even if it was illegal. Despite all of that Nick looks up to Gatsby's determination to succeed in life with everything he was given and anything he can take. This is a result of Nick realizing that Gatsby is unbelievably self-centered. Nick also notices that Gatsby is delusional. He notices this due to Gatsby thinking that simply because he wants to be with Daisy, she also wants to be with him. Gatsby believes that Daisy wants to leave Tom, and that she will say “she never loved Tom or had any feelings for him”(109). Gatsby truly believes that she will do this as a result of her having feelings for him. Nick also notices that despite Gatsby’s delusional selfishness, he is no better than Tom for he is trying to take another man's wife. In addition, Gatsby doesn’t understand his place at Tom’s house and thinks that by staying there he is helping to keep Daisy safe from something. He doesn’t understand that he is not there to save Daisy, but to simply be there.”I’m just going to wait here and see if he tries to bother her about that unpleasantness this afternoon. She’s locked herself into her room, and if he tries any brutality she’s going to turn the light out and on again”(144).
