Etgar Keret’s short story “What if This Goldfish, Would You Wish” and W.W. Jacobs’s short story “The Monkey’s Paw” shares a similar theme of be careful what you wish for. In both stories the characters are given three wishes to use. In “What if This Goldfish, Would You Wish” Sergei does not want to use his last wish. Sergei wants to use it for a better cause like he did with his first two wishes. In the text it states “No,” Sergei says. He’s shaking his head from side to side. “I can’t,” he says. “I’ve been saving it. Saving it for something.” “For what?” the fish says. But Sergei won’t answer.”, and “You killed him, Sergei,” the goldfish says. “You murdered someone—but you’re not a murderer.” The goldfish stops swishing his tail. “If, on …show more content…
In the Story after supper the sergeant-major leaves. Herbert says he thinks the sergeant-major is full of nonsense and jokes that his father should make himself an emperor so that he doesn’t have to listen to Mrs. White’s nagging. In mock anger, Mrs. White playfully chases her son. Later that day someone for Herbert comes to the door and tells his family that he is dead and that Maw and Meggins will give the Whites two hundred pounds. Mrs. White shrieks, and Mr. White faints. The Whites jokes around about their wish and something bad happened for them to get what they wished for.
Both stories have many characters that are hard to figure out. In “What if This Goldfish, Would You Wish” Sergei was thoughtful and considerate. The author uses indirect characterization to show the reader this. Sergei was considerate because he didn't want to use his last wish on Yoni but to use it for the fish, not to lose the companionship with the fish. In the story Sergei hits Yoni in his head to protect his magical fish because he didn't want to lose him. I know this because in the text it states, “Sergei doesn’t like this, doesn’t like that the boy is almost at it, already reaching for the jar. In this instant Sergei understands the boy didn’t come for
Both authors use figurative language to help develop sensory details. In the poem It states, “And I sunned it with my smiles, And with soft deceitful wiles.” As the author explains how the character is feeling, the reader can create a specific image in there head based on the details that is given throughout the poem. Specifically this piece of evidence shows the narrator growing more angry and having more rage. In the short story ” it states, “We are below the river's bed. The drops of moisture trickle among bones.” From this piece of text evidence the reader can sense the cold dark emotion that is trying to be formed. Also this excerpt shows the conflict that is about to become and the revenge that is about to take place. By the story and the poem using sensory details, they both share many comparisons.
In the book, The Pearl, by John Steinbeck, and the short story “The Monkey's Paw” by W.W. Jacobs, both authors would agree that in these stories, if you intervene with your destiny/fate, a bad outcome is sure to happen. In The Pearl, Kino finds the pearl of the world. Kino wants to sell the pearl, in return for money, but the pearl ends up bringing the opposite of prosperity and brings bad fortune. Also, In “The Monkey's Paw”, Mr.White also wishes for money, but as he is warned, terrible things come when u interrupt with your fate.
...hat the abbey could make money for use for the abbey, the abbot, the land, and for the king. The abbots response was to threaten Herbert and force him to destroy the mill that he had built.
Throughout T. C. Boyle’s work, “Greasy Lake”, a young man’s intrepid night leads him to discover how close death is to life. This realization causes a sombre awakening for the narrator as he falls in the midst of fatality; and practically becomes a casualty himself. Following each traumatic event, the narrator’s innocence disappears and morality is called into question. When death fast approaches, and the grim reaper is breathing down his neck, the narrator subsequently realizes his mistakes, but not before it’s almost too late.
To the white men’s surprise, when they arrive at Mathu’s house, they are out numbered at least two to one. The white men realize that they are going to lose once again. When the white men start to shoot, this shows how childish people are when they are not on top of the world. The white men all died and lay dead in the street when the sheriff arrived the next morning.
“Herbert already had what he wanted. He had had it long before the inheritance or I intruded. He had the respectability his mother had hammered into him. But just as priceless as that was an income not quite big enough to go around. It left him no alternative but… to play piano in a dive, and breathe smoke, and drink gin, to be
Prior to the play, Boy Willie had not seen his sister in three years. During those three years he was incarcerated and was sentenced to labor at the Parchman Prison Farm. He is considered to be the most impulsive and prideful character in the play. Boy Willie believes he is of equal standing to the white man despite his racial background. He wants to sell the piano in order to “avenge” his father’s namesake while at the same time leaving his mark in the world despite his sister’s opposition in order to create his own legacy. He doesn’t believe the battle between black and white exists and that it‘s nothing more than a memory. However, he lives in his own world and ignores the reality. Failing to succeed is his fear. He doesn’t want to believe that he is below in standing than a white man. He wants to be able to leave his legacy in the world as he believes is his right.
When the great holiday of Thanksgiving comes to mind, most people think of becoming total gluttons and gorging themselves with a seemingly unending amount of food. Others might think of the time spent with family and friends. The whole basis of the holiday is family togetherness, fellowship, and thankfulness for blessings received during the previous year.
In both stories each main character is granted three wishes, but later pays a price. Mr. White’s first wish is for two hundred pounds so he can pay off the mortgage. However, he receives the two hundred pounds as c...
In today’s society, there is nothing that is seen as a perfect marriage. Love and hate are both closely intertwined in our brain, making them the two most intense emotions. It is bazar to think that one can go from loving someone to hating (disliking) that certain individual, or from hating (disliking) that individual to falling mad in love with them. Society creates a barrier that makes one believe on what a loving relationship should be. In many occasions negativity and other factors come to play in a loving relationship. Even though love can over power hate, hate and other negatives can come out at the starting point of love because of infidelity, resentment, and other disappointments in a relationship.

In Etgar Kerets short story "What, of, This Goldfish, would you wish?", there are two main characters, Sergei and Yonatan. At the beginning of the story, the author begins to show Sergei is an egocentric person. But, as the story progresses, he becomes a warm-hearted character. On page 7, it explains that he did not want to use his last wish on Yonatan, because Sergei had used his two other wishes on his sister, who had cancer, and Sergei also used his other wish on his girlfriend at the time son. On page 8, Sergei seems obsurd because he thinks he can cover up the murder of Yonatan by mopping up the blood in his kitchen, and Sergei was going to drag Yonatan out of his house at midnight, and put him at the end of his fishing poll. Then, as
he gibes them 200 pounds. The consequence of Mr. Whites first wish is the main

Hundreds of years ago, people migrated to the United States from many European countries. As time passed, America received even more immigrants from many different cultural backgrounds. Unlike some other countries, if you walk around in the United States, you will see people of all different cultures. This is the reason our country is described as a, “melting pot.” Though everyone that lives or has lived in America is considered an American, some of their ancestors that did not migrate to America, were not. So, the culture of these ancestors travel through generations, & give later family members a share of their decadence. When a couple has a child, their children have a mix of both parent’s blood, giving them multiple ancestors of different cultural decadence. The passing of cultures is why I’m able to say that I’m not only American, but I am also English, French, & German. Though many people who have different backgrounds do not practice the customs of the
