The Great Escape Did you know that at Alcatraz supposedly no one has escaped but thirty-six have tried (alcatrazhistory.com)? Alcatraz is high security prison on an island in the San Francisco Bay for the worst criminals. Frank Morris, and John and Clarence Anglin prepared for months to escape, it has always been a mystery if the three men survived. Officials have been searching for these three men for many years and have found extensive evidence showing that they survived their escape. Alcatraz, was nicknamed “the Rock” because of its concrete walls and solid steel bars. People have said that it is escape proof and even if someone got out they would most likely die in the bay, be sucked out into the ocean, killed by a guard, or captured. Prison had its benefits such as jobs, good food, and privacy. Although many people did not say that they had a good life at prison some say that it wasn’t horrible and it was in fact better than other prisons. Alcatraz is located in the center of the San Francisco Bay in California. According to Alcatraz history.com, Alcatraz was opened August eleventh nineteen thirty-four. At Alcatraz thirty-six men have attempted escapes, twenty-three were caught, six were killed, and five have …show more content…
Researchers believed that Frank Morris was the mastermind of the plan, (alcatrazhistory.com). According to Alcatraz history.com the men began their escape plans in December nineteen sixty-one. Their plans were very complex and confusing. They planned to construct a raft out of raincoats, create dummy heads with cement powder, and stitch life preservers. They used fifty raincoats to create their raft and life preservers. These things were necessary to their escape but they also had to get some help and figure out a way to muffle the noise of them chipping away at their cell
I am reading a novel by Alan Gratz. It is called Prisoner B-3087, and it is based on a true story! Prisoner B-3087 is about a kid who gets sent off to be a slave by the Nazis (Yanek). Yanek is all by himself in World War 2, no one to lean on, and no one to ask for help. I can not explain in words how happy yanek is to be alive. Yanek is starving, and thirsty, but he does not know how much time he has. Does yanek have what it take to make it through without losing his will to live, and his sense of who he really is inside. You are going to have to read Prisoner B-3087 to find out if he really has it in him. I recommend the book to all kids and parent 11 to 100 it is a great story. You will love it so much that you will not put the book down.
Kingston Penitentiary is located on the shore of Lake Ontario in Ontario, Canada. It has served as the main symbol of punishment in Canadian society. Penitentiary Houses were first created in Great Britain in 1779. It was on June 1, 1835 that Kingston Penitentiary formerly known as the Provincial Penitentiary admitted its first six inmates.
...from stories of the time. While many sources say that they argue with the wild perpetuation in their first paragraph they then maintain an indefinite description of the prison and attempt not to give a detailed look at the components and history of the prison before it lost life when shutting down aside from those stories describing how wild the west was. With this I was also not able to talk to any true experts of the prison, nor visit the prison or those surviving the ones who lived there on either side of the law causing my knowledge and research to be limited to the web, which as before mentioned is limited by lack of fresh or widely varied information. Had there been more sources that went into detail about the prisons other features aside from its capacity I would have been able to give more than an educated, generalized guess on how the some of the prison was.
Pelican Bay State Prison, a place where gang leaders and other gang member are sent to keep off the streets and causing havoc in communities like drug trafficking and other numerous offenses that gets them landed there. But to them, as stated in the “Pelican Bay State Prison: War Zone”, it’s a place where they earn more respect, they learn more tricks of the trade and become worse with the other gang members and leaders they cohabitate with. In the video is show that career criminals are able to conduct their business even from, the same crimes that got them in jail in the first place. The Pelican Bay State Prison has been understaffed and overcrowded since the beginning, “The Pelican Bay supermax—ostensibly designed to hold
When envisioning a prison, one often conceptualizes a grisly scene of hardened rapists and murderers wandering aimlessly down the darkened halls of Alcatraz, as opposed to a pleasant facility catering to the needs of troubled souls. Prisons have long been a source of punishment for inmates in America and the debate continues as to whether or not an overhaul of the US prison system should occur. Such an overhaul would readjust the focuses of prison to rehabilitation and incarceration of inmates instead of the current focuses of punishment and incarceration. Altering the goal of the entire state and federal prison system for the purpose of rehabilitation is an unrealistic objective, however. Rehabilitation should not be the main purpose of prison because there are outlying factors that negatively affect the success of rehabilitation programs and such programs would be too costly for prisons currently struggling to accommodate additional inmate needs.
When people talk about Alcatraz, they usually remember it is an island with a prison on it, but many do not know what is included inside the prison. Two common places inmates were in most of the time were either the dining hall, where the prisoners and staff would eat their meals, or a library in which inmates could check out books and magazines. The Models Industries Building contained a laundry facility, and the New Industries Building contained a clothing factory, dry cleaning plant, furniture plant, and a brush factory where prisoners could work and earn money. Prisoners had the chance to make items such as gloves, furniture mats, and army uniforms. Military officers were found in the dining hall since that was where they ate their meals, but they were also found in the other places as well. Former Military Chapel was a small building, where the ground floor had quarters for the officers and their families who worked at the prison. In 1920, when the building was first built, the top floor of the building was used as a school and chapel, but in 1934 when Alcatraz became a Federal Penitentiary, the building became a Bachelor Quarters for unmarried officers. Later on, the officers and their families eventually stayed in Building 64 which was a three story apartment building. The best part of living in the prison for
Capone lived in Alcatraz for 11 years and when he got out he fell ill with Neurosyphilis and died from his disease on january 25 1947.
