Every day is a fashion show and the world is your runway”

World War II changed fashion enormously by rationing clothes, this made it that after WW2 had ended, and the fashion of the war had lingered into some of the most popular trends in the 1950s. Fashion was a relief from worries and way to express themselves. So designers like Christian Dior wanted to start a new fresh look for women to kind of celebrate the war ending. The effects of war had made women crave glamour and beauty which changed how people wore clothes on a daily basis and had made 1950’s the Golden Age of Couture. World War 2 was the biggest war in history! And it sure did affect fashion in a huge way. During WW2 there were some laws like L-85 that rationed clothing. This had made the consumer society which had made the fashion industry boom. The consumer society became bigger when manufactures had figured out a way to make it that the middle class could afford good clothes.
History
L-85 came into affect in 1941.The government had given each person a Clothing Book with coupons in them. Every item of clothing was given a value in coupons. To buy clothes they would give the shopkeeper their book and the shopkeepers were the only ones allowed to cut the coupons out. They would then pay for their clothes. One of the rules were that they were only allowed to use one type of colored coupon until the government announced the next color. But they were only allowed to use 60 coupons the whole year. And because children grow the government would give each child ten extra coupons .The United States emerged from World War II as the most powerful country in...

Throughout the world of men’s fashion in the 50’s, a few men rose above social normalities and created a style everyone man wanted to follow. One of these men was Elvis Presley who was highly regarded in the music industry for his unique style. This originality carried through to his fashion choices with an obvious distaste of adhering to social standards. Elvis wore whatever pleased him; this included bright colours, patterns, large belts and even wearing his favourite colour of pink. Another key icon in men’s fashion was James dean. His simplistic yet edgy style became the ‘cool’ thing. His bad boy persona made the girls heart melt, making men all across the world try to achieve his look.
New fashions were surfacing in both men’s and women’s fashions. Men were wearing Bermuda pants, baggy pants that were cut off at the knee, while women were wearing capris, tight pants that cut off just below the knee. Men were wearing tailored jackets and making a slight move towards the casual dress of today’s workplace. Women were wearing natural shoulders as opposed to the heavily padded ones of the war years. Flat, neck-hugging collars replaced the mannish collars of the late 1940’s. Waists were tightly fitted and skirts were long (Melinkoff 46). The jeans of the time were often lined with plaid flanel and dungarees were worn to the most casual occasions. The sandals of the fifties were not much different than the sandals of today.
If we didn’t have fashion then a lot of people wouldn’t have jobs because there are a whole bunch of fashion designers out there, also all of the celebrities wouldn’t have name brand clothing because there would be no way to make them because we wouldn’t have designers. Fashion of the 1920’s played a very big role in today’s fashion. Including the material our clothing is made out of also the styles of clothing we wear. Many things women wear today first came from fashion in the 1920's. Flappers, shoe styles, and accessories are a few things that we wear today have came from. Many celebrities still wear some things that people wore in the 1920's including flappers. Have you ever wondered what the amazing fashion of the 1920's was like?

The Chronicle of Western Fashion: From Ancient times to the Present Day.
The sixties were a time of growing youth culture and youth fashions, which had already begun in the late fifties. In the west, young people were benefiting from the postwar industrial boom, and had no problem finding work. With extra cash in their pockets, they were able to spend more and had begun to refashion themselves accordingly. This higher demand in the fashion business brought out a new generation of designers. The freedom of extra cash meant room for more imagination and creativity, bringing out new and provocative fashion ideas.
Coco Chanel, born Gabrielle Bonhuer Chanel, on August 19, 1883 in Saumur, France was an amazing woman who redefined fashion as we know it today. She was a clothing designer who revolutionized the fashion industry with her suits, little black dresses, and avant garde flare. Because of this quickly in her young life she became well know, and rose to be the fashion icon that she is today. From the timeless designs that are still popular to this day, and the sophisticated outfits that can be paired with great accessories Chanel has done it all. When it comes down to it though it was Coco Chanel’s philosophy that “luxury must be comfortable, otherwise it’s not luxury” that lead to her success. (“Coco Chanel”)

In the past, the purpose of clothing was solely to accentuate certain aspects of a body or to show wealth and power. The 1940s showed a time of class - men wore suits for their office jobs and women wore long dresses and big hats. During this time, women began to play with more expressive coloring while still remaining modest. Hair was either full of volume or styled very close to the face. In the 1950s, men wore leather jackets and women mostly donned poodle skirts or thin pencil skirts. The 1960s and ‘70s began the mismatched “hippie” era - flower print, tie dye, mini skirts with oversized sweaters, and fringes. Finally, the ‘80s brought looks very familiar to many teenagers today. Many wore jelly shoes, neon clothing, chokers, and high waisted jeans. Many of these clothing styles were popularized from music styles, world messages and crises, and role models in pop culture. Today, fashion comes, goes and repeats a few decades later. In the average teenager’s lifetime, big hair from the ‘40s, leather jackets from the ‘50s, fringes and tassels from the ‘60s, tie dye from the ‘70s, and jelly shoes from the ‘80s have been ever-present. If style had never shifted so drastically, they would have never been so closely followed by today’s younger generations, and the style could have been lost forever. As the years pass, people find inspiration from previous popular styles and merge them into what is popular today to make it their own. Clothing and style is an endless cycle of changing and morphing, but remembering the origin and reasoning behind the styles in the first
Coco Chanel, a famous fashion designer of the 1920’s, once said, “Fashion fades, only style remains the same” (Chanel 1). The Roaring Twenties identified as a time for freedom to express one’s self after World War One ended in 1918. Following the war, The “Flaming Youth” felt they should live their lives now since the future is never promised. Women celebrated their right to vote in 1920, and all the social changes of the twenties effected fashion in the world. Fashion comes from the way society is, and what events surround it. Since the Roaring Twenties fashion era remains in modern day society because of the huge shift from the previous, modest era, many similarities, as well as differences, can be gathered from these two vibrant styles (Boland 1).
‘Fashion Hits’, is a magazine article for females (14-30) on the history of fashion and how it can be styled in modern society. The description of the clothes is highly important, the overall look stated in the article, shows it is clear that the target audience is young females interested in fashion and celebrity lifestyle. My primary objective was to entertain the reader, but to inform the reader of how fashion trends have developed to fit the modern world.
1960s was significant decade for the fashion world in UK. Moreover it also was a remarkable changed with dressing styles under the circle of mini to maxi.
Fashion takes on many different facets and concerns many subsets— a model sashaying down the runway in a gown encrusted in real gems, Lady Gaga’s infamous dress made of cuts of raw beef, a teenage girl obsessing over the season’s latest styles— it is all an expression of our minds and who we are or want to be, made tangible. It is a medium just like any other, for while artists wield brushes and paints, designers use thread and cloth to illustrate their vision. The artistry is none more so apparent than in the exclusive world of haute couture, a world of extravagance that caters to aesthetics, producing one-of-a-kind wearable masterpieces that are made to be admired rather than worn. It is without doubt, high fashion and its design is an art.
