When her outward attempts fail, the grandmother turns inward to her knowledge of Christ in a last ditch effort to save her life. Suddenly, the grandmother and The Misfit move into an intellectual conversation about Christ. At its climax, The Misfit becomes emotional, “‘Listen lady,’ he said in a high voice, ‘if I had of been there I would of know’…his voice seemed about to crack” (21). Their discussion stops at this point, and finally reaches the core of O’Connor’s moral code. Merely knowing about Christ does not equate with salvation; it requires a true connection to God. In this moment, everything has been stripped away from the grandmother’s life, and she is able, for the first time, to find her relationship with God. “The grandmother’s
head cleared for an instant. She saw the man’s face twisted close to her own as if he were going to cry and she murmured, ‘Why you’re one of my babies. You’re one of my own children!’ She reached out and touched him on the shoulder” (21). In epiphany, the grandmother realizes the equality of mankind through God’s eyes. Like Christ, she sees The Misfit without regard for his actions or breeding, merely seeing him as a child of God. Up to this point, the grandmother has been living according to the Misfit’s compass, living life “the best way you can” (21). Intense violence is what finally removes the grandmother from her world of self-absorption. Now, after finding her salvation, she shows the Misfit, a man who has murdered her entire family, sympathy, love and grace. This specific ability, to love one’s enemy, is one of the proofs that she has been enlightened by the grace of God.
A deeply pious man, John considers the Bible a sublime source of moral code, guiding him through the challenges of his life. He proclaims to his kid son, for whom he has written this spiritual memoir, that the “Body of Christ, broken for you. Blood of Christ, shed for you” (81). While John manages to stay strong in the faith and nurture a healthy relationship with his son, his relationship with his own father did not follow the same blueprint. John’s father, also named John Ames, was a preacher and had a powerful effect on John’s upbringing. When John was a child, Father was a man of faith. He executed his role of spiritual advisor and father to John for most of his upbringing, but a shift in perspective disrupted that short-lived harmony. Father was always a man who longed for equanimity and peace. This longing was displayed in his dealings with his other son, Edward: the Prodigal son of their family unit, a man who fell away from faith while at school in Germany. John always felt that he “was the good son, so to speak, the one who never left his father's house” (238). Father always watched over John, examining for any sign of heterodoxy. He argued with John as if John were Edward, as if he were trying to get Edward back into the community. Eventually, John’s father's faith begins to falter. He reads the scholarly books

There are three phases of thought for the Grandmother. During the first phase, which is in the beginning, she is completely focused on herself in relation to how others think of her. The Second Phase occurs when she is speaking to The Misfit. In the story, The Misfit represents a quasi-final judgment. He does this by acting like a mirror. He lets whatever The Grandmother says bounce right off him. He never really agrees with her or disagrees, and in the end he is the one who kills her. His second to last line, "She would of been a good woman," The Misfit said, "if it had been somebody there to shoot her every minute of her life," (O'Conner 152). might be the way O'Conner felt about most of us alive, or how she felt that God must feel about us.
In “Good Country People,” O’Connor effectively symbolizes Christian hypocrisy in her narrative. The same man who is selling bibles is the one who carries “a pocket flask of whisky and a pack of cards” (“Good Country People,” 289), in his hollowed-out bible. A bible salesman using a hollowed-out bible as storage for whisky represents those who use religion to cover up for their sins and achieve society’s approval. Additionally, in Revelation, a person’s name symbolizes the sole theme of the narrative. While Mrs. Turnip is busy denouncing other people’s appearances in the waiting room, a girl named Mary Grace exposes Mrs. Turnip for who she really is, and tells her to “go back to hell, where [she comes] from, [and calls Mrs. Turnip an] old wart hog” (“Revelation”, 21). Although Mrs. Turnip believes she is a noble person, Mary Grace symbolizes the need for grace in Mrs. Turnip’s life for her to become aware of the ugliness that lies beneath her beautiful face, and clean skin. Furthermore, symbolism is a significant element in “A Good Man Is Hard to Find.” The Misfit arrives in “a big black bettered hearse-like automobile” (“AMIHTF,” 6). The car designed to carry coffins, indicates and symbolizes the family’s death, and all the others that the Misfit
Flannery O’Connor believed in the power of religion to give new purpose to life. She saw the fall of the old world, felt the force and presence of God, and her allegorical fictions often portray characters who discover themselves transforming to the Catholic mind. Though her literature does not preach, she uses subtle, thematic undertones and it is apparent that as her characters struggle through violence and pain, divine grace is thrown at them. In her story “Revelation,” the protagonist, Mrs. Turpin, acts sanctimoniously, but ironically the virtue that gives her eminence is what brings about her downfall. Mrs. Turpin’s veneer of so called good behavior fails to fill the void that would bring her to heaven. Grace hits her with force and their illusions, causing a traumatic collapse exposing the emptiness of her philosophy. As Flannery O’Connor said, “In Good Fiction, certain of the details will tend to accumulate meaning from the action of the story itself, and when this happens they become symbolic in the way they work.” (487). The significance is not in the plot or the actual events, but rather the meaning is between the lines.
In this analysis, we will be looking at just how Flannery O'Connor accomplished this seemingly impossible task, non-didactic Christian fiction, by examining elements of faith, elements of style, and thematic elements in her writing. While secondary sources are included for perspective, I have focused primarily upon Miss O'Connor's own essays and speeches in my examination of the writer's motivations, attitudes, and technique, most of which are contained in the posthumous collection Mystery and Manners. Unlike some more cryptic writers, O'Connor was happy to discuss the conceptual and philosophical underpinnings of her stories, and this candor is a godsend for the researcher that seeks to know what "makes the writer tick."

