Oprah Winfrey is a name that needs no introduction to most people in the world. Starting her journey with nothing, today , she has everything anybody could wish for and more. She has the money, the friends, the fame, the respect and as she repeatedly has pointed out as a comical comment, the shoes.
“I vividly remember my grandmother steaming clothes from the pot to hang on the line to dry, she called to me, ‘Oprah Gail, you better watch me now, cause one day you got to know how to do this for yourself.’” Still, small voice inside me, really more a feeling than a voice, said, ‘This will not be your life. Your life will be more than hanging clothes on a line’”(Daily Mail). Oprah Winfrey, an African-American female known for empowering women and being the first black female billionaire has overcome so many difficult challenges and abuse. Even though she's been through these challenges, she continues to persevere. This perseverance helped her to grow to become one of the most famous icon for women around the world.
Oprah Gail Winfrey was born on January 29, 1954 in Kosciusko, Mississippi living with a poor Baptist family (Wikipedia). Her parents, Vernon Winfrey and Vernita Lee were unmarried and still teenagers during the time she was born (Wikipedia). She lived with her grandmother where she would learn how to read aloud and recite sermons by the young age of 3 (America's Beloved Best Friend). At the age of 13 she would move to Milwaukee with her mother and that's when the trouble would start (America's Beloved Best Friend). She would face sexual abuse and molestation from her family relatives as a teenager, by her cousin, family friends, and her uncle (Victoria Walker). Oprah would keep this a secret and would bottle up her anger, which lead to trouble (Victoria Walker). She would repeatedly run away from home and was sent to juvenile detention, but her admission would be denied because the detention's overcrowded area (America's Beloved Best Friend). At the age of 14 she was impregnated by one of her abusers, but the baby would become stillborn, and this would devastate Oprah (Victoria Walker). Her mother would send her to live with her father as a last resort. She vowed to change her life (Victoria Walker).
Winfrey’s early life was filled with arduous hurdles from the beginning, she was raised in a small podunk town in Mississippi that was anything but safe for a young girl, but on top of that she was raised by a single mother who was not around nearly enough. However the most formidable part of her upbringing was, she was sexually abused by ‘family friends’ and relatives on multiple occasions starting from the age of just nine. At twelve she was sent away to middle Tennessee to live with her father, there she realised her passion, she began giving speeches in front of her church and ultimately came to the conclusion that she wanted to speak for a living. Without her parents divorce Winfrey might have never figured out her passion of speaking to people until it was too late, this was a hidden advantage in the making of her success. However all too soon she had to leave the comfort of her father’s home where she could pursue her interest and journey back to her mother, where she was sadly yet again

This week a researched a paper based on a famous historical figure, Oprah Gail Winfrey was born on January 29, 1954. The reason why I choose this person on a famous Historical figure, Because she is a talk show host, Producer, actress, an American media proprietor and philanthropist. Who could have imagined that a girl born in poverty and having had her tender childhood years torn apart from multiple sexual abuse, would have created an award winning, high-rated talk show and owned her own television network? Oprah is the wealthiest African-American woman who never forgets people’s angst, and has the power to change generations. Her success came at an early age, after being fired from a co- anchor job in Baltimore, Maryland, where she hosted a TV chat show called “People Are Talking”. The show became a hit and Winfrey continued with it for eight years, but then was recruited by a Chicago TV station to host her own morning show, “A.M. Chicago”. The.
Oprah Winfrey grew up in abuse and poverty, but that did not stop her in being the women she is today. Oprah is one of the richest women on Earth, but not without her struggles. On top of that, Oprah is a capitalist pragmatist (Lofton, 2006). Oprah believes in a spiritual path, but one that does not concern religion (Lofton, 2006). Her religion is more about perfecting herself and trying to be the perfect human being (Lofton, 2006). Her family and past, her career, the nature of how she sees God, and the influence she has on people all influence Oprah and her worldview.
For her generous donations and admirable charity donations, Winfrey has earned numerous awards and recognitions. Amongst those include the Jean Hersholt Humanitarian Award and the Presidential Medal for Freedom which is the country’s highest civilian honour. Oprah Winfrey’s journey starts from being in the lows and not bright yet with her dedication, hard work and perseverance she has been able to overcome all the obstacles in her way and to achieve the success she has today. Winfrey is the ideal global citizen and her contributions and selfless acts will surely engrave her name in history as one of the major inspirational philanthropists of time.
