It took Neil nine days to recover. The first few were pretty awful; he could barely move without being in pain. I ended up bringing in my favorite book, The Great Gatsby, reading it to him to try and keep his mind off of the pain. After the pain came the cough. With his weak body, it took all of the energy inside of him to do so. The doctors were all worried it would turn into pneumonia, but this time it looked like he lucked out. During those nine days I did not hear one joke from Neil Mackenire; I barely received a smile when I walked through the door. I too was worried, and each day I felt worse and worse for being the one to blame for his illness. I got into my car and drove to the hospital stopping at the local coffee shop first for some coffee. I was going to need it. *** I walked into the hospital and made sure to stop in the bathroom to wash my hands before going into Neil's room. Although he seemed to be better, I did not want to risk anything. He was still asleep when I walked in, so I quietly worked to set up the DVD player I had brought and connected it to the television. I had to scoot the chair over to stand on so I could reach the television, and of course this was the time Neil decided to wake up. I had my back to him, so I jumped in surprise when I heard him ask, "w-what in the world are you d-doing?" which almost caused me to fall off of the chair. I quickly regained my balance and stepped down on to the floor and ran my fingers through my hair anxiously.