At times he is gentle, at times harsh. Some of his statements and actions show him to be wise, and some show him to be clueless and out of touch with reality. He is at times moral, and at other times completely amoral. His character is a combination of opposites. The Misfit first appears a little more than halfway through the story. His actions and words show him to be both gentle and harsh. He is gentle with the grandmother, saying “Lady, don’t you get upset” (147) when her son curses
The story examines fate and code of conduct of the Misfit and the grandmother. The story is thought provoking, disturbing and challenges one's perspective of what one may consider right or wrong. There is also a degree of selfishness behaviors that raises questions about the characters ability to show empathy freely despite their disposition. The Misfit affirmed his code of conduct by an injustice, he is not able to recall the crime and there is no paperwork to substantiate the crime. He said, "I call myself The Misfit, because I can't make what all I done wrong fit what all I gone through in punishment" (O'Connor, 1953). Therefore, his moral code is not about what is right or wrong, but what he perceived as gratifying. The question is, whether

When life turns into a living nightmare, a child may not know what is real nor what is fake, life may become confusing. In the excerpt A Death in the Family by James Agee, this is the unfortunate sequence of events. A Death in the Family follows the events and internal conflicts that are happening inside the 6 year old, Rufus when he finds out of the unfortunate and untimely death of his father. Rufus cannot believe that “My daddy is dead.” (Jewkes 88) and is seen in denial throughout; but the child is only thinking about his own feelings, and does not know how to cope. Flannery O 'Connor utilizes multiple biblical references, such as Jesus raising the dead, to create a foundation for what the Grandmother and Misfit believe in terms of morality. The Grandmother references Christianity in a positive and redeeming sense while the Misfit claims that “Jesus was the only One that ever raised the dead, and He shouldn 't have done it. He shown everything off balance” (O’Connor 151). Her reality before the incident was the people such as the Misfit were evil, while those similar to her who grew up in the classic traditions of the south were better off. Although she was raised in a highly religious and proper setting, she does not realize the fault in her logic until she is staring down the barrel of a gun. The grandmother attempts to use this religion to save her life by telling the Misfit about prayer and salvation. By asking the Misfit "Do you ever pray?" and then repeatedly saying “pray, pray, pray”, she is attempting to show him the fact that he does not have to do evil acts because of his past (O’Connor 149). Carey’s only spiritual bondage comes from perhaps the biggest and most widely known religion of all time: Christianity. After his mother’s death, Philip is put into the care of his uncle, a strict-orthodox Christian vicar. Not knowing much about Christianity, Philip is harshly taught by his uncle a somewhat hypocritical view of Christianity, in that even though Christians are taught to love one another, the Vicar negatively gossips about most of the people in the town. Philip’s first test of his faith occurs when he thinks up the notion to pray for the healing of his club foot. He makes a logical commandment within himself that, “If God had not cured him, it was because he did not really believe” (Maugham 55). When he wakes up on the day he believes it to be healed, he finds that it is not. He then comes to the realization that, “I suppose no one ever has faith enough” (Maugham 55). It is here that Carey first experiences his spiritual bond being broken: he believes, he prays; but he is not healed.