When prisoners were asked if there was anything to like about Alcatraz Willie Radkey, former inmate, responded by saying that there was. He said he enjoyed the privacy of having his own cell. He also said that he found the guards to be respectful most of the time. Overall he said that his time at Alcatraz was better than at any other prison he had been in.
The description of Alcatraz is sinister and quite mysterious. Many people describe it as a haunted attraction,
The thought of Alcatraz started in the 1920’s when gangsters were fighting and killing just about everyone they saw that posed a threat. This was happening because they had made a new law. This law was called the National Prohibition Act. Even though it was illegal so many people wanted to buy alcohol. So the criminals ruled. Some criminals started to sneak alcohol in from other countries. Soon after that Illegal bars opened. This caused a lot of trouble. People couldn’t contain these “super gangsters.” They kept selling the alcohol and making a greater, and greater profit. Most of them lived like kings, they paid the police and local politicians to leave them alone. Even from regular prisons they controlled everything, criminals ruled they paid the guards and kept in touch with their people on the outside. This was when Homer C. Cummings made Alcatraz. This place was for the toughest of the tough. In this essay I will explain Alcatraz.
Al Capone once said about Alcatraz " Don't mistake my kindness for weakness, I am kind to everyone, but when someone is unkind to me, weak is not what you are going to remember me about." One of the most dreaded prisons in America was Alcatraz, it was built on an island in the San Francisco Bay. Alcatraz was made for the United States most dangerous and difficult people during its years of being operated. Even though Alcatraz was built as a top end prison it was possible to escape, however it seemed prisoners never made it off the island alive.
Alcatraz was a Federal Prison located in the San Francisco Bay. It was built on a twelve acre, solid rock island, one mile from the main land. There were no roads or bridges built to get there. The only access was by boat. The name Alcatraz means Pelican or strange bird. The reason it was named that was because when it was being built it had a lot of strange birds on it. It was built in 1933 as a federal maximum security prison. But prior to Alcatraz being built it had been a military prison and before that an Indian Reservation.
The correctional system is based on helping offenders become part of society and not commit any crimes. Many prisons begin the correcting criminals since they are inside the jails, but many prisons do not. Prisons provide prisoners with jobs inside the prison where they get very little pay close to nothing and many have programs that will help them advance their education or get their high school diploma. There are various programs prisons provide to prisoners to help them get a job or have a skill when they are released from prison. In contrast, prisons that do not provide programs or help to prisoners rehabilitate and enter society again will be more likely to commit another crime and go back to jail. The Shawshank Redemption prison did not
Alcatraz Island has quite a distinct history. Many people know that Alcatraz served as a federal prison, but most are reluctant to know that this island served as fort. Built before the Civil War, it served two main purposes. First, that it was to guard the San Francisco bay area from enemy ships against a foreign invasion, and second, to hold hostage prisoners of war or POW's as they were called. In this report, I'll show you how this fortress came to be a federal prison, why it is no longer in operation today, and most importantly, to show why it was built in the first place. When the great "Gold Rush" of 1849 first started, California grew from what would be considered a small, unpopulated state, into what it is now. California is now one of the most populated states and it was mostly the gold rush that brought attention to California. As the government saw all of this happening, they realized that California was much more important than they ever realized. In their realization, they decided that California must be protected. San Francisco has one of the largest bays in all of California, and so this was where enemy countries would most likely to try to invade the country. So this is where Alcatraz was to lie, to serve as a military fort. It was supposed to serve as a secondary base in companionship to another base located on the other side of Golden Gate Bridge. But with severe problems trying to build this other base, Alcatraz was to remain alone. "Out in the middle of the San Francisco Bay, the island of Alcatraz is definitely a world unto itself. Isolation is just one of the many constants of island life for any inhabitant on Alcatraz Island. It is the most reoccurring theme in the unfolding history of Alcatraz Island. Alcatraz Island is one of Golden Gate National Recreation Area's most popular destinations, offering a close-up look at a historic and infamous federal prison long off-limits to the public. Visitors to the island can not only explore the remnants of the prison, but learn of the American occupation of 1969 - 1971, early military fortifications and the West Coast's first and oldest operating lighthouse. These structures stand among the island's many natural features - gardens, tidepools, bird nests, and bay views beyond compare." (1) Fortress Alcatraz ran in operation from 1850 - 1933. It served as San Fr...
We stepped off the large tour boat with a look of fright in both our eyes. Some joy was there, but knowing what went on in this place made us feel the way we did. To me, Alcatraz didn't really look like a shut down prison at that moment. It looked more like an old worn down cemetery. The paint on most of the buildings was chipped off all the way down to the wood. Most of the buildings had collapsed down to some cement foundations and old rusted poles hanging every other way. As we walked to the building where you start your tour, that was probably the only building at this place with cleanliness to it. They gave us our tour headphones, which take you through the whole prison with a audio guide telling you how it was in the prison. Not just how it was for the prisoners, but how it was for the guards too.
